The 2011 contest, held in Dusseldorf's Esprit Arena, was won by Azerbaijan, with the song "Running Scared" by Ell & Nikki. Host country Germany, winner of the 2010 edition, was represented by 2010 winner Lena Meyer-Landrut, who had returned to the contest to defend her title.

All these song titles were performed in 1986 at the ESC. Sandra Kim, born Sandra Caldarone, won with an enthusiastic performance of "J'aime la Vie" ("I Love Life"). The Swiss delegation moved for a disqualification as the lyrics of this song state "J'ai quinze ans" ("I'm fifteen years old"), which was not true at that time. However, in 1986 there was no alternative version for young participants, so Sandra Kim could keep the title. As for the other songs: Timna Brauer sang "Die Zeit ist Einsam" ("The Time Is Lonely") for Austria and finished 18th. Ketil Stokkan competed for Norway and sang "Romeo". He became 12th. Gali Atari was a female solo artist who was asked to join Milk & Honey for this song. She took to the stage in a gorgeous pink dress and sang the first verse on her own. The song was so popular on the night, the crowd were on their feet cheering before it had finished.

Although her final position is unknown, she is said to have done well with her song "Voorgoed voorbij". The 1968 Contest ended with a shock result when Sir Cliff Richard was defeated by the Spanish beauty Maria de los Angeles Santamaria, better known as Massiel. She la-la-la-ed Spain to a glorious first ever victory. The song was supposed to have been performed by Joan Manuel Serrat, but when he insisted on singing it in Catalan the Spanish broadcasters asked Massiel to sing the song at London's Royal Albert Hall. She won the contest with 29 points, 6 of which came from West Germany. It was remarkable that Spain and the UK failed to vote for each other at all.

In 1974 the contest was held in Brighton, England, and the United Kingdon jury, presumably transfixed by the outlandish clothes worn by the Swedish entry, gave them no points. The group was ABBA with the memorable song "Waterloo", and the rest, as they say, is history. One of the UK jury members is quoted as saying that they formed a support group to live with what they had done.
