Authors T-Z: 'U' Trivia Questions

1. When Kristin is a girl, what mythical being does she see in the woods?

From Quiz
Kristin Lavransdatter I: The Wreath

Answer: An elf (or dwarf) maiden

Undset's novel is set during a time when pagan beliefs and superstitions still existed in Norway alongside the newly-brought Christian religion. Thus, Kristin's encounter with the creature, called both an elf and a dwarf in the story, is taken seriously and not written off as a figment of her imagination. Fru Aashild points out that Kristin could have tricked the maiden out of her golden crown if she (Kristin) had been thinking clearly.

2. What is Bony's full name and rank?

From Quiz Meet Bony! The Works of Arthur Upfield

Answer: Napoleon Bonaparte, Detective Inspector

Bony was named such by the people in charge of the orphanage at which he spent his early childhood. Born of an Aboriginal mother and a white father, he could hardly have had a lesser start in life than to be abandoned like that. The character Bony was based on a man Upfield met in his travels. Bonnay is an alias in "Bony and the Kelly Gang", the other two names are from my imagination.

3. What happens to Ulvhild as a result of the accident with the ox?

From Quiz Kristin Lavransdatter I: The Wreath

Answer: She's crippled.

Lavrans and Ragnfrid decide to give her to a convent because they think a cripple won't make a good marriage match. A priest remarks to Kristin that these days, it seems that only the crippled, ugly, and those unwanted by their parents go to God.

4. In "The Will Of The Tribe", how did Bony approach the campsite of the tribal Aboriginals?

From Quiz Meet Bony! The Works of Arthur Upfield

Answer: Bony squatted on his heels fifty yards away and waited for a welcome

"This one asks permission to enter the camp; have him brought in." So said the chief of the tribe. Bony, being part-Aboriginal, was simply being polite, the same as anyone knocking at the door. Those other ways in the question would have had no effect at all on the demeanor of the tribe - they would have dismissed Bony as of no importance.

5. Who tries to rape Kristin in the woods?

From Quiz Kristin Lavransdatter I: The Wreath

Answer: Bentein

She fights him off with rocks and her hands. Bentein's mother Gunhild heals her wounds, but partially blames her for the attack.

6. In "Bony and the Kelly Gang", which special festival did the Conway and Kelly families hold every year?

From Quiz Meet Bony! The Works of Arthur Upfield

Answer: The Ned Kelly Festival

In the non-existant Cork Valley, there dwelt two large families whose main passions in life seemed to be tax avoidance and the brewing of illicit liquor for sale. Now I'm sure we all like to minimise our taxes, but we don't all commit murder to that end. A most entertaining novel!

7. Besides being betrothed to Simon, why can't Kristin marry her childhood friend Arne?

From Quiz Kristin Lavransdatter I: The Wreath

Answer: Bentein stabs him to death.

Arne and Bentein get into a fight after drinking; a bishop has Bentein excommunicated. Arne's mother Inga blames Kristin for Arne's death, claiming that she allowed Arne and Bentein to take liberties with her.

8. In "The Mystery of Swordfish Reef", what was the name of Bill Spinks' boat?

From Quiz Meet Bony! The Works of Arthur Upfield

Answer: Do-Me

Bill's friends (in the story) would always be chiacking Bill about what innovations he was putting into the boat while building it, to which Bill would reply "well, she'll do me". So when the naming of the boat came about, the Do-Me was a popular suggestion.

9. Kristin deliberates over whether or not she should join a convent. Why does she not do so?

From Quiz Kristin Lavransdatter I: The Wreath

Answer: She doesn't think she can leave the material world behind.

Kristin believes that, if she gives herself to God, then God will work a miracle and cure Ulvhild of her lameness. In the end, Kristin knows she doesn't love the spiritual world that much, nor does she want to forsake the physical world, so she convinces herself that joining a convent won't make any difference to Ulvhild's health.

10. In the novel "Venom House", what was the 'unofficial' name for the body of water surrounding the house and garden?

From Quiz Meet Bony! The Works of Arthur Upfield

Answer: Answerth's Folly

The author here paints a most vivid word picture of a large house and extensive garden surrounded by water and only approachable either by boat or by wading through the knee-deep water. Man-made lake, too!

11. Who is the wandering monk with whom Kristin has a strong friendship?

From Quiz Kristin Lavransdatter I: The Wreath

Answer: Edvin

She tells him that she cannot marry Simon because of her love for Erlend. He says he cannot absolve her of sin, but advises her nonetheless. From him, she sees that going against her parents' wishes is as big a sin as adultery with Erlend. Edvin once nearly killed a man sent to stop him from building a church.

12. In "Murder Down Under", Bony has some advice for Detective-Sergeant John Muir, which is repeated to other policeman characters in some of the other Upfield books. How does this advice start off?

From Quiz Meet Bony! The Works of Arthur Upfield

Answer: Never race Time

Full quote -"Never race Time. Make Time an ally, for Time is the greatest detective that ever was or ever will be." This could be considered as Bony's personal philosophy of crime detection. Patience, patience, patience! This book was originally published as "Mr Jelly's Business" in 1937.

13. In "The Barrakee Mystery", Ralph Thornton asked his father what he should do now that he had finished with college. What was the father's suggestion?

From Quiz Meet Bony! The Works of Arthur Upfield

Answer: Join the Church

Thornton's father was only joking! Upfield implies that Thornton senior already knew what his son intended - to join him in running Barrakee station. "The Barrakee Mystery" was Upfield's first published book, in 1928, and was re-published as "Lure of the Bush" in the US in 1965.

14. What burns just before Kristin's marriage?

From Quiz Kristin Lavransdatter I: The Wreath

Answer: The church

She believes that the church burns as punishment for her sins; another character chides her for thinking that her sin was so important that God would punish her by burning a house of worship. Kristin also believes that the trauma of seeing the fire could have a negative effect on her unborn child.

15. In "Bushranger of the Skies" who else was in Rex's plane on its last flight?

From Quiz Meet Bony! The Works of Arthur Upfield

Answer: Burning Water

Burning Water, chief of the local Aboriginal tribe, sneaked aboard Rex's plane and managed to fight Rex in the air, causing both men to fall out in flight. Burning Water was already in disgrace with his people, and was seeking only to save his friend and brother, McPherson, whom Rex would have killed. A highly readable novel!

16. The story "Bony and the White Savage" names Marvin Rhudder as its chief villian, with murder and rape on his record. What was Rhudder doing before turning to crime?

From Quiz Meet Bony! The Works of Arthur Upfield

Answer: Attending theological college

Somewhat like a Jekyll and Hyde transformation, except Rhudder never went back to Jekyll.

17. Near the end of the book, what does Edvin say that he hoped Kristin would do?

From Quiz Kristin Lavransdatter I: The Wreath

Answer: Take her wreath to God and become a nun

Edvin tells Kristin that he hoped she would bring her wreath to God by becoming a nun. Kristin wears the bridal wreath of her family--a gold crown set with crystals. She feels guilty for wearing it when she's not a virgin and should be wearing a wimple to cover her hair. Even on her wedding day, she doesn't seem happy.

18. In the story "Cake in the Hat Box", just what did Kimberley Breen store in the locked hat box?

From Quiz Meet Bony! The Works of Arthur Upfield

Answer: Fruit cake and opals

A lockable hat box?! Naturally, if you don't want people pinching your fruitcake, not to mention your black opals.
