Mixed New York Trivia Questions

1. The Dutch established New York City under what name?

From Quiz
I Feel Like Taking a Bite of the Big Apple

Answer: New Amsterdam

The city was called New Amsterdam until 1664. The Dutch surrendered the city to the British in that year. Some areas of NYC still have Dutch names, including Harlem (named after Haarlem), Stuyvesant (Dutch governor of the colony), and Bleecker Street (named after the Bleecker family, prominent in banking).

2. New York City is comprised of areas known as boroughs. How many are there?

From Quiz A New York State of Mind

Answer: five

The five boroughs of New York City are: Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island. Of the five, Queens is the largest in area at 108.53 square miles, with Brooklyn second at 70.82. However, Brooklyn is the most populous as of the 2017 census.

3. What National Football League franchise has always called Buffalo, New York home?

From Quiz Do Buffalos Really Have Wings?

Answer: The Buffalo Bills

In the 1990s, the Bills made it to (but lost) four Superbowls...but there's always next year (and the next)! The Bulls play college football for the University at Buffalo; the Buffalo Bandits play indoor lacrosse; the Buffalo Bisons are the farm team for the Mets (baseball). Buffalo, New York is a town for serious sports fans! It's a toss-up whether locals are more passionate about the Bills or the Sabers (ice hockey).

4. Vermont, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Indiana, California, and Texas all have an Orange County. But New York's is the original. What year was it established?

From Quiz The Original Orange County

Answer: 1683

6. This store has elaborately decorated holiday windows. They also sponsor the Thanksgiving Day Parade.

From Quiz Christmas in New York City

Answer: Macy's

The Macy's windows are always spectacular, so are the windows at Saks and Lord and Taylor, but only Macy's sponsors the parade.

7. One of New York City's most famous landmarks is the Statue of Liberty. On which island is the statue? (don't overthink it)

From Quiz I Feel Like Taking a Bite of the Big Apple

Answer: Liberty Island

Common belief is that the statue was a gift from France. That is partially true. The US had a hand in its creation, which was meant to commemorate the friendship between the two nations. The shell of the statue is copper (copper has a green color when it starts corroding) and the internal structure is steel. The outer design was created by Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi and the structure was designed by Alexandre-Gustav Eiffel (yes, the Eiffel tower guy). The statue was dedicated in 1886 and stands on Liberty Island. Millions of immigrants passed the statue on their way to Ellis Island - where most of the immigrants were processed as they entered the US. For many, it was (and remains) a symbol of freedom and the promise of a better life.

8. What natural wonder of the world is located just twelve miles away from Buffalo?

In 1969, the "Miracle Mets" won the World Series, beating the heavily-favored Baltimore Orioles.

13. In what part of New York is the legendary Apollo Theater located?

From Quiz A New York State of Mind

Answer: Harlem

Originally inhabited by mostly Jewish and Italian immigrants and their descendants, the growing number of African-Americans migrating from the segregated South caused that population to become dominant in Harlem over time. Ironically the Apollo Theater was originally a burlesque house with a "Whites Only" admission policy. When the theater was purchased in 1933 by Sidney Cohen after being closed for a few years he renovated the building and re-opened it under the name "Apollo Theater".

From Quiz I Feel Like Taking a Bite of the Big Apple

Answer: 1 World Trade Center (Freedom Tower)

Despite being the tallest building in New York City (and in the US), 1 World Trade Center doesn't have its own ZIP code. Because there are so many potential mail recipients in the other three buildings, it's actually more efficient for them to have their own ZIP code.

From Quiz A New York State of Mind

Answer: The imposition of a military draft

From July 13th to July 16th Lower Manhattan in New York City was embroiled in violent riots protesting laws initiated by Congress authorizing the drafting of men into service to fight in the American Civil War. The riots soon escalated beyond protesting the draft and into ugly and violent racial and political battles. Competition for jobs between recently freed blacks and white immigrants added fuel to the situation. There was not a sufficient number of police to handle the riots so President Lincoln ordered militia to the city.

19. Just about everyone knows Buffalo Wings, but what other gustatory delight is a local favorite in Buffalo?

From Quiz Do Buffalos Really Have Wings?

Answer: Beef on Weck

Beef on Weck is a roast beef sandwich on a kummelweck roll--carraway seeds and kosher salt distinguish this roll from a kaiser. The sandwich is usually served with horseradish and it's Western New York's other signature dish. Shoo-fly pie is a Pennsylvania specialty and is delightfully sweet. The muskellunge is a fish that is native to the region, but I've never seen a fritter made with it. Tacos with cream corn is a mistake I made once.
