Fun Trivia
Forced to choose between cutting themselves down to three meals a day and playing a game of foot-the-ball in order to satisfy the terms of a substantial endowment, the wizards of Unseen University benefit from the assistance of Mr Nutt (a candle dribbler), Trev Likely (a lad with a talent for kicking cans), Glenda (who runs the University Night Kitchen) and her fashion-obsessed assistant Juliet.

Unseen Academicals Trivia Questions

1. What weird creature is the Faculty hunting through the halls of UU?

From Quiz
See the Unseen Academicals

Answer: The Megapode

In UU the Megapode is, by tradition, hunted once every 100 years because A) you can't have a Megapode running around loose, as anyone'll tell you, and B) it is traditional. Aho! The Megapode! Yob Soddoth can be recognized by its widely known cry 'yerwhatyerwhatyerwhat'. ('Moving Pictures') The Eater of Socks once haunted the laundry of UU. ('Hogfather') Clinkerbell might be considered to be the troll equivalent of the Tooth Fairy - 'Bless dere little hearts'... ('Feet of Clay')

2. The new employee at Ankh-Morpork's Royal Art Museum, Rudolph Scattering, suffered from which phobia?

From Quiz "Unseen Academicals" by Terry Pratchett

Answer: Nyctophobia

Apeirophobia is the fear of infinity. Pogonophobia is the fear of beards, so stay away from Santa. Ranidaphobia is the fear of frogs, do not look at Kermit. Nyctophobia is, of course, the fear of the dark, which is very annoying if you are Rudolph and you are walking around the Museum at night, in the dark, alone.

3. Who is that skinny man with a big wooden duck strapped to his head, making flat honking noises?

From Quiz See the Unseen Academicals

Answer: Rincewind

Sheep shearer, beer drinker, bush ranger... Yes, it's Rincewind, who can't even spell wizard. As fleeing Megapode, he is responsible for the longest chase ever recorded in the sporting game 'Hunt the Megapode'.

4. Behold, the Emperor! But how often does the candle that never goes out ... not go out while Mr Smeems is Candle Knave?

From Quiz See the Unseen Academicals

Answer: Three times

'The candle that never goes out has failed to go out three times since I've been Candle Knave, lad. It's a record!' (Mr Smeems to Mr Nutt) We don't get to know why the Emperor should never go out, it's just one of those traditions.

5. Through the hallways of the Unseen University Rincewind, the Wizard, is being hunted by the members of staff as part of a tradition. What animal was Rincewind dressed up to represent?

From Quiz "Unseen Academicals" by Terry Pratchett

Answer: The Megapode

Every 100 years the tradition of Hunting the Megapode is re-enacted within the confines of the Unseen University. Apparently, according to the Master of the Traditions, the Megapode had escaped during the middle of dinner, some 1100 years ago. The resultant chaotic hunt was so much fun that it became a tradition to re-enact it with one of the wizards donning a Megapode costume while the others chased him through the University.

6. 'Traitor!' roared Ridcully. Whom did he mean?

From Quiz See the Unseen Academicals

Answer: The Dean - for leaving UU

The Dean has left UU and is now the new Archchancellor of the Brazeneck University. He did this (how dare he?) for reasons of remuneration! Ridcully is rather ... vexed.

7. Mr Nutt liked to explore the old, and no longer used, storerooms of the university. What rare species of 'Indoorovoore' did Mr Nutt find?

From Quiz "Unseen Academicals" by Terry Pratchett

Answer: The Uncommon Sock Eater

During the night Mr Nutt would wander the old corridors and investigate the old workshops and storerooms. He was able to find "some luminous spoon ants carrying a fork", and the Uncommon Sock Eater which is considered to be very rare. It is only by reading Terry Pratchett that mysteries, such as missing socks, are explained simply.

8. The first time the Faculty watched a football match someone explained the basic rules to them. Who?

From Quiz See the Unseen Academicals

Answer: Mr Ottomy, bledlow

UU lives fairly well on Archchancellor's Preserved Bigger's Bequest. The condition to this Bequest is that the University is to enter a team in the game of foot-the-ball at least once every twenty years. Unfortunately, this condition has been forgotten for about twenty years (give or take, you know, roundabout)... Well, about time to see what football is about. Mr Ottomy is not too happy about his role as teacher: He is used to shouting in public. Speaking in public is a different kettle of humiliation for him.

9. Originally the game of "foot-the-ball" was created to pay honour to which deity?

From Quiz "Unseen Academicals" by Terry Pratchett

Answer: Pedestriana

An urn had been located in the Royal Art Museum containing the original rules for foot-the-ball which had been written some 1000 years before. All the names given are names of Gods in other Pratchett novels. Blind Io can be found in "Small Gods" and is the king of the Discworld Gods. The Lady, also known as the 'million to one chance', can be found in "The Colour of Magic", "Interesting Times", and "The Last Hero". Flatulus is the Ephebian God of the Winds and can be found in "The Last Hero". Pedestriana is the Goddess of football and makes her first appearance in "Unseen Academicals". "Pedestrian", of course, means someone who uses their feet.

10. The Faculty is discussing football and the building of the future UU team. Concerning that, to what exactly should a couple of inches be added (to prevent mobbing by the ladies)?

From Quiz See the Unseen Academicals

Answer: The team's short trousers

After discovering that a team wears short trousers to play a game of football (about mid-knee), and determining that 'a glimpse of the male knee can drive women into a frenzy of libidinousness' (which, as we know, is true), Mustrum Ridcully pronounces this memorable rule.

11. Juliet and Glenda attend the opening of a new clothing shop and Juliet is asked by the owner to model the latest design. What material was the dress made out of?

From Quiz "Unseen Academicals" by Terry Pratchett

Answer: Micromail

Whilst going to the opening of the new clothing store, Shatta, Juliet is talent-spotted and asked to model the latest design made out of a new material called Micromail, which unlike ordinary mail does not chafe. Juliet is a great success making her the first supermodel in Discworld.

12. Throughout the book Mr Nutt is accompanied by cries indicating his true species. What does he hear?

From Quiz See the Unseen Academicals

Answer: Awk! Awk!

In the beginning of 'Unseen Academicals' everyone (including Mr Nutt) believes that Mr Nutt is a goblin. Later on, we (and said Nutt) find out that he is actually from the orc race. As the orc race is feared for its savagery (even more so than the elves, the Nac Mac Feegle and the, well, humans) it is generally thought wiser to claim that Mr Nutt is a goblin.

13. When Glenda Sugarbean needs to talk to Lord Vetinari, she bribes his guards so that they let her pass. What does she use?

From Quiz See the Unseen Academicals

Answer: A Jammy Devil

Glendy uses Jammy Devils, one per guard. The infamous Meat Pie Floater was encountered (and defeated) by Rincewind. ('The Last Continent') The Doughnut Jimmy is actually Ankh-Morpork's finest horse doctor. ('Feet of Clay') Who (or what) could be bribed by CMOT Dibbler's Sausage in a Bun is anybody's guess.

14. At the end of 'Unseen Academicals' Mr Nutt is granted one favour by Lord Vetinari. Which one?

From Quiz See the Unseen Academicals

Answer: He is given one of the city's Golem horses

Mr Nutt borrows the Golem horse in order to take Glenda for a ride through Quirm on a warm summer's evening. She has secretly wanted to have such a ride, as Juliet had previously told Mr Nutt.

15. One of the ways that the wizards kept themselves out of trouble was to "mess about in their study". What incongruity existed within the Archchancellors study?

From Quiz "Unseen Academicals" by Terry Pratchett

Answer: A half a mile of trout stream

Before anybody writes to correct me, aunt is spelled correctly. Using magic Archchancellor Ridcully has the luxury of his own personal trout stream, in his bathroom, to relax by.
