F1 GP 1980s Trivia Questions

1. Which driver replaced Carlos Reutemann at Williams for the 3rd round at Long Beach?

From Quiz
Formula 1 Season 1982

Answer: Mario Andretti

Andretti replaced the veteran Argentitian for one race before Derek Daly took over in the FW08 from Zolder. Andretti wasn't happy with the Williams car around the street circuit and went back to Champ cars before making a final return to F1 for Ferrari later in the year.

2. How many teams competed in at least one Grand Prix during the 1983 season?

From Quiz 1983 Formula One Season

Answer: 16

Sixteen teams would compete in 1983, although the Spirit team would only make their appearance on the grid from the British Grand Prix onwards. The reigning World Champion remained with the Williams-Ford team and carried the Number One, but it would be a difficult season for the team as the Ford DFV was finally starting to look long in the tooth against the turbos. Ferrari, Renault and the BMW powered Brabham dominated the season, while Lotus managed to get their hands on a Renault turbo, Williams tested the new Honda turbo in preparation for 1984 (thanks to the Spirit team), while McLaren tested the new TAG sponsored Porsche turbo.

3. Who entered the 1981 Formula One season as the reigning World Champion and with the number one car?

From Quiz 1981 Formula One Season

Answer: Alan Jones

Alan Jones was the 1980 Formula One World Champion, driving for the Williams-Ford team. Jones had joined Williams in 1978, and three years with other teams, including a fortuitous win in the 1977 Austrian Grand Prix for Shadow. Jones started winning regularly in 1979, when the team introduced the ground-effect Williams FW07, though it was Clay Regazzoni who actually won the first race for Williams at the 1979 British Grand Prix. For 1980, Jones was joined by Carlos Reutemann. Jones eventually won five races in 1980 and with a number of other strong finishes, and won the World Championship on 67 points.

4. Which driver started the most races from pole position in the 1984 season?

From Quiz 1984 Formula One

Answer: Nelson Piquet

He nailed nine poles that season in the powerful Brabham BT53 BMW. That season, Vespa, the Italian scooter company awarded a new scooter to the pole sitter of each race, so Piquet had a garage full of two-wheelers.

5. How many times did Renault sweep the front row (as in qualify 1-2) during the 1982 season?

From Quiz 1982 Formula One Season

Answer: 7

Renault swept the front row at the San Marino, Belgian, Dutch, French, German (Pironi was fastest but did not start after a qualifying accident), Swiss, and Las Vegas Grand Prix. In total Renault took ten pole positions, with Alain Prost and Rene Arnoux taking five each.

6. With the new rules governing Formula One after the elimination of turbocharging at the end of 1988, how many drivers attempted to qualify at the first race in Brazil?

From Quiz Formula One 1989

Answer: 38

38 drivers in 20 teams attempted to go for the 26 grid spots. There were so many cars, in fact, that a pre-qualifying system was introduced, in which 13 cars participated in a cut-throat 30 minute session on Friday morning with only 4 being allowed into qualifying proper.

7. After six years of struggle, the Benetton clothing group acquired the Toleman team and renamed the team Benetton. What engine did the team use in 1986?

From Quiz Formula One 1986

Answer: BMW

After using the unfancied Hart engine for the best part of five years, Benetton dumped the underpowered machines for the latest batch of BMWs. And the team put them to good effect, with their driver Gerhard Berger winning in Mexico City and putting in several other good drives. Although the engines did have a habit of blowing up, particularly in qualifying...

8. The 1989 Australian G.P. was the last race for Rene Arnoux before retirement. At the drivers' briefing, what special thing did he do?

From Quiz 1980s Formula 1 [2]

Answer: He gave a leather wallet to every driver.

He personally gave to every driver present a leather wallet. Towards the end of his driving career, he did not make many friends on the track, being road-blocking and unyielding to quicker drivers. But this going away gesture proved that the man was sensitive and caring.

9. What caused Clay Regazzoni's horrific crash at Long Beach in 1980?

From Quiz 1980s Formula 1 [1]

Answer: Brake pedal breakage.

It was his brake pedal that failed, at the end of the long stretch sending him crashing into the abandoned Brabham of Riccardo Zunino. Very sad ending of a somewhat good driver's career. He survived after this accident, but permanently paralysed.

10. How many Circuits in the United States of America, were used during the 1980's for World Championship Grand Prix?

From Quiz Formula One in the 1980s

Answer: 6

The six were:- Long Beach, Watkins Glen, Las Vegas, Detroit, Dallas and Phoenix.

11. Who effectively took over as head of engineering at Williams for the season while Patrick Head was preoccupied with the Metro 6R4 rally programme?

From Quiz Formula 1 Season 1982

Answer: Frank Dernie

Frank Dernie worked well with Rosberg and helped the Finn to perform consistently over the season -- six podiums in 16 races, and the driver's championship.

12. Elio de Angelis was awarded victory at the San Marino Grand Prix, but only after the disqualification of which driver?

From Quiz 1985 Grand Prix Season

Answer: Alain Prost

The FIA had introduced fuel limits for turbocharged engines, with the litre capacity brought down season after season to limit the effectiveness of the turbocharged machines. The Imola circuit was notorious for being hard on fuel consumption and the 1985 race was no different. Ayrton Senna took the pole and was looking set for victory until running out of fuel four laps from the finish. Nelson Piquet and Derek Warwick also ran out of fuel in the closing laps. Alain Prost crossed the line to take the win but also ran out of fuel on the slowing-down lap. After post-race scrutinizing, it was found to be underweight and subsequently disqualified, with race victory handed to Elio de Angelis.

13. Who won the season opening Brazilian Grand Prix?

From Quiz 1983 Formula One Season

Answer: Nelson Piquet

Held in the sweltering Rio de Janeiro heat at the Jacarapagua circuit, it was the turbo BMW of Nelson Piquet that managed to hold itself together and head home a bunch of Ford DFVs to the flag. Keke Rosberg had originally finished second in a Williams-Ford, but was later disqualified for a push start. Niki Lauda finished third in a McLaren-Ford, but was not promoted to second. Potential championship challengers Alain Prost and Rene Arnoux both finished outside the points.

14. For what reason did Nelson Piquet suffer severe pain in his right foot during the Canadian Grand Prix?

From Quiz 1984 Formula One

Answer: Oil cooler located in the front nose

Brabham installed an oil cooler directly in front of the pedals, so it generated great amounts of heat in a already hot weathered race. Piquet started feeling heat early in the race, and was screaming with pain, but he kept on going to win the race. He was on the podium with one boot off to cool down that foot.

15. Nika Lauda made his return to racing at McLaren after his shock retirement in 1979. How many races did it take for him to win?

From Quiz 1982 Formula One Season

Answer: 3

Starting second on the grid, it was just like old times for Lauda at the Long Beach Grand Prix, as he pressured Andrea de Cesaris into a mistake to take the lead, and pulled a gap out over Keke Rosberg to take his 18th career win and first for McLaren. He would also win the British Grand Prix later in the year at Brands Hatch.

16. Which famous former championship winning team made its return to Grand Prix in 1989 after missing the 1988 season?

From Quiz Formula One 1989

Answer: Brabham

After being sold by Bernie Ecclestone at the end of 1987, certain team assets were acquired by a Swiss financier, Joachim Luthi, and the team re-appeared on the grid. However, Luthi was jailed by season's end for massive tax fraud and the team was sold to the Middlebridge Company.

17. In the 1989 Hungarian G.P., Nigel Mansell overtook Ayrton Senna in a bold move and won the race. Which driver blocked Senna, and allowed Mansell to nip through?

From Quiz 1980s Formula 1 [2]

Answer: Stefan Johansson

When Senna and Mansell, who were running 1 and 2 came up to Johansson driving the Onyx Ford, Stefan hesitated for a split second, and momentarily boxed in Senna. Mansell was following Senna closely, didn't slow and zipped through. It was a fabulous move, and Senna had to content himself with second place.

18. In what Grand-Prix was Riccardo Patrese struck in the rear while stalled on the dummy grid?

From Quiz 1980s Formula 1 [1]

Answer: Belgian Grand Prix (Zolder)

Incredibly, it was his own teammate that crashed into him! Patrese stalled on the grid, then Stohr, driving the sister car rear ended the other Arrows.

19. Which two drivers were disqualified from the 1982 Brazilian Grand Prix, for having underweight cars?

From Quiz Formula One in the 1980s

Answer: Nelson Piquet and Keke Rosberg

Piquet and Rosberg finished 1-2, but were disqualified for being under weight, handing the victory to Alain Prost.

20. Which Formula Atlantic driver was called upon to replace Nigel Mansell at Lotus, after the Englishman injured his wrist in a crash at Canada?

From Quiz Formula 1 Season 1982

Answer: Roberto Moreno

Colin Chapman took a punt on the un-prepared 23 year old Brazilian for the seat at Zandvoort. It took a while for Moreno to recover his reputation after he failed to qualify.

21. Michele Alboreto took the lead in the drivers championship after the fifth round with a victory at which Grand Prix?

From Quiz 1985 Grand Prix Season

Answer: Canadian

Michele Alboreto entered the 1985 season one of the preseason favourites for the Championship, and repaid that faith with three second place finishes in the first four races. At the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, he piloted the number 27 Ferrari, made famous by legendary Canadian Gilles Villeneuve, to victory at the circuit named after him. New teammate Stefan Johansson made it a great day for the Prancing Horse by taking second place.

22. John Watson and Niki Lauda finished first and second in the Long Beach Grand Prix. Where did they start on the grid?

From Quiz 1983 Formula One Season

Answer: 22nd and 23rd

John Watson secured his fifth and final Formula One victory after a stunning drive from 22nd on the grid to lead home his team-mate in a quite remarkable McLaren-Ford 1-2. The McLarens had suffered tremendously during qualifying, and were somewhat lucky to qualify, with only the Osella cars proving to be hugely uncompetitive. In a tremendously exciting race, Rosberg was causing all sorts of excitement and havoc up front, while quietly the two McLaren-Fords were picking their way through the field and picking up places as everyone fell by the wayside. Amazingly, by lap 45, the McLarens were past the leading car of Jacques Laffite, and Watson pulled away from the cramping Lauda to take victory. It was the farthest in modern Formula One a driver had ever come to win a race, a record which stood into the 21st century.

23. Who took pole at the Long Beach Grand Prix?

From Quiz 1981 Formula One Season

Answer: Riccardo Patrese

Patrese stunned the field by taking pole by just .01 seconds from Alan Jones. It was the first pole position of his career and the only one Arrows would ever take in over 20 years in Formula One. Patrese also led for the first 25 laps and performed admirably in front of the two Williams-Fords, but an engine misfire caused his retirement on lap 33. However, Patrese's disappointment in Long Beach was somewhat made better by two tremendous podiums in Brazil and Imola.

24. Why was the British Grand-Prix red flagged on lap 11 in 1984?

From Quiz 1984 Formula One

Answer: Palmer's accident at Clearways

Jonathan Palmer's RAM suffered steering breakage, and had a massive accident, but the doctor was unhurt.

25. Politics were still rife in 1982, and the San Marino Grand Prix saw how many cars turn up to compete?

From Quiz 1982 Formula One Season

Answer: 14

The political battles between FISA, the sports governing body, and FOCA, the Constructors Association, came to boiling point just before San Marino. Primarily, the boycott was about the disqualification of two cars at the Brazilian Grand Prix, but there was also underlying tension regarding safety and the ever more powerful turbochargers. As such, most FOCA-aligned teams boycotted, with only Tyrrell, ATS, Osella and Toleman joining Ferrari, Renault and Alfa Romeo. Despite the lack of cars, the Renaults and Ferraris managed to put on a real treat, but it was events between the Ferraris in the latter stages that led to the death at the next Grand Prix of Gilles Villeneuve.

26. At the Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez, Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell shared the closest finish in grand prix history. Who finished third?

From Quiz Formula One 1986

Answer: Alain Prost

Senna and Mansell were in a class of their own at Jerez, while as usual there were plenty of retirements. Alain Prost did his usual trick of surviving the carnage to finish third, with teammate Rosberg fourth.

27. In the 1982 season, Keke Rosberg became world champion. How many races did he win that year?

From Quiz 1980s Formula 1 [2]

Answer: 1

Incredibly, he won the crown with just one race, the Swiss G.P. at Dijon. He managed to be world champ by being consistent in the races, almost always racking up points. 1982 was one of the blackest Formula 1 season in history. Two deaths (Gilles Villeneuve and Paletti), 11 different race winners, and a drivers' strike at the beginning of the year.

28. Who was on pole-position for the 1982 Long Beach Grand Prix?

From Quiz 1980s Formula 1 [1]

Answer: Andrea De Cesaris

He planted the very competitive Alfa Romeo 182 on pole. It was the only time this happened, but De Cesaris had a good 1982 season, driving well. He almost won at Monaco, but ran out of fuel on the last lap while in the lead!

29. Mario Andretti drove for two teams in 1982. What teams were they?

From Quiz Formula One in the 1980s

Answer: Williams and Ferrari

He drove a Williams in Long Beach, replacing the retired Carlos Reutemann, and for Ferrari in the last two races at Monza and Las Vegas.
