In early January, in a conversation with Greenlee, David told her he consulted with a colleague named Dr. Clayton regarding her surgery. Greenlee's surgery proved to be a success.

There were five remaining original cast members that had been on since day one: Mary Fickett (Ruth Martin), Frances Heflin (Mona Kane), Susan Lucci (Erica Kane), Ray MacDonnell (Joe Martin), and Ruth Warrick (Phoebe Wallingford). There was a primetime special to commemorate the show's 20th anniversary that featured interviews with all five original cast members.

Zach Grayson's dead body was turned up and a whodunit was launched, by "AMC", as to who killed him. There were many people that wanted to kill Zach since he drugged Nina and got her into his bed and then had Cliff's sister, Linda, snap photos of this to send to Cliff. He even tried to sell the photos to Cliff so Daisy attempted to sleep with Zach in order to get the pictures. Zach also took pictures of Cynthia Preston in order to blackmail her. Daisy was convicted, of Zach's murder, and sent to prison. It turned out that Marian was Zach's killer since Donna recalled being at Zach's apartment, the night of the murder, and she saw a pocketbook that had a "W" on it. However, the "W" was upside down and it actually had an "M" on it. Donna realized that the pocketbook was Marian's. Marian was sent to prison, for killing Zach, but "did a favor" for the warden and got out early.

The entire town of Pine Valley was devastated when sweet and innocent Jenny Gardner died when her jet ski exploded, while she rode it, during the summer of 1984. Immediately after her death, a woman named Sheila came to town and she looked exactly like Jenny. Greg met up with Sheila and, since he was still grieving for Jenny, he asked Sheila to marry him.

Ray planned to set off a bomb at the Martin's home, on New Year's Day of 1983, and he hid out in the cellar to activate the bomb. Greg went down to the cellar and saw Ray there. Greg notified Ray that Jenny was in the house and Ray decided to take the bomb and run out of the house to prevent possibly killing his own daughter. Despite all of Ray's despicable acts, his one redeeming quality was his love for daughter Jenny.

Erica decided to close the disco and she tried her luck at acting, modeling, and the cosmetics business. It was the cosmetics industry where Erica found the most success. Her most successful accomplishment, in cosmetics, was founding her own company called Enchantment.

Anne was in denial, over this fact, and wanted Dr. Karras to stop treating her daughter. Robin Strasser originated the role of Dr. Christina Karras.

In one episode, Ruth gave a long but serious speech opposing the war and, due to this speech, the actress who played Ruth, Mary Fickett, won a Daytime Emmy. Fickett was the first soap opera actor/actress to win a Daytime Emmy.

From December of 2006 to March of 2007, there was a killer in Pine Valley known as "The Satin Slayer." He ended up killing Erin Lavery and Simone Torres. He attacked Danielle Frye but she survived and went to Hawaii to recuperate. In April of 2009, Alexander Cambias, Sr. (who was The Satin Slayer) revealed that he did not kill Dixie Cooney (it was believed he did). Babe was attacked by The Satin Slayer right after Danielle but it was in February, not January (Like Danielle, Babe survived).

Ethan and Simone had dated for many months (Ethan started to date Simone after he broke up with Kendall) but it was in January of 2006 when he proposed to Simone. Simone accepted and they planned on getting married later on that year. Ethan died the next month as a result of an explosion at the Mardi Gras Ball.

Phoebe, an original character and portrayed by Ruth Warrick, appeared at the hospital on the show's 35th anniversary episode (broadcast on January 5th, 2006), in which the hospital celebrated Dr. Joe Martin's 35 years of being on staff at the hospital. Warrick had poor health for the past several years and made very few appearances. Warrick died on January 15th, 2005 due to complications from pneumonia. She was 89 years old.
