OK Go Trivia Questions

1. The video for "Oh No's" first single saw the band performing a choreographed dance in a garden somewhere. What was the song beginning with "Sit back, matter of fact, teasing, toying, turning, chatting, charming, hissing, playing the crowd"?

From Quiz
OK Go - "Oh No"

Answer: A Million Ways

Although all of these were lead singles from their albums (or, in the case of "The Greatest Song I Ever Heard", a soundtrack), "A Million Ways" was the first to come off the "Oh No" album, appearing in 2005 (with the disc release) and charting in the UK, but not North America. The video was particularly interesting, especially since it started the group's long-running tradition of single-take music videos. In this one, the four members of the band sang and danced while lip-synching the lyrics. The entire thing was shot in Damian Kulash's backyard by his sister, Trish Sie, who would later direct a number of the band's videos including "White Knuckles" and "Skyscrapers", both from the "Of the Blue Colour of the Sky" album.

2. OK Go's Damian Kulash (singer/guitarist) met Tim Nordwind (bassist) at an art camp when they were 11. Tim went for the music, but Damian went for another subject. Which?

From Quiz Ready to Take this Quiz? OK Go!

Answer: Graphic design; someone needs to design the t-shirts

The two original band members met over a game of Ping Pong, in which Damian was victorious. After the camp was over, they remained in contact, sending each other mixtapes. They would meet OK Go's original lead guitarist/keyboardist Andy Duncan in high school and drummer Dan Konopka in college. The band officially formed in 1998.

3. The release of "Oh No" saw the departure of former guitarist Andy Duncan. He was replaced by which band member?

From Quiz OK Go - "Oh No"

Answer: Andy Ross

While Andy Duncan performed the guitar and background vocals on the tracks for "Oh No" (and the band's eponymous first album), he departed from the group in 2005 shortly after the sophomore disc's release. To fill the void left over, the band brought on a new Andy-- Andy Ross-- who had begun with his own band, Secret Dakota Ring, before settling into his new role in OK Go. He has since released a couple of solo effort under the SDR name and under his own personal label. It wouldn't be until "Of the Blue Colour of the Sky" that Andy would appear on an OK Go album release, five years after "Oh No".

4. Andy Duncan (guitar/keyboards) was originally the lead guitarist and keys player for OK Go, performing on the band's debut album "OK Go" and their follow up album "Oh No" before leaving them in 2005. Whom did OK Go replace Duncan with?

From Quiz Ready to Take this Quiz? OK Go!

Answer: Andy Ross& Ross

Andy Ross was chosen out of roughly thirty five musicians that auditioned for the band. Ross is also a co-founder for Serious Business Records.

5. "When they finally come to destroy the Earth, they'll have to get through you first." This lyric appears in what OK Go song from the "Oh No" album?

From Quiz OK Go - "Oh No"

Answer: Invincible

Appearing on an earlier EP a few months before the "Oh No" album's release in 2005, "Invincible" ended up becoming a single, the fourth from the disc. While the song did not chart in any country, it did become the first track on the new album. The music video for "Invincible", directed in part by lead singer Damian Kulash, featured different things exploding in slow-motion-- the best way, of course, to watch things explode.

6. OK Go gained fame for being the house band of the public radio show "This American Life" for the show's fifth anniversary tour. On the show, the band performed a choreographed dance to what song?

From Quiz Ready to Take this Quiz? OK Go!

Answer: C-C-C-Cinnamon Lips

Their success on the radio show and their relationship with the up-and-coming band They Might Be Giants influenced the band to release their first album, "OK Go".

7. During the music video for this song, the band (and others) performed in camouflage, blending in with wallpapers (similar to the design on the album cover). What song was it?

From Quiz OK Go - "Oh No"

Answer: Do What You Want

"Do What You Want" was actually released on a promotional EP (with "Invincible" and a Cure cover, "The Lovecats") three months before the release of "Oh No" though it became the album's second single in April of the following year. Although it didn't chart in the U.S., the song was popular enough to warrant several videos, the most popular of which may have been the wallpaper version in which several people dressed in wallpaper-designed body suits performed different activities. It was one of the few videos of theirs not to be done in the single-take style that made them popular online.

8. OK Go hit it big in Britain with what single, reaching number 21 on UK Singles Chart in 2002?

From Quiz Ready to Take this Quiz? OK Go!

Answer: Get Over It

"Get Over It", off of the band's self-titled debut album, also hit number 20 on Hot Modern Rock Tracks. "Don't Ask Me" was also released as a single but failed to chart anywhere. Too bad, I like that song better.

9. "Super automatic pilot motor running down circles in the parking lot" In what song from "Oh No" could the preceding lyrics be found?

From Quiz OK Go - "Oh No"

Answer: Let It Rain

"Super automatic pilot motor running down circles in the parking lot Self-sustaining system bit her in the neck and quick and kissed her and took all she got." "Let It Rain" was never released as a single from "Oh No", but positioned in the middle of the disc it provided a brief, downbeat interlude between otherwise quicker songs-- it was followed immediately by the more festive "Crash the Party". Although the song was a part of the band's setlist in the early days it was removed from live shows upon the release of their third album.

10. What major single from the "Oh No" album famously won a Grammy Award for a music video featuring the band dancing on treadmills?

From Quiz OK Go - "Oh No"

Answer: Here It Goes Again

"Here It Goes Again", perhaps OK Go's trademark song, found fame as a viral video after the band performed a choreographed routine directed by Kulash's sister, Trish Sie. The Grammy Award winner for Best Short Form Music Video in 2007, it catapulted the band into the public eye and set a standard for the group's later videos. Many of their videos from their follow-up album, "Of the Blue Colour of the Sky", would be done in one continuous take. This one took over a dozen to get right. "Here It Goes Again" reached number thirty-eight on the Billboard Hot 100, their highest rank to date. It was the fifth and final single off "Oh No".

11. "Whose house are you haunting tonight?" In what single from "Oh No" are these lyrics said?

From Quiz OK Go - "Oh No"

Answer: Oh Lately It's So Quiet

The first song on the album to not be energetic, "Oh Lately It's So Quiet" is a song about a defunct relationship. Unlike some of the other singles released from "Oh No", this one did not receive the music video treatment, instead being used solely as a promotional release in North America. It failed to chart and ultimately got dropped from the band's live setlists in later years. It did appear on their first live release (online only, "Live from the Fillmore - New York at Irving Plaza").

12. Where did a ridiculous band name like OK Go even come from?

From Quiz Ready to Take this Quiz? OK Go!

Answer: An art teacher

According to an interview, the band name comes from an art teacher at the art camp that Damian and Tim went to (as mentioned above). The teacher would say "ok... go!" for the kids to start drawing.

13. Which song from "Oh No" did not subsequently appear on the band's live release, "180/365"?

From Quiz OK Go - "Oh No"

Answer: It's a Disaster

"180/365", released in mid-2011, was named because the band performed one hundred and eighty shows in a single year, recording each live event and selecting the best takes of each song (each from a different venue) to include on the disc. While much of "Of the Blue Colour of the Sky" was used (it being a newer album), four "Oh No" singles were included. The setlist began with "Do What You Want" and later included "A Million Ways", "Invincible", and the classic "Here It Goes Again". Three songs were also included from the band's eponymous debut album; the rest were from later in their discography. "It's a Disaster", while an upbeat song, was never a single and was not included in the setlist.

14. What soccer team did OK Go write a fight song for?

From Quiz Ready to Take this Quiz? OK Go!

Answer: Chicago Fire

The song was available for download on the team's official website. The band is originally from Chicago, Illinois.

15. Which song appeared on the "Oh No" album release?

From Quiz OK Go - "Oh No"

Answer: The House Wins

"The House Wins" was the final, non-instrumental song on the album. Not released as a single, it ended up being one of the few down-tempo songs in the disc (like "Let It Rain" and "Oh Lately It's So Quiet"). All of the other selections were songs from their subsequent album, "Of the Blue Colour of the Sky". "This Too Shall Pass" in particular was the second single from that release, and the highest-charting.

16. The hit single "Here it Goes Again" mentions the name of what album in its lyrics?

From Quiz Ready to Take this Quiz? OK Go!

Answer: Surfer Rosa

"Throw on your clothes, the second side of 'Surfer Rosa', and you leave me with my jaw on the floor" "Just when you think that you're in control, just when you think you've got a hold!' Sorry, got carried away there. "Surfer Rosa" is the name of the popular album by American alternative rock band the Pixies. This album is frequently cited as being the Pixie's best, and being a major influence on the incredible work of Kurt Cobain (singer/guitarist for the band Nirvana). It is ranked number 315 on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time".

17. Some releases of the "Oh No" album end with a thirty-five minute track of silence. What is its name?

From Quiz OK Go - "Oh No"

Answer: 9027 km

While the relevance of an otherwise space-filling track on the album has not been discussed, it does appear on the North American album (physical release only-- not on iTunes as a single). Fans have tried to analyze the reasons as to why "9027 km" was added; it was later determined that this was the exact distance between Los Angeles, California, the band's main base of operations, to the city of Malmö, Sweden, where the band recorded their album. Their next album, "Of the Blue Colour of the Sky", was recorded in New York.
