Eric Trivia Questions

1. If there's incense, candles, and drawings on the floor, then you know something is going to be summoned. In 'Eric', who was summoned using the Rite of Ashkente?

From Quiz
#9 'Eric': Rincewind Returns

Answer: Death

The senior wizards at Unseen University wanted to know what was causing disruptions on the Discworld. The chaos had escalated to the point where the wizards' only option was to summon Death (and no wizard wants to attract his attention if they can help it). Death explained that Rincewind was causing the disruptions as he tried to get back to the Disc.

2. Who was Eric Thursley?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's "Eric"

Answer: A 13-year-old demonologist

After hurling through the dimension back to the Disc, Rincewind was relieved to find that he had landed on a solid surface with his body intact, but he found himself inside a magic circle that had been constructed by a pushy demonologist named Eric. Rincewind soon realized that the beard Eric was wearing was a disguise, and instead of being 87 years old as he claimed, Eric was actually a "nearly fourteen"-year-old boy. The fact that his mother called him to wash his hands and come down for breakfast was also a dead giveaway.

3. Rincewind tells Eric that, beside Eric's own blood, a contract with a demon can be signed in what?

From Quiz 'Eric' Random Questons

Answer: Bird's blood

He is sarcastically referring to Eric's annoying wossname, parrot.

4. Eric managed to summon Rincewind. Where was the wizard when Eric summoned him?

From Quiz #9 'Eric': Rincewind Returns

Answer: Dungeon Dimensions

Rincewind became trapped in the Dungeon Dimensions at the end of 'Sourcery'. It was not a good place for a wizard to be, and at the beginning of 'Eric' he was trying his hardest to escape. Getting out alive was a 'million to one chance'. Luckily, on the Discworld, million-to-one chances happen nine times out of ten. Eric, a teenage demonologist, attempted to summon a demon from the Dungeon Dimensions. Unfortunately for him, he ended up with Rincewind.

5. While pursuing Eric's list of demands, Rincewind and company visited the Tezumen Empire in the rain forests of Klatch. The Tezumen Empire bore a resemblance to which empire in the Americas?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's "Eric"

Answer: Aztec

Eric had a few demands, the first of which was to be the Ruler of the World. Despite Rincewind's insistence that he didn't have the power to grant wishes, Rincewind discovered that his fingers suddenly had magical power, and he was able to take Eric and the parrot to the sky over the Disc so that Eric could survey his realm. But Eric decided he wanted tribute from his subjects, so when Rincewind snapped his fingers, they next ended up in the jungles of Klatch in a land with jaguars, pyramids, obsidian knives, and sacrifices to the god Quezovercoatl - yes, a parody of the Aztec Empire.

6. Eric's grandfather tried for years to summon a succubus, but only succeeded in summoning a neuralger. What is a neuralger?

From Quiz 'Eric' Random Questons

Answer: A demon that comes and has a headache at you

Eric didn't exactly summon Rincewind. The Discworld Demons had arranged for Duke Vassenego to be ready and waiting when Eric finally succeeded in opening a circle. However, Rincewind went through first and the circle closed up immediately afterward. Death had said that it would be a million in one chance for Rincewind to escape the Dungeon Dimensions. And of course we know that in the Discworld million in one chances crop up nine times out of ten.

7. How many wishes did Eric demand from Rincewind?

From Quiz #9 'Eric': Rincewind Returns

Answer: 4

Rincewind kept telling Eric that he wasn't a demon, but the boy didn't believe him. The wizard (being as terrible at his craft as it were possible to be) didn't think he would be able to give Eric the things he wanted. Eric briefly began to come round to the truth, but then the Luggage appeared out of thin air. The storage item made of sapient pearwood would follow its master wherever he went - including to the Dungeon Dimensions and back again. Eric had three main requests, then added a chest of gold, 'just to be going on with'.

8. When Rincewind and the parrot entered the Tezumen pyramid, they found the prisoner Ponce da Quirm. What had da Quirm been searching for when he was captured?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's "Eric"

Answer: The Fountain of Youth

Ponce da Quirm bore a striking resemblance to Ponce de Leon. He told Rincewind that he had spent his entire life looking for the Fountain of Youth, which made Rincewind almost ask him why he just didn't enjoy his life rather than waste it conducting the search. Da Quirm was with a group of explorers when he was captured, but the others had "found religion", leaving him to be the one who was supposed to be sacrificed to Quezovercoatl.

9. The new King of the Demons was angry because none of the demons made it through the magic circle and into Eric's house. What was the new king's unpronounceable name?

From Quiz #9 'Eric': Rincewind Returns

Answer: Astfgl

The demons had come up with an ingenious plan. When Eric succeeded in opening a door between the Disc and the Dungeon Dimensions, Duke Vassenego was supposed to go through. When the portal actually opened, however, Rincewind beat him to it. Eric was under the impression that summoning a demon would give him power and control. Wizards never bothered with demonology, though. Any power that lay in demonology belonged to the demons. Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch is a village in Wales, and is the longest place name in Britain.

10. Who or what replaced Quezovercoatl as the god of the Tezumen Empire?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's "Eric"

Answer: The Luggage

You would think that the Demon King Astfgl would be happy that the Tezumen had brought "death and destruction to thousands of moderately blameless people", but he wasn't happy about losing potential converts. So he ordered the imp Quezovercoatl to appear to the Tezumen and get them to give up their bloodthirsty ways, but while the Tezumen had tall statues devoted to Quezovercoatl, in reality he was only six inches tall, and he ended up being squished by The Luggage. The Tezumen made The Luggage their new god, but we found out that they later gave up worshiping idols and turned atheist.

11. What was the last mistake the jaguar made when running from the Luggage?

From Quiz 'Eric' Random Questons

Answer: It turned to look back

The Luggage ends up killing the demon Queztlovercoatl (the acting god of the Tezumen) by stepping on him. The demon was after all only six inches high.

12. What happened when Rincewind clicked his fingers for the first time?

From Quiz #9 'Eric': Rincewind Returns

Answer: The four characters ended up in space looking down on the Discworld.

Rincewind began to question whether he had died and become a demon. Usually, when he snapped his fingers, nothing happened. This time was different. Rincewind appeared in space, floating over the Discworld with Eric, his parrot, and the Luggage. Eric had demanded mastery over every kingdom in the world. He looked down and asked, 'Can I have all of it?'

13. After Rincewind and Eric left the Tezumen Empire, they ended up in the Tsort Empire inside what large wooden object?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's "Eric"

Answer: A horse

The Tsort Empire turned out to have a lot in common with Troy, and the wooden horse - well it was like the Trojan Horse. When they climbed out of the horse, Rincewind noted that the builder had a sense of humor because the exit was the horse's rear end. When they exited the horse, they were surrounded by Tsortean soldiers who thought they were part of an Ephebian invasion force. They were able to get away thanks to the appearance of another wooden object, The Luggage.

14. Which ancestor of Rincewind do we meet?

From Quiz 'Eric' Random Questons

Answer: Lavaeolus

Lavaeolus ('Rinser of Winds') is a famous general who won a major war then took ten years to get home. (Sound familiar?) Riinjswin and Winswin are two of the demons in the 'Demonologie'. Rjinswand is the Roundworld alter ego of Rincewind, whose body he inhabits for a short time in 'The Colour of Magic' when the Octavo magically saves him from death after falling off Twoflower's dragon.

15. Rincewind and Eric ended up in the rain forests of Klatch. What did the Tezuman people want to do to the ruler of the world?

From Quiz #9 'Eric': Rincewind Returns

Answer: Sacrifice him

The Tezuman had a prophecy about the ruler of the world. The tribe had lived in a swampy jungle with limited natural resources (besides stone) and had a pretty awful god. They wanted to punish the person they believed to be behind the whole affair. Eric had wished to be the ruler of the world and now he was getting exactly what he wished for...

16. What city is mentioned in the song sung by the Ephebian soldiers on the beach before returning home?

From Quiz 'Eric' Random Questons

Answer: Heliodeliphilodelphiboschromenos

When Lavaeolus realizes the soldiers are getting drunk, he says they'll start singing "The Ball of Philodelphus", but Heliodeliphilodelphiboschromenos is actually the city we hear in the song.

17. Rincewind snapped his fingers again. What kind of wooden animal did he and Eric appear inside?

From Quiz #9 'Eric': Rincewind Returns

Answer: A horse

Eric wished to meet the most beautiful woman who had ever lived. When Rincewind clicked his fingers, the boy got what he wished for. The wizard and the amateur demonologist were teleported back in time to the Tsortean Wars. They tumbled out of a (humorously placed) hatch in a wooden horse and found themselves encircled by soldiers.

18. One of Eric's desires was to meet the most beautiful woman in the world, but she didn't quite live up to his expectations. Who was the woman that Eric met when Lavaeolus tried to rescue her?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's "Eric"

Answer: Elenor of Tsort

Elenor of Tsort bore a strong resemblance to Helen of Troy. Well, a resemblance in her story at least - physically, however, she was described as being plump, faded and having a bit of a mustache. When Rincewind told Eric who she was, Eric said "Don't be silly. She looks like my mum". Lavaeolus was a bit dismayed to find that instead of pining away during her imprisonment, she seemed to have adapted rather well; she had at least seven children. Elenor explained that the siege had taken a long time, and King Mausoleum had been "very kind". Exasperated that he had wasted time trying to rescue her, Lavaeolus responded, "Couldn't you, you know, have slipped us a note or something? Or invited us to one of the christenings?"

19. Where does Lavaeolus say his soldiers' brains are?

From Quiz 'Eric' Random Questons

Answer: Their jockstraps

He says this after saying they will start singing "The Ball of Philodelphus".

20. Eric wanted to meet the most beautiful woman who had ever lived on the Discworld and he got his wish. What was her name?

From Quiz #9 'Eric': Rincewind Returns

Answer: Elenor of Tsort

Eric and Rincewind - along with Lavaeolus, the creator of the wooden horse - used a secret passage to reach Elenor of Tsort. Eric failed to be specific about his wish and Elenor was older than he had expected. Well, it had been a long time since she had been captured! She'd even had a few children during the siege.

21. Which being did Rincewind discover was possibly his ancestor?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's "Eric"

Answer: Lavaeolus

As Rincewind and Eric were leaving the Tsort Empire, Eric pointed out that the name Lavaeolus meant "Rinser of winds". Eric told Rincewind that he didn't know if that meant that Lavaeolus was Rincewind's ancestor, but Rincewind thought he was and wished he had told Lavaeolus not to get married or visit Ankh-Morpork.

22. Who is the woman Lavaeolus is trying to rescue?

From Quiz 'Eric' Random Questons

Answer: Elenor of Tsort

Eric had asked Rincewind (who he thought was a demon) for the most beautiful woman in the world. Elenor WAS the most beautiful woman in the world when the siege began. But, "the siege seemed to go on for so long and King Mausoleum was very kind and I never liked it much in Ephebe anyway." The result is seven children and a plump figure with the beginnings of a mustache.

23. Eric wished to live forever. Rincewind clicked his fingers again and they were transported even further back in time. Which spectacular event were they able to observe?

From Quiz #9 'Eric': Rincewind Returns

Answer: The creation of the universe

The pair soon realised that 'living forever' meant existing from the creation of the universe right up to its final end. Rincewind and Eric appeared at the beginning of time, just before the Big Bang (which could have been a Big Hiss). They met one of the creators, who produced an egg and cress sandwich for Rincewind while they waited for everything to happen.

24. After leaving the Tsort Empire, Rincewind and Eric ended up in the nothingness before creation where they met a creator. What did the creator give Rincewind that led to the beginning of life?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's "Eric"

Answer: An egg and cress sandwich

The creator, who emphasized that he was "a" creator, not "the" creator, was a "little, rat-faced man... with a pencil behind one ear". He had offered Rincewind a sandwich, and while Rincewind was pleased to get an egg and cress sandwich, he was disappointed to find out that it had no mayonnaise on it. After the universe came into being, Rincewind ended up throwing the sandwich away after a couple of bites, and it was there on the beach that bacteria began to breed on the sandwich. Pratchett noted that "if only there had been some mayonnaise, life might have turned out a whole lot different".

25. Who is the explorer with whom Rincewind and Eric are to be executed by the Tezumen?

From Quiz 'Eric' Random Questons

Answer: Ponce da Quirm

He was looking for the Fountain of Youth. He was alone in the dungeon when Rincewind was thrown in because the rest of his men had found religion. And so was he, along with Rincewind and Eric. At least he was finding the Tezuman's unique form of religion.

26. Eric decided that he didn't want to live forever. He tried to run the magic circle in reverse, but the two of them didn't end up at home. Where did they go?

From Quiz #9 'Eric': Rincewind Returns

Answer: Hell

There had been a mutiny in Hell. Vassenego had gathered support while Astfgl had been on a mission to find Rincewind. The new king was awarded a 'promotion' to Supreme Life President of Hell. He set off on an eternity of bureaucracy while Vassenego took over the real running of things. Rincewind and Eric were allowed to escape from Hell along a road paved with good intentions.

27. In the end, Rincewind found out that he hadn't actually gained magical powers; he was being used in an attempt to overthrow the Demon King Astfgl. Who had used Rincewind to successfully usurp power from Astfgl?

From Quiz Terry Pratchett's "Eric"

Answer: Duke Vassenego

Duke Vassenego was described as "one of the oldest demons... If he didn't actually invent original sin, at least he made one of the first copies". Vassenego had used Rincewind to distract Astfgl; while Astfgl went chasing after Rincewind, Vassenego organized the plot to overthrow him. When Astfgl finally caught up with Rincewind in the underworld, Vassenego informed Astfgl that "the Council" had met and promoted him to Supreme Life President of Hell, and that he'd have a new and improved office where he would spend his time planning and documenting the "full, authoritative, searching and in-depth analysis" of the role of demons - basically a lot of busy work to keep him out of their way. Vassenego let Rincewind and Eric return to their world because "it's always a good thing to let a few tales spread".

28. What apparently is the origin of life on the Discworld?

From Quiz 'Eric' Random Questons

Answer: An egg and cress sandwich

Rincewind was hungry when they arrived at the beginning of the universe, so the creator they meet creates an egg and cress sandwich. Later, Rincewind throws it away. As the first high tide comes in, thousands of bacteria found themselves in the midst of a taste explosion and started to breed like mad. "If there had only been some mayonnaise, life might have turned out a whole lot different. More piquant, and perhaps with a little extra cream in it."
