B Musicals Trivia Questions

1. "My name is Elder Price And I would like to share with you The most amazing book" These lyrics can be found in which song, which is the first in the play?

From Quiz
"Book of Mormon" on Broadway

Answer: Hello

The song "Hello" opens the musical and introduces the audience to the missionaries and their method of going door to door to introduce people to the Book of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. This opening song is a training exercise that highlights Elder Cunningham, a compulsive liar and inadequate trainee. "Book of Mormon" debuted on Broadway in 2011 with Josh Gad in the role of Elder Cunningham. Gad is very well known for voicing Olaf in "Frozen" and playing LeFou in the 2017 version of "Beauty and the Beast."

2. Who wrote the music and words for the play "Billy Elliot"?

From Quiz Billy Elliot-The Musical

Answer: Lee Hall and Elton John

Lee Hall came up with the idea about Billy Elliot when imagining a boy from a mining town wearing a tutu. He worked on the film's screenplay and his friend, Stephen Daldry, agreed to direct the movie. Its title when shown at the Cannes Film Festival of 2000 was "Dancer". The movie "Dancer in the Dark" won the Golden Palm Award that year for Lars von Trier and Best Actress for Bjork, prompting the change in the movie title to "Billy Elliot". Elton John attended the initial screening of the film in Cannes and was brought to tears by it. After the film ended it was suggested to him that it would make a good stage musical. He talked about the possibilities with the people who made the film and it all developed from there. When needing someone to write the words for the songs Elton talked Lee Hall into doing it even though Lee had never written songs before. Stephen Daldry is the director of the film and musical. Peter Darling is the choreographer of the film and musical. As of 2009 the people involved in both productions have put over a decade into "Billy Elliot".

12. More than once during the play, Billy mentions Owen Sound. Why?

From Quiz Billy Bishop Goes to War

Answer: It is his hometown.

Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada is a small city on an inlet of Georgian Bay (which is part of Lake Huron) that had a population of about 12,000 at the beginning of World War I. Billy mentions his small town roots in contrast to the high society that he finds himself part of after he's had some success as a pilot, and especially late in the play when he meets King George V, who pins some medals on Billy's chest, including the Victoria Cross. Billy's home in Owen Sound has been turned into a museum, which I had the pleasure of visiting a few years ago. He is also buried in his hometown, having died in Florida in 1956, aged 62.

13. "When I was young my dad, Would treat my mom real bad, every time the Utah Jazz would lose" These are lyrics from which song about hiding your feelings?

From Quiz "Book of Mormon" on Broadway

Answer: Turn It Off

The song "Turn it Off" features all the missionaries who are on a mission together in Uganda. When our two newest members, Elder Price and Elder Cunningham meet the group, they learn that there have been no successful conversions. Elder Price is feeling nervous about the mission and the gang breaks into the song "Turn it Off" which is all about pushing your nervous or negative thoughts deep down inside and pretending you don't have them. This upbeat number with rather dark lyrics includes a dance break and a costume change.

14. The first song of the musical is "The Stars Look Down". What event happens during the song?

From Quiz Billy Elliot-The Musical

Answer: The British Coal Miners' Strike of 1984 begins

In the original London Cast Recording there is a pause in the middle of the song and one of the miners yells "We're Out", signalling that the strike has begun. The tone of the song changes as shown in the lines "All out together, All out as one, All out for victory, till we've won". Billy also has his first solo in the middle of the song while the miners are off stage getting ready to hit the picket lines. The strike went on for a year and is considered by many to be the biggest crisis in Great Britain since World War II, pitting friends against each other, the police against the miners, and unions against other unions.

21. The play's first song talks of being off to fight in the war, even though most Canadians wouldn't know a German if they met one. How would "our medals" shine?

From Quiz Billy Bishop Goes to War

Answer: "Like a sabre in the sun."

Bishop and the Piano Player sing this song together, to open the play, and it has the feeling of a song sung by a group of kids setting out on a great adventure. A recurring line is "Somehow it didn't seem like war at all, at all, at all. Somehow it didn't seem like war at all." That sentiment is changed fairly early on, even before the front is reached, mostly due to a horrific ocean crossing on a cattle boat full of seasick soldiers and horses, because at this point Billy Bishop is a cavalry officer, destined for futile cavalry charges against machine guns. The song doesn't use the word "German", but a less PC word that rhymes with "sun" and "gun".

22. In which song do these lyrics appear? "It could be San Fran by the bay, Australia where they say "G'day!"

From Quiz "Book of Mormon" on Broadway

Answer: Two By Two

The song "Two By Two" appears pretty early on in Act I of the musical and it is in this song that Elders Price and Cunningham learn that they will be paired together and sent to Uganda for their mission. The other pairs learn about their destinations - France, Norway, Japan - and the lyrics are full of funny stereotypes about each location (pastries, gnomes and Mothra). Andrew Rannells initially played the role of Elder Price. He was nominated for a Tony Award for his role in this musical as well as the following year for his role in the musical "Falsettos". He won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album as a featured soloist on the original cast recording of "Book of Mormon".

23. The second song in "Billy Elliot" is "Shine", sung by Mrs. Wilkinson. What is Billy trying to do during the song?

From Quiz Billy Elliot-The Musical

Answer: Give the keys to the union hall to Mrs. Wilkinson

Billy is late for his boxing class at the union hall. After a poor performance in the ring, his coach has him stay extra and gives the keys for the building to him to give to Mrs. Wilkinson. This is a fun song to watch with the girls pushing Billy here and there to get him out of the way while he attempts to relinquish the keys. At one point Billy serves as the chair and is sat on; he also waves a big feather fan with the ballet girls.

24. What could you teach a hog to do, besides "ride and hunt", according to Tom Sawyer?

From Quiz Lyrics to "Big River"

Answer: smoke a cigarette

From one of my favorites, "Hand for the Hog".

25. Complete this question, sung by Gaston: "Will you be some ________ property?"

From Quiz "Beauty and the Beast" Lyrics

Answer: He-man's

Other enjoyable lines from the song "Me" include: "On occasion women can have their uses too, mainly to extend the family tree" and "We shall be the perfect pair, rather like my thighs!" This song does a rather good job of bringing Gaston from comic relief to the level of an actual villain.

26. How many Tony Awards did the show win?

From Quiz The Cold and Clear Quiz

Answer: One

Although nominated for Best Actress, Best Costume Design and Best Author of a Musical as well as Best Scenic Design, it only won Best Scenic Design. Oliver Smith designed the set for "Baker Street", and he died in 1994.

27. Finish the lyric "Once upon a time has never felt ___ _____"

From Quiz "Brooklyn" The Musical

Answer: more right

"Once upon a time has never felt more right", sung by the lead character Brooklyn. In my opinion this is the best song in the show. It establishes Brooklyn's character perfectly, it says "I'm not a little girl anymore" and finished on a high that will make you stand up and pay attention.

28. "Brooklyn" officially opened on Broadway in what year?

From Quiz "Brooklyn" The Musical

Answer: 2004
