The hosts defeated Argentina in a thrilling final that ended 4-2. Brazil went out of the Group Stage, in which only the winners of the four groups went through; they finished Group 2 with 2 points, having defeated Bolivia 4-0, but after losing 2-1 to Yugoslavia, who finished with 4 points, as they also beat Bolivia 4-0 to qualify for the semi-finals. Italy, like many European teams, chose not to enter due to the difficulty of travelling to South America.

Hector Castro finished the tournament with 2 goals (1 in the final and 1 in the 1-0 Group Stage victory over Peru). There was some dispute as to whether Bert Patenaude scored a hat-trick or not on July 17th in a 3-0 Group Stage win over Paraguay (some sources credited one of the goals as an own goal by Aurelio Gonzalez). Patenaude's milestone was officially recognised by FIFA as the first hat-trick in World Cup history on 10th November 2006, 76 years later, when Florie's goal was re-attributed to Patenaude. FIFA cited 'evidence from various historians and football fans, as well as lengthy research and confirmation from the US Soccer Federation.
