Company Trivia Questions

1. Who wrote the book to Company?

From Quiz
In Comes 'Company!'

Answer: George Furth

It was George Furth's series of one-acts on marriage that spurred Hal Prince and Steve Sondheim to create 'Company.'

2. How many of Robert's girlfriends are featured in the show?

From Quiz The Good and Crazy People

Answer: Three

Marta, April and Kathy sing "You Could Drive a Person Crazy", remembering their experiences with the emotionally distant Robert. Robert and April have a duet in Act Two, "Barcelona".

3. What does Bobby think April's name is when she wakes up to go to Barcelona?

From Quiz In Comes 'Company!'

Answer: June

Both names are months, which is probably why Bobby confused them.

4. Which actor who was in the original Broadway cast of 'Company' went on to star in a sitcom alongside Candice Bergen?

From Quiz The Good and Crazy People

Answer: Charles Kimbrough

Charles Kimbrough was also in Sondheim's "Sunday in the Park with George", but is best known to television audiences as Jim Dial from "Murphy Brown".

5. Where can you feel New York, according to Marta?

From Quiz In Comes 'Company!'

Answer: The Rectum

Marta claims that a person can really feel New York by the tightness of his or her rectum.

6. Which original Broadway cast member was also seen on NBC's "Saturday Night Live"?

From Quiz The Good and Crazy People

Answer: George Coe

Coe appeared in six episodes of SNL, the last one being in 1978. He has also been in "Mame" and "On The Twentieth Century" on Broadway and in "Mighty Ducks" in the movies.

7. Where did Susan and Peter gain five pounds?

From Quiz In Comes 'Company!'

Answer: Mexico

Peter went down to Mexico to get a quickie divorce, and it was so nice that he called for Susan, and they both gained five pounds. Sort of like the Freshman Fifteen. Only, it's the Divorce Five. Which isn't alliterative.

8. Complete this lyric from "The Little Things You Do Together": "It's not talk of God and the _________ ahead that allows you to get through the worst . . . "

From Quiz The Good and Crazy People

Answer: Decade

"The Little Things You Do Together" is sung by Joanne and the company, describing the things that make a marriage work, such as swapping clothes, quitting cigarettes and destroying children...together!

9. What did Bobby bring to dinner with Sarah and Harry?

From Quiz In Comes 'Company!'

Answer: Brownies and Bourbon

Bobby brought the Bourbon, because he didn't know Harry was on the wagon, and he brought the brownies because he didn't know Sarah was on a diet. What a couple of faux pas!

10. The recording session of the cast recording was taped. Which song is shown last on the tape?

From Quiz The Good and Crazy People

Answer: The Ladies Who Lunch

For some reason, the tape does not show Dean Jones singing "Being Alive" after "The Ladies Who Lunch", as it normally happens in the show. Instead, "Ladies" comes after "Being Alive".

11. What does Joanne drink at the club?

From Quiz In Comes 'Company!'

Answer: Vodka Stinger

Joanne is constantly wanting more Vodka Stingers.

12. What did Amy leave out of the fridge overnight?

From Quiz In Comes 'Company!'

Answer: Orange Juice

Amy claims that the orange juice is "boiling" because it was left out of the fridge. That would mean the temperature of the apartment is over 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Amy is fond of hyperbole, perhaps.

13. What comes to David's mind when he sees Robert?

From Quiz The Good and Crazy People

Answer: The Seagram's building

David says this to the rest of the friends in the song "Side by Side by Side", which is immediately followed by "What Would We Do Without You?".

14. What is David's description of Jenny?

From Quiz In Comes 'Company!'

Answer: Square

David says he "married a square, a confessed square." Bobby: "Like a fox." Square or fox -- you be the judge.

15. Where is Kathy leaving New York for?

From Quiz In Comes 'Company!'

Answer: The Cape

She's going back to the Cape, to get hitched to someone who's not Bobby.

16. What drug does Robert try?

From Quiz The Good and Crazy People

Answer: Marijuana

Robert tries marijuana in a failed attempt to be cool. Curiously enough, marijuana has helped cure Sondheim of many a case of writer's block, as he himself admits in Meryle Secrest's biography.

17. What is the last action of the play?

From Quiz In Comes 'Company!'

Answer: Blowing out candles

Bobby finally blows out the birthday candles, now that he has driven all his loved ones away, never to return. Also, he had to build up the lung capacity. I mean, 35 candles is an awful lot to blow out. Oh, actually it's 36--one for good luck. And good luck to you, fair reader.

18. Complete this lyric from "Side by Side by Side": "Three is company, safe and ________"

From Quiz The Good and Crazy People

Answer: cheery

In "Side by Side by Side", Robert's friends praise Robert's character as he sings about being alone, which he claims he likes. The song opens Act Two, along with "What Would We Do Without You", which follows right after the song.

19. In "Getting Married Today", how many paperweights did Amy get?

From Quiz The Good and Crazy People

Answer: Forty-Seven

Suffering from intense pre-wedding jitters, bride-to-be Amy thanks her friends and guests for, among other gifts, the forty-seven paperweights. What would one do with forty-seven paperweights anyway?

20. Who hosted the concert version of the musical in 1993, which reunited the original Broadway cast?

From Quiz The Good and Crazy People

Answer: Patti LuPone

Patti LuPone is a celebrated Broadway actress whose other stage credits include "Anything Goes" and two productions of "Sweeney Todd": one with George Hearn in 2001 and the other on Broadway in 2006 with Michael Cerveris.

21. In "The Ladies who Lunch", what does Joanne urge the audience to do?

From Quiz The Good and Crazy People

Answer: Rise

At the end of the song, Joanne repeats the word "Rise!" to the audience. I don't know WHY she does this, but I think the alcohol she consumes throughout the song may have something to do with it.
