Manfred Mann was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1940 as Manfred Lubowitz. Having moved to the UK in 1961, Mann met up with Mike Hugg to form the Mann-Hugg Blues Brothers. With the addition of vocalist Paul Jones and other members, the band were performing under the name Manfred Mann by the time of their first recording contract in 1963.
