Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lenin's ideology was _____?

Answer: Marxist

Russia was a very backward country at the begninning of the 20th century and Lenin believed that Marxism offered the best solution to the country's problems.
2. When did Lenin publish his controversial leaflet "What is to be done?"?

Answer: 1902

It was first presented at a conference in London where the Social Democrats (SDs) had their meetings.
3. What did the pamphlet "What is to be done?" result in?

Answer: Split of Mensheviks and Bolsheviks

A few of the Social Democrats disagreed with Lenin's proposed amendments to Marxist theory. Marxism held that history is a science, subject to laws and therefore to determinism (or inevitability). Marx had said that feudalism was followed by capitalism, which in turn would be superseded by socialism. However, Lenin wanted to bypass capitalism.
4. Was Lenin in Russia during the 1905 revolution?

Answer: No

Lenin observed the 1905 revolution from Germany as he was in political exile. He saw the uprising as a dress rehearsal for the revolution of 1917. It also highlighted the potential of the peasants as a revolutionary force, whereas Marx had always believed that the driving force behind any socialist revolution would be the industrial working class: indeed, Marx took a dim view of peasants and wrote scornfully of 'the idiocy of rural life'.
5. When did Lenin return to Russia?

Answer: April 1917

Lenin returned to Russia from Swtizerland back after Tsardom had collapsed and political prisoners were allowed back into the country. The German government allowed him to travel across Germany in a sealed train: they hoped to foment unrest in Russia.
6. Who became Lenin's 'right hand man' in 1917-18?

Answer: Trotsky

Trotsky - originally a Menshevik - aided Lenin in the October Revolution and went on to create the Red Army. He was a very clever guy, although also ruthless. Kaminev and Zinoviev had initially opposed the October Revolution even though they were Bolsheviks. Stalin was never a favorite of Lenin's.
7. When was the second revolution of 1917, which Lenin led, according to the Julian calendar?

Answer: October 1917

Tsardom fell in February 1917 and in October 1917 the Bolsheviks seized power. (They called it a revolution, but it was more of a coup d'état). Note. In the Gregorian (Western) Calendar the months are March and November.
8. What name was adopted for Lenin's version of Marxist theory?

Answer: Marxism-Leninism

Marxism-Leninism, that is Marxism amended by Lenin, became the official version of Marxist theory in Communist countries in Europe.
9. Did the Bolsheviks claim a high number of seats in the constitutional assembly in 1918?

Answer: No

After the election Lenin dissolved the constitutional assembly as he wanted the Bolsheviks to have complete control. This triggered civil war in 1918.
10. When did Lenin die?

Answer: 1924

There were several attempts on his life, one resulting in a bullet getting lodged in his neck in 1921. His health grew progressively worse and he was unable to talk at the time of his death.
