AHA! Trick question! Naomi was confused, but Mello explained it in the end. It just made the entire thing more confusing. This question is exactly why the book should have been read word for word. The answer is on page 166, almost the first sentence of the second paragraph. Even is you can't find it, scan the page until you find it.

Shortly after, Roger Ruvie tells both him and Mello that L has died. Near doesn't really react to this, and completes his puzzle before turning it upside down and letting the pieces fall away.
