2. The 1901 season saw the new American League join forces with the National League to become what was known as Major League Baseball. How many American League teams were there in 1901?

From Quiz 1900s in a Bucket

Answer: 8

There were eight teams in both leagues in 1901. The new American League consisted of (in order of finish in 1901) the Chicago White Sox, Boston Americans, Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, Washington Senators, Cleveland Blues, and Milwaukee Brewers.

3. 1901 saw the emergence of the new American League with eight teams. A Philadelphia Athletics second baseman won the Triple Crown by hitting .426, hit 14 home runs and had 125 RBIs. Who was this future Hall of Famer?

From Quiz Decades on the Diamond: 1900s

Answer: Nap Lajoie

Lajoie played for five seasons with the National League Philadelphia Phillies before joining the Athletics across town. He retired with a .338 average after leading the AL in batting five times. The hall took Napoleon "Poli" Lajoie in 1937.

4. Which was the first American League team to lose more than 100 games in a season?

From Quiz Decade in a Box: 1900s

Answer: Washington Senators

The others were all National League teams but did not exist in the 1900s decade. Washington lost 113 games in 1904 which was the most losses in the decade. Three of the Senators pitchers lost more than 22 games in 1904. The Senators did not see the arrival of pitching great Walter Johnson until 1907.

5. In 1902, this former National League Cleveland Spider star pitcher won over 30 games in the season for his fifth and final time in his great career. Who was this Boston American pitcher?

From Quiz Decades on the Diamond: 1900s

Answer: Cy Young

Young had just come off winning the pitching Triple Crown in 1901, and still had his stuff in 1902 by going 32-11. Young was inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame in 1937.

6. 1903 saw the birth of a future Hall of Fame player. This player hit 493 home runs, set a consecutive game playing streak, and was forced to retire due to a disease. Which player was it?

From Quiz Decade in a Box: 1900s

Answer: Lou Gehrig

The others were all born in the 1940s. Gehrig, nicknamed 'The Iron Horse', was born on June 19th. His Major League debut came in 1923 with the New York Yankees. Lou played for 17 seasons before retiring in 1939, then died in 1941. His Hall of Fame induction came in 1939.

7. 1902 saw the Pirates win their second consecutive National League title. Pitcher Jack Chesbro led the league with 28 wins, and third baseman Tommy Leach led the league with home runs. How many did Leach hit?

From Quiz An Infancy Decade of Baseball

Answer: 6

The early days did not show a lot of power in the home run department. Leach's six in 1902 would be one short of his career high of seven. Unknown to everyone in 1902, seven-year old George Herman Ruth was on the way.

8. In which year in the decade did the American League begin?

From Quiz Decade in a Box: 1900s

Answer: 1901

The new American League began in 1901 with eight teams. The first AL pennant went to the Chicago White Sox by winning 83 games.

9. The most National League home runs in a season during the decade was accomplished by Sam Crawford of the Cincinnati Reds. How many did he hit?

From Quiz Decade in a Box: 1900s

Answer: 16

Crawford was in his third season with the Reds in 1901 when he set this decade mark for the National League. Socks Seybold of the Philadelphia Athletics in the AL also hit 16 in 1902.

10. Fans saw two pitching Triple Crowns thrown in 1905, one in each league. Christy Mathewson of the Giants threw one in the National League. Which other pitcher threw it in the American League?

From Quiz 1900s in a Bucket

Answer: Rube Waddell

Waddell was a Philadelphia Athletic in his 10th season of baseball. Rube went 27-10 with a 1.48 ERA. Mathewson of the Giants went 31-9 with 1.28 ERA. Both teams met each other in the World Series, with the Giants winning four games to one.

11. In the first year of the new American League, which hitter took it by storm for batting .426 in the season?

From Quiz Decade in a Box: 1900s

Answer: Nap Lajoie

Lajoie was in his sixth season in 1901 with the new Philadelphia Athletics. He came from across the tracks with the Philadelphia Phillies of the National League. His .426 in 1901 was one part of a Triple Crown that he hit, and was a Major League record that stood throughout the entire century.

12. A pitching record was set in 1906 and survived for over 100 seasons. Which New York Giant pitcher struck out seven batters in a two-inning span?

From Quiz 1900s in a Bucket

Answer: Hooks Wiltse

In a game against the Cincinnati Reds, Wiltse struck out the side in the third inning, but an error by the catcher allowed one of the strikeout victims to reach first base safely. He then struck out the fourth batter. In the fourth inning, he once again struck out the side. The Giants won the game 4-1, with Hooks striking out 12 Reds.

13. In 1907, which American League slugger led the league for the fourth straight season in home runs?

From Quiz 1900s in a Bucket

Answer: Harry Davis

Davis was a Philadelphia Athletic, and led the AL in home runs from 1904-1907. He hit 10, 8, 12, and 8, respectively.

14. The 1908 season saw a pitcher win 40 games in a season, the last 40-game winner of the 20th century, and possibly in baseball. Who was this White Sox pitcher?

From Quiz 1900s in a Bucket

Answer: Ed Walsh

There were only two 40-game winners in the 20th century. Jack Chesbro of the New York Highlanders (later Yankees) went 41-12 in 1904, then Walsh of the White Sox going 40-15 in 1908. The White Sox would still finish the season in third place. The only other pitcher that came close to the 40-win mark was New York Giant Christy Mathewson in 1908 with his 37-11 record. These three pitchers would later be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

15. A historical double-play combination was found in the National League in the decade. It was phrased as, "Tinker to Evers to Chance". Which team became famous for these infielders, and appeared in three consecutive World Series in the decade?

From Quiz Decade in a Box: 1900s

Answer: Chicago Cubs

The other teams never saw a World Series in the decade, and the Browns would wait until 1944 to experience their first invitation. The Cubs infield consisted of Frank Chance at first, Johnny Evers at second, Joe Tinker at third, and Harry Steinfeldt at third base. The Cubs went to the promised land from 1906-1908, winning the latter two against the Detroit Tigers.

16. This player in May 1909 stole second, third, and home, all with the same batter standing at the plate in the same at-bat. He would do this again the following day. Who is this Hall of Famer?

From Quiz 1900s in a Bucket

Answer: Honus Wagner

Although Cobb of the Tigers batted for the second American League Triple Crown (Lajoie 1901) and was a base-stealing wonder, it was Pittsburgh Pirate Honus Wagner who pulled off the streaking feat. Honus did it three times during his career. Cobb would never duplicate the event. Cobb retired with 897 stolen bases, while Wagner stole 723. Ironically, both teams met each other in the 1909 World Series, with the Pirates winning four games to three.

17. Which National League pitcher led all pitchers in the decade by losing 29 games in a season?

From Quiz Decade in a Box: 1900s

Answer: Vic Willis

The other pitchers did not begin their careers for many more decades later. Vic Willis of the 1905 National League Boston Beaneaters (later Braves) went 12-29 to help Boston to a seventh place finish. His 29 losses in the season was the most that any pitcher had lost in the entire century. Willis was still a 1995 Hall of Fame inductee.
