MLB Mixture Trivia Questions

1. The first All Star game was played at Comiskey Park in 1933. The American League won the game 4-2. Who was the winning pitcher and who picked up the save for the A.L.?

From Quiz
Out of the Park Baseball

Answer: Lefty Gomez (win) Lefty Grove (save)

Gomez was the starting pitcher for the American League and grabbed the win thanks to a 2 run homer by 38 year old Babe Ruth in the bottom of the third, that put the A.L. in front 3-0 (and the A.L. stayed in front, winning the game 4-2). Grove pitched three shutout innings to finish the game and earn the save.

2. Brooklyn Robins manager Wilbert "Uncle Robbie" Robinson wanted to catch a baseball dropped from an airplane, but what did he end catching in the end on March 13, 1915?

From Quiz Did I Do That?

Answer: Grapefruit

Wilbert Robinson heard about Gabby Street catching a baseball dropped from the top of the Washington Monument. He wanted to do something similar so the Robins trainer, Jack Coombs, hired a pilot and a biplane to drop a baseball. The plan hit a snag, though, when neither brought a baseball. Thinking on her feet, the pilot gave Jack her grapefruit she was going to eat for lunch. Jack dropped the grapefruit from six hundred feet in the air. The grapefruit hit Wilbert's glove, splattered, and knocked Wilbert to the ground. While everyone else thought it was funny, Wilbert wasn't amused. FYI, while Wilbert Robinson was manager, the Brooklyn baseball team was known as the Robins in his honor.

3. What occurred on Opening Day in 2017 that had never happened before on Opening Day?

From Quiz Bucket of Baseballs

Answer: A pitcher hit two home runs

San Francisco Giant starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner not only brought his arm to the game, but his hot bat also. On Opening Day, April 2, the Giants were hosted by the Diamondbacks. Bumgarner greeted Arizona pitcher Andrew Chafin in the second inning with a home run to left field. In the fifth, he shook his bat at Zack Greinke with a ball over the left-centerfield fence. The Giants still lost the game 6-5.

4. In the 2010s decade who was the first player to win the league MVP and Cy Young Award in the same season in the National League?

From Quiz Juggled Baseballs

Answer: Clayton Kershaw

The others weren't pitchers. The Dodgers had a gold mine in Kershaw and watched him win the NL Cy Young Award in 2011, then win it in 2014 along with the league's MVP.
