Gerstacker wrote this story in 1862. It is considerably darker than the musical and has a bittersweet, downbeat ending (the couple are not reunited at the end).

In addition to her groundbreaking work in "Oklahoma!", de Mille also choreographed "Carousel", "Bloomer Girl", and "One Touch of Venus". Much of the choreography in "Brigadoon" was cooked up between de Mille and director Robert Lewis to replace what they felt were long stretches of excessively saccharine dialogue.
