Timbuktu likely had intermittent settlements as much as 3,000 years ago and became permanently settled in the 12th century. As part of the Mali Empire it accrued great wealth and became a center of higher learning in the 13th and 14th centuries. Shifting power structures and changes in trade routes took away some of its wealth and prestige. After a Moroccan invasion in 1591 the city went into serious decline. Even so, it achieved a reputation as a place of riches and mystery. In 1824, the Geographical Society of Paris offered a reward of 7,000 francs and a gold medal worth 2,000 francs to the first European to visit Timbuktu and report back. No one ever collected the reward because the natives had a tendency to kill outsiders. Alfred Tennyson added to its mystique with his 1829 poem "Timbuctoo", comparing it to El Dorado and Atlantis. Over time, though, with trade and resources declining, Timbuktu has become a poverty-stricken place.

Amsterdam is the capital and the largest city of the Netherlands and it is colloquially called the "Venice of the North". The name of the city indicates its origin around a dam in the river Amstel. We spent a few days there to know the city well and to visit some landmarks. In addition to a boat trip through the canals, we visited the Rijksmuseum and the Anne Frank House. The Rijksmuseum museum was founded in The Hague in 1798; in 1808 it was transferred to Amsterdam and it is dedicated to arts and history. Its collection has more than 2,000 paintings from notable Dutch painters. It is the largest museum in the country and receives around 2.2 million visitors a year. Anne Frank House is a biographical museum dedicated to the Jewish wartime diarist Anne Frank. During World War II, Anne Frank hid from the Nazi persecutors with her family and four other people in the hidden rooms at the rear of the 17th-century canal house, known as the Secret Annex. She did not survive the war but her diary was published in 1947. Ten years later the Anne Frank Foundation was established and in 1960 the museum was opened.

On January 13, 2012, the cruise ship "Costa Concordia" heeled over to starboard and partially sank in the Tyrrhenian Sea upon striking an underwater rock and shelf off the western Italian coast near Isola del Giglio. Thirty-two people were killed, and the ship was declared a total loss. An $800-million salvage operation was undertaken to remove the ship. It was righted in September, 2013, in preparation for towing to a yard for disassembly. Named for an Etruscan prince, the Tyrrhenian Sea is part of the larger Mediterranean Sea and extends down the front part of the "leg" of western Italy, from the "thigh" through the instep of the "boot." It is bounded by the Ligurian Sea to the north, the islands of Corsica and Sardinia to the west, and the island of Sicily to the south.

The first gorge carries the whole of the Zambezi into Victoria Falls. From there it progresses into the second gorge and upon entering it, turns sharply to the right before arriving at the Boiling Pot. When the river is at high water the conditions here can be extremely treacherous, characterised by large swirls and some heavy turbulence. The bodies of a Mrs Moss and Mr Orchard were discovered there in 1910 after their canoes had been overturned by a hippopotamus and they were swept over the falls.

Wall Drug was a pharmacy that advertised to traveling cowpokes back in the 19th century that they had free water, which was a commodity in the Old West. It is now primarily a tourist trap on the way to Mount Rushmore if you are heading west.

Christchurch is the largest city on the South Island and the third largest in the whole of New Zealand. Its name, suggested by John Robert Godley who had attended Christ Church, Oxford, was decided on at the first meeting of the Canterbury Association in 1848. It became a city by Royal Charter in July, 1856. The picturesque River Avon runs slowly through the centre of what was a very attractive city. It is one of the four cities in the world that are built with a central square, four surrounding squares and then a parkland buffer around the city. My home town, Adelaide, is one of the others and it a sister city to Christchurch. A severe earthquake in 2010 led to massive destruction of buildings and considerable loss of life. Earthquakes and aftershocks have continued since then. The city is being rebuilt with lower buildings and more open areas.

I can see for miles and I can tell you that this canyon goes on and on for two hundred and twenty-seven miles. The depth averages to around five thousand feet deep! The Pueblo Indians built adobe homes around this great canyon. The Hopi Indians believed that their spirits would come to rest at the Grand Canyon after they died. Some of the rocks here are 250,000 years old. The top layers are made of limestone and are called Kaibab limestone. Other layers are made from coconino sandstone, hermit shale, supai, redwall limestone, brown mauv limestone, green bright angel shale, tapeats limestone, Precambrian schists and gneisses. It's no wonder that the Grand Canyon is so colorful! Hell's Canyon is bordered by eastern Oregon and western Idaho. It is the deepest river gorge in all of North America and is nearly eight thousand feet deep. This canyon was carved by the Snake River. Horseshoe Bend, is a nearly circular shape and is located on the Colorado River. There is a thousand foot drop from the walls of this canyon down to the river below. Bryce Canyon has hundreds of geologic structures called "hoodoos". Some reach as high as two hundred feet. It looks like an amphitheater and is not a canyon at all.

The Salton Sea is located in Southern California near its borders with the state of Arizona and the country of Mexico. Massive fish dieoffs have occurred, and much of the area is noted for its offensive smell. The Sea supported the creation of some resort communities such as Bombay Beach, but many of these places have all but disappeared as the shape and toxicity of the Sea have fluctuated.

It has been under the control of various empires since it was first settled in the second century AD. Established as an important trading post for the East Indian Company by Sir Stamford Raffles in the early 19th century it was taken over by the British government 1824. It was captured and occupied by the Japanese in WWII. There is an excellent museum on Sentosa Island which recalls that time. After the war Singapore reverted to British rule but became self-governing in 1959. As late as the 1960s it still retained its colonial atmosphere with gracious bungalows on Orchard Road and historic Chinese houses where the upstairs rooms had gratings in the floor through which the women of the house could observe visitors. There was an Arab quarter and Malays still carried on agricultural pursuits close to the capital. Now the island is very modern and multistorey buildings and modern infrastructure rule.

Athens is the capital city of Greece and is also the largest city in Greece. It has had inhabitants for at least seven thousand years. Athens is in the central plain of Attica, also known as the Athens Basin. The city is built around many hills, with one of the tallest hills named Lycabettus, which offers a wondrous view of the Attica Basin. The four familiar mountains, which border the Attica Basin, include Mount Aegaleo, Mount Parnitha, Mount Penteli and Mount Hymettus. The Parthenon's construction began in 449 BC with its completion in 438 BC. The Parthenon was actually used as a treasury to begin with and then it was converted into a Christian church in the 5th century AD. In 1460 the Ottoman Turk conquest resulted in the Parthenon being turned into a mosque with a minaret built in it. The Ottoman Turks stored ammunition inside the Parthenon and in 1687 the Venetians attacked and the Parthenon blew up because of the stored ammunition. The Parthenon was regarded as one of the finest Doric temples with beautiful Ionic constructed features. The Propylaia was the entrance to the Acropolis. It has undergone restoration since 1984 and is visited by thousands of tourists every year. The Erechtheum (Erechtheion), an ancient Greek temple, is located on the north side of the Acropolis. On the south side of this temple was the "Porch of Maidens" which had six female figures known as caryatids, who acted as supporting columns. Today, five remain and the sixth was removed and stands in the British Museum. The temple of Athena Nike was the first entirely Ionic temple situated on the Acropolis. In 410 BC a parapet was built around the temple to prevent people from falling down the cliffs.
