New Jack City Trivia Questions

1. The director of this film also has a small role in the movie, appearing as a police sergeant. Who is it?

From Quiz
"New Jack City" - the Cash Money Quizzes

Answer: Mario Van Peebles

Mario's role in this movie is Sgt. Stone, a member of the NYPD who is tasked with doing something about the drug problem in New York City. Mario Van Peebles is the son of filmmaker Melvin Van Peebles, who made his name as a director of "Blaxploitation" flicks in the 1970s. This was son Mario's first foray as a director.

2. What is the name of Nino Brown's gang?

From Quiz Living In A "New Jack City"

Answer: Cash Money Brothers

It's CMB for short. The gang's name is repeated countless times throughout the movie. The Lennox Ave. Boys were a gang that Nino belonged to in his earlier days on the streets, when he killed Scottie's mother. There were no gangs known as the New Jacks or the Carter Project Gang.

3. Wesley Snipes plays a central role, as a drug kingpin with dreams of running an empire. What is his character's name in the movie?

From Quiz "New Jack City" - the Cash Money Quizzes

Answer: Nino Brown

Snipes gets a chance to play a pure villain, though his talent and general likability is such that the audience isn't asked to truly turn against Nino Brown until the third act of the movie when his empire crumbles. Up until that point in the story arc, he imbues his character with some attractive characteristics that keep Nino Brown from looking like the pure Bad Guy. This film was released in the middle of a major career apex for Wesley. Starting in 1989, he made a string of high-profile movies, starting with 'Major League', 'Mo Better Blues', then 'New Jack City', 'Jungle Fever', 'White Men Can't Jump', 'Passenger 57' and 'Demolition Man' - all in a span of about four years.

4. Early on, Nino said: "You gotta rob to get rich in the _________".

From Quiz Living In A "New Jack City"

Answer: Reagan era

He was talking to Kareem, his newest employee, who mentioned how his decision to work for Nino instead of a bank was based on logic and economics. Selina said he was attracted to Nino's entrepreneurial spirit.

5. Several scenes take place at a night club, with Flavor Flav making a cameo appearance as a club DJ. What is the club called?

From Quiz "New Jack City" - the Cash Money Quizzes

Answer: The Spot Lite

There are a number of key scenes that take place in the Spot Lite, including the tense confrontation with Frankie Needles and his Mafia cronies. There are also some hilariously dated scenes of 80s dance moves, and even a song by flash-in-the-pan R&B group Guy - who were introduced in the movie by Fab 5 Freddy (at the time an MTV VJ).

6. What was Gee-Money's real first name?

From Quiz Living In A "New Jack City"

Answer: Gerald

Chief Stone mentions his name to Scottie early on, when he is getting briefed on the CMB and their operations.

7. What do the locals call the courtyard at the Carter project where people stay to get high?

From Quiz Living In A "New Jack City"

Answer: The Enterprise

They call it the Enterprise because, in Pookie's own words: "when you're getting high, they say you're beaming up to Scottie... it's like crackhead is the final frontier..." Hence the "Star Trek" reference.

8. What comedian and actor - who appeared on "Saturday Night Live" and eventually would go on to host the Academy Awards - plays a drug addict in the movie who gets recruited to help the police?

From Quiz "New Jack City" - the Cash Money Quizzes

Answer: Chris Rock

This was one of Chris Rock's earliest film roles, and his performance as Pookie is impressive. His character goes through the throes of addiction, then gets clean by going through rehabilitation. He then becomes a police informer in an attempt to bring down the drug syndicate run by Nino Brown.

9. What crime boss did Nino and his gang have constant problems with?

From Quiz Living In A "New Jack City"

Answer: Don Armateo

Nino used to work for Don Armateo, but he branched out on his own with CMB, and this did not make the Don happy. Among other things, Nino told off his right-hand man, Frankie Needles, then on another occasion he forcibly cut off Frankie's pony tail. Eventually the situation got so bad that Nino sent a pair of his men (even with masks on, I'm almost positive the shooter was Gee-Money), who gunned down Armateo in front of a cafe in Little Italy.

10. "You're not giving me what I need to win this war. I need cops that know these streets. I need some new-jack cops to take down a new-jack gangster. What you call a risk? I call our only shot." Who says this?

From Quiz "New Jack City" - the Cash Money Quizzes

Answer: Stone

I chose to use this quote since it is the only time in the movie when the phrase "new jack" is used an adjective to describe something. This scene shows Sgt. Stone (Mario Van Peebles) arguing with the Police Commissioner about the need to assign some street-wise cops to a task force specifically aimed at stopping Nino Brown.

11. Nino becomes insulted when mafioso Frankie Needles brings him a gift on New Year's Eve. What is in the box that causes Nino to take such great offense?

From Quiz "New Jack City" - the Cash Money Quizzes

Answer: A small statue of a jockey with a rope around its neck

The Mob is unhappy that they are cut out of the deal by Nino, and they want to send him a message. But Nino sends them a message right back, including smashing the jockey statue over Frankie's head and then cutting off his ponytail. In retaliation, the Mafioso unsuccessfully attempt to assassinate Nino at a wedding shortly thereafter.

12. Who was the singer at the wedding where the gunfight erupted between the CMB and the Italians?

From Quiz Living In A "New Jack City"

Answer: Keith Sweat

He was one of many artists to make a cameo appearance in the movie, along with Public Enemy's Flava Flav and the R&B group, Guy.

13. What does the old man from the Carter building repeatedly refer to Nino as?

From Quiz Living In A "New Jack City"

Answer: Idolater

The old man hated Nino for turning his building into a drug complex, and for getting people hooked on the idol that was freebase. He was so angry about this that he made two separate attempts on Nino's life: the first time he was foiled by Scottie (who of course had to maintain his cover as someone Nino could trust). The second time he was successful, shooting Nino dead just outside the courtroom after Nino's trial.

14. What egotistical phrase is repeated several times in the movie by Nino, which happens to be something that Al Pacino says numerous times in the movie 'Scarface'?

From Quiz "New Jack City" - the Cash Money Quizzes

Answer: The world is mine.

This must be inspired by 'Scarface', since it features prominently in that film - first Tony Montana sees the phrase on a passing blimp, and then he has a globe in the entryway of his mansion with that phrase flashing across it. Basketball player Shaquille O'Neal even created a company at one point called TWISM (an acronym for 'The World is Mine'), since Shaq was such a fan of the movie 'Scarface'.

15. Fill in the missing words from this Nino Brown quote to Scottie: "My brother, it's always business, _________."

From Quiz Living In A "New Jack City"

Answer: never personal

Nino was telling Scottie about the time he killed an innocent stranger (who turned out to be Scottie's mother) to get into the L.A. Boys gang. Scottie tried to act like he was on Nino's side, saying it was just business, and nothing personal, to which Nino replied with the above quote.

16. In the penultimate scene, Nino is arrested and tried for his numerous crimes. What is his fate at the end of the film?

From Quiz "New Jack City" - the Cash Money Quizzes

Answer: Shot and killed by an angry old man

Nino cuts himself a sweetheart deal to get out of serving any serious time, but he doesn't get out of facing some 'street justice'. The old man who shoots Nino is seen a number of times earlier in the film - early on, in the police station, he's complaining to a duty sergeant about the fact that the CMB have taken over an entire tenement building; later the same man pulls a gun on Nino as he is giving money away to poor citizens and accuses him of "poisoning his own people." Nino and his crew laugh at him, but the old man gets the last laugh in the end.

17. Which member of Nino's gang ends up on crack late in the movie?

From Quiz Living In A "New Jack City"

Answer: Gee-Money

After Nino chews out Gee-Money in front of everyone for letting the Carter get infilitrated, we see Gee-Money saying wedding vows to a crackpipe before lighting up. Later, we notice him looking somewhat haggard when he meets with Scottie and Piretti, who of course were undercover at the time.
