Musicals Mixture Trivia Questions

1. Pre-dating a recent TV show of the same name by several decades, the musical "A Girl Called Jo", was based on which piece of literature?

From Quiz
The Musicals We Left Behind

Answer: Little Women

With songs which include "When They Play the Polka", "Bread and Cheese and Kisses" and "The Wonder of Spring", this musical covers a period of twelve months starting Christmas Eve 1863. As a musical it opened in the West End of London in late 1955 closing the following spring after 141 performances. I can find no record of it being revived since then. That is not to say it has not been performed by amateur societies around the world, but neither have I found any evidence that it has.

2. Racking up 7,485 performances on Broadway between October 1982 and its 'last night' on September 10, 2000, which Andrew Lloyd Webber musical is one of the longest-running stage musicals of all time?

From Quiz Last Night on Broadway

Answer: Cats

'Cats' was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with lyrics largely based on T.S. Eliot's 'Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats'. The exception is the famous song 'Memory' in which the ageing cat Grizabella sings a lament to the fact that she is approaching the end of her life - "I remember the time I knew what happiness was" - and ponders what a new day (and the next life) might bring for her. That song was written by the theatre director Trevor Nunn using a couple of T.S. Eliot's other poems as inspiration. The show had its premiere in London's West End in May 1981 and transferred to Broadway's Winter Garden Theater the following year. A relatively short-lived revival production was also available to Broadway theatregoers from July 2016 to December 2017.

3. Jewish family endeavor to stay alive Is from which drama?

From Quiz Musicals in Haiku

Answer: Fiddler on the Roof

"Fiddler on the Roof" is a depiction of Tevye and Golde, a Jewish couple with five daughters, living in Anatevka. Living in the small Russian town, the story starts by describing how "Tradition" helps them live while the world around them changes.

4. "The Canaan Daily": "Ex-slave becomes Pharaoh's right-hand man following accurate dream interpretations".

From Quiz Headlining Stage Musicals

Answer: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

Written by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics from Tim Rice, "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" is a tongue-in-cheek retelling of the story of Joseph from the biblical book of "Genesis", focusing on Joseph's rise to fame following his dream interpretations for Egypt's pharaoh. The show is completely sung-through and doesn't feature any other dialogue.

5. In 1956, 'Irma la Douce' premiered, with its closing number 'Christmas Child' performed by the company. In what city was it first performed professionally?

From Quiz A Musical Christmas

Answer: Paris

'Irma la Douce' was originally in French, with music by Marguerite Monnot, and lyrics and script by Alexandre Breffort. The English version (lyrics and script by Julian More, David Heneker and Monty Norman) premiered in the West End in 1958. David Merrick produced the first American version in 1960. The 1963 movie with the same title, starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine, eliminated the musical aspects of the show. The musical tells the story of a poor law student, in love with a successful prostitute, who takes on the persona of a rich older man. When he "kills" this second identity, he is convicted of murder. Eventually he is able to establish his innocence, since there was no murder, and he and Irma are reunited.

6. Do you know which musical tells of the "The Circle of Life", portraying Simba's life as he grows from cub to king?

From Quiz Musicals for the Young and Young at Heart

Answer: The Lion King

This musical show was inspired from the Disney animated film released in 1994. The first time it appeared on stage was 1997 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The show is famous for the pageantry, costumes and music. The story tells the tale of Simba and how he learns to become the king.

7. What was the name of the 1970 musical for which Richard Rodgers provided the music?

From Quiz Musicals Hodgepodge

Answer: Two By Two

The musical telling of Noah and his ark starred Danny Kaye. Although it was not originally well-received, it has since found affection from audiences around the world in local productions and revivals.

8. The hit movie "Newsies" was adapted into a Broadway musical of the same name. In the musical adaptation, the movie characters Sarah Jacobs and Brian Denton were combined into one character. What is that character's name?

From Quiz How Well Do You Know Modern Broadway Musicals 2?

Answer: Kathrine Plumber

Kathrine Plumber is the combination of Sarah Jacobs and Brian Denton. Like Sarah Jacobs she is Jack's love interest, but she is a reporter just like Brian Denton. Kara Lindsay originated this role on Broadway.

9. In the musical "Wicked", what is the name of the Wizard's main flying monkey?

From Quiz How Well Do You Know Modern Broadway Musicals?

Answer: Chistery

Elphaba first meets Chistery when the Wizard invites her to the Emerald City. Later, Elphaba takes pity on Chistery and tries to save him.

10. "Mr. Cellophane" is a memorable song from which Kander and Ebb musical?

From Quiz Musical Mania

Answer: Chicago

The stage musical "Chicago" was developed from a book written by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse. Fosse was also the choreographer for the show.
