After seeing a vision of his mother in the hydrotherapy room, he had another of his father ascending Jude's 'stairway to heaven' claiming that he would always love him. This was moments before newlyweds Leo and Teresa entered the building. While the two of them ran off to explore the asylum, Johnny closed himself into a room at the end of a hallway. The two followed behind, hoping to investigate a freaky event. When Leo stuck his hand into a slot in the door, however, Johnny pulled out a machete, cutting off the arm and leaving Leo to bleed out.

In 1967, at the Walker household, it's nighttime. Kit pulls a bloody axe from a body on the floor. Sitting down, he hears his daughter calling from the next room. He says he'll be there in a minute. Weeks earlier, Kit, Grace, and Alma lived as normal a life as they could get. Kit decided to marry both of them and live in a polygamist relationship while raising both babies. Grace, believing the aliens to be figures of good, spends her time drawing her abductors, at least what she can remember of them; Alma tries to forget. When Kit gets home, Alma suggests that perhaps the pictures are a bit much for Thomas and Julie.

Sitting in Dr. Oliver Thredson's old house, Johnny smokes before answering a knock at the door; his guest has arrived. When he opens it, it's Pandora, a woman he hired to spend the night. Pandora had a baby three weeks earlier. When Johnny pays her, she understands what he wants; she's been saving up all day. Sitting on the couch with her, Johnny asks about what happens if she hears her baby crying. She says she finds herself unable to contain herself and needs to breastfeed her child. She'll take care of him, and mother him, but he doesn't need to cry to be her baby. He says he'd kill for it.

In his lab, Dr. Arden pounds on Kit's chest in an attempt to revive him from their potentially-fatal experiment (done in an attempt to make the alien visitors reappear at Briarcliff). Moments before it's too late, Kit awakens with a sharp inhalation. When he asks Dr. Arden if their results proved fruitful, Arden lies; there were no visitors, he says. This is a lie. When Kit was knocked out, Grace and Pepper reappeared, the former with a pregnant belly and the latter with the ability to refine her speech. He sets them up, at Pepper's request, with a room in the asylum-- his lab-- before returning to Kit. When Arden revisits Grace he attempts to learn more about this miracle baby but Pepper warns him that any attempts to use science to explain the event will be for naught; x-rays won't work and they won't let him perform a c-section. Pepper, now condescending, says that Arden will not be allowed to interfere at the risk of his own madness.

In 2012, a man by the name of Johnny visits a psychiatrist renowned for beating addiction and combating compulsion. He wants to stop his impulses. As their conversation breaks down, he reveals that he lived with a foster family, started doing bad things at a young age, and skinned small animals. He hasn't done that since he was a teenager though. Now, he skins people. He says that he discovered his real parents when he was in prison. Now he's not sure how to stop the thoughts in his mind; in fact, he recently killed Teresa in his father's old basement. He made a mess since he didn't have his father's expertise. He asks if it's wise to go to medical school at his age. After all, he has to live up to his father-- he's this era's Bloody Face.

In the present day, 911 receives an emergency call directing them to Briarcliff Manor. When the cops arrive, they find the three fake Bloody Face killers strung up from the ceiling in front of the main stairwell. A woman arrives at the asylum with her daughter to speak to Sister Jude. Apparently, there's something 'odd' about her daughter who, on many occasions, has seemed more like an adult than her other two children. She's never cried once. She tells Sister Jude about Jenny and her friend Josie. One day, when they went out to the woods, Josie was found with a pair of scissors in her chest. Jenny told her mother and the police that a tall man in a brown jacket did it. Her mother thought to this day that her daughter was responsible, especially since she found a lock of Josie's hair in her daughter's pocket. Sister Jude claims that she's always dreamed of having a children's ward, but until then she can do nothing to help.

In the present day, Teresa backs into a room and watches Leo get stabbed by Bloody Face through the slot in the door. As she backs against the wall, Bloody Face breaks in and knocks her back before he's tackled by none other than Leo, who wrestles him to the ground and stabs him with his knife. Teresa takes over, stabbing the killer repeatedly before grabbing the phone and helping Leo to his feet. She starts to call 911 and gets through, but not before notice Bloody Face down the hall...and another right behind. The one in the back pulls out a gun, shoots Leo in the head, and fires a few shots into Teresa's chest. Both men take off their Bloody Face masks and note that things may have gone too far. The Bloody Face stabbed in the other room was a friend of theirs. When one of them notices Leo's missing arm, they see a fourth Bloody Face coming in from behind.

Four months later, a film crew arrives at the apartment of Lana Winters and her partner, Marion. A reporter asks Lana about the pictures on her wall and her illustrious career as a reporter, journalist, and ten-time bestselling author before Marion comes in with a glass of wine for everyone. Marion departs shortly after-- she has rehearsal. She reminds Lana that they have a dinner with the Sondheims that evening. Immediately after, the crew finishes setting up their equipment. They raise the lights as per Lana's request. Since this is a Kennedy Center Honor, the interviewer, April, says that she'll ask a wide array of questions beginning with the infamous Bloodyface Saga. Lana refuses outright; Bloodyface is a household name now and he was an evil man. Nothing more to say. They decide to start with the Briarcliff exposé.

Heading to bed, Alma speaks to Kit about Grace, specifically her fascination with the aliens. Alma thinks that she's dwelling on the past because she's unhappy in the presence, so she sends Kit to her to make her feel better. While in bed with Kit, Grace says that she's making the pictures for their kids. She's not afraid of the aliens; she's more afraid of the night she lost control of herself and killed her family. Kit tells her she's a different person now. That evening, a bright light illuminates the Walker household and fire is thrown through their window. Alma is worried that it's the visitors, but it's actually unaccepting locals trying to force out their family unit.

Kit's cell in solitary opens and Dr. Thredson appears in the doorway to retrieve him. It's time to visit with his and Grace's baby boy. Thredson says that if there's anything he can hold dear it's a child's reception of love and affection. When Kit heads to the common room, Pepper is fending off the other inmates while Grace coddles the baby close to her chest. Kit heads near and Grace tells him that she wants to name the baby Thomas after her grandfather; he agrees. When Pepper calls out Dr. Thredson on his evil scheming, Thredson sends her off to hydrotherapy and takes the other inmates to a group therapy session elsewhere to give the new parents time to talk.

The Monsignor is wheeled into the office bedroom by Sister Mary Eunice having survived his ordeal with the Psycho Santa, Leigh Emerson, who, after crucifying the Monsignor, escaped Briarcliff and is at large. Mary Eunice says that the Monsignor is not to blame for his faith and attempts to make him comfortable in his temporary lodgings. What she doesn't know is that he spoke to the Archangel of Death, Shacnath, who told him that his time had not yet come-- he had more work to do, casting the devil from his favourite, young nun. He would guard his thoughts with the rosary. Sister Mary Eunice leaves to receive a delivery. The delivery in question turns out to be a jukebox for the common room; Jude knows it's being done to taunt her. Mary Eunice outwardly informs the other inmates that the responsibility lies with Patient G-2573, Judy Martin. She immediately dedicates "I've Put a Spell on You" to the new resident.

In the common room of Briarcliff, Sister Mary Eunice announces that Christmas has returned; Sister Jude banned it after the previous year. She has all of the inmates line up and, since they don't have ornaments for their tree (Jude destroyed them), she has them give up their personal belongings-- dentures, prescriptions, etc.-- for decoration. Each inmate is also forced to give up a lock of hair, a sacrifice to Christmas spirit. Dr. Arden enters the room but promptly leaves, choosing not to deal with it. In Arden's lab, Frank worries about the consequences of shooting and killing Grace in the bakery. He vows he'll find a way to make things right and tells Arden that they should bring the police into the picture so that he can face his consequences and make things right.

In the asylum's kitchen, an inmate, Miles, has trouble with the schizophrenic voices in his head. Watching a nun use an automatic slicer he gets an idea. He offers to look at the machine before placing his wrists on the spinning blade. When Mary Eunice comes downstairs to find the doctors bandaging Miles' wrists to stop the bleeding she sees three ancient symbols on the wall spelling out a name in Aramaic. Noticeably worried, she asks Miles how he knows the name on the wall; he says he can't even read it so he could never know it. Mary Eunice asks that the wall be scrubbed immediately as Miles is brought upstairs to his cell. Miles wakes up to find the dark figure standing over his bed having been summoned; she's there to help him. He pulls out the stitches in his wrist as she comes in and gives him a kiss, ending his pain.

Lana awakens in a bed with pictures of herself and Wendy surrounding her; the sizzle of breakfast can be heard nearby. When realizes, however, that she's still in Dr. Thredson's sterile basement as he makes her a croque-monsieur, she sits up and screams. He says that no one will hear her. When she asks about Wendy, he says he hid her body where it could never be found. It wouldn't matter to have her reappear when Kit Walker is awaiting his death sentence in prison. He brings her some food, what he calls the perfect 'mommy snack', and sits next to her on the bed to say he never had a mother; she abandoned him when he was young and he spent his childhood in an orphanage where his basic needs were met, but he never received a mother's love or affection. Lana says that she knows how it feels to be abandoned-- it's how she felt at Briarcliff. He says he knows that he was right about her.

From Quiz "I Am Anne Frank" (Part II)

Answer: Charlotte

'Anne' wakes up strapped to the bed and Sister Jude is in her room. Anne insists that Dr. Arden is Dr. Gruber and that they should investigate his lab while he's in the hospital for the gunshot wound to his leg. Jude says that she needs to fess up since he'll be back soon, maybe with the police. She could end up on his operating table. Anne tells Jude to look, but she already did; she didn't find anything, even in the closet where she allegedly found Shelley. Sister Mary Eunice comes by to inform Jude that a man is in her office looking for his wife. The man turns out to be the husband of the woman claiming to be Anne Frank. He produces a picture; it turns out her name is Charlotte and she has a son, David. He blames her possible psychotic break on her high-strung personality and the stress of her new baby.

Sister Mary Eunice brings Sister Jude the manor's mail and says that a big storm is on the way. When Sister Jude opens a newspaper in the pile of mail, she sees an article from 1949 about the girl she hit with her car. The girl had gone missing. Dr. Arden works in his lab investigating the chip taken from Kit's neck. When he breaks it into pieces, it reconnects into its original form magnetically, right before his eyes. In the kitchen, Sister Jude prepares dough and takes out her stress as Dr. Thredson comes in. She blames her stress on the weather and Dr. Thredson asks her to stop using corporal punishment. She says that she is compassionate-- she asked another institution for their movie projector as a way to entertain the inmates during the upcoming storm. Dr. Thredson asks for the autopsy report of the possessed boy and Sister Jude seems delusional. She accuses him of planting the newspaper and when he claims not to know what she means she doesn't respond.

The inmates of the womens' ward are pulled from their cells for a room search (which Sister Jude says enforces honesty). When they check Lana's room, they find notes in her pillowcase; she still plans on writing the story and exposing Jude and the asylum for what it is. When Sister Jude takes the notes, Lana says she'll commit it to her memory. Sister Jude proceeds to Dr. Arden's office with a proposition. She feels that Lana's memories are what are forcing her to oppose treatment, so she asks Dr. Arden to perform electroshock therapy. Dr. Arden is (ahem) shocked by Sister Jude's claim that electroshock therapy can be just another tool to rid inmates of sin. When Dr. Arden and his assistants strap Lana into her stretcher, he has Sister Jude hold one of the instruments against Lana's head and he turns the dial.

The year is 1964. Kit Walker works at a local gas station and closes up as his workday comes to an end. As he prepares to leave, the lights and radio flicker out. Frightened, he rushes into the station to find his gun but runs into some of the local guys instead. He takes his gun back from them as they urge him to come along and scare another guy. When he resists, they allude to his new 'maid', leaving Kit uneasy. When Kit gets home, he greets Mrs. Walker, his new wife, who also happens to be African-American. As it turns out, he's been keeping their recent marriage a secret for fear that they would be persecuted or attacked.

Lana's story began at Briarcliff in 1971. Bringing her two man crew into the death chute, she planned on putting America into the asylum to bring it down. April says that she was put into such high esteem for her actions and Lana can't argue that she perpetuated the myth about herself. She did it out of ambition. And she had a hook, for sure. The point, she tells April, was to locate Judy Martin, who was committed there after she ran the institution. What she found, however, was more. Panning through the halls of the building, Lana and her crew documented the worsened conditions of Briarcliff, even talking to an orderly about the lacking quality of care. Lana tells April that she imagined asking to see Sister Jude in her cell. Arriving, she found her mad, and grateful, even remembering the playful 'Lana Banana' name. But that never happened. When Lana reached the room she discovered that Jude was no longer at Briarcliff. Lana takes a five minute break from filming and asks for a sparkling water. A crew member hands her one; the crew member is Johnny.

Kit returns to the common room to find Lana and the two of them sit down for a chat. Lana says that Thredson escaped and Kit says he knows-- Thredson promptly walks into the room and sits across from them. While Lana contemplates bashing Thredson's face with a thick ashtray, he reveals to Kit that the abortion Lana attempted to perform on herself failed; the baby's still in there and it's the only thing keeping her alive. Kit's still wanted but Thredson won't turn him in because of the taped confession, so they're at a stalemate. Thredson, however, has been offered a full-time position at Briarcliff by Mary Eunice who, after untying him from his slipknots, is allowing him to recommence Kit's treatment. That evening, Sister Mary Eunice performs a cell search in the womens' ward, much like Jude used to do at random. When she approaches Lana's cell, Lana chastises her for letting Thredson back into the building considering he's a murderer. Lana is sent to the hydrotherapy room for a twenty-minute boiling. When Mary Eunice enters Judy's cell she comes back out with a cucumber, much like Judy found in Shelley's cell weeks before. When Judy tells her to do her worst, Mary Euncie takes it upon herself to follow her wishes. Judy's taken to the electroshock therapy room, strapped in, and zapped at full power (despite Arden's instruction to bring the power to a maximum of 50%).

The police investigate what actually happened on the night Jude returned. Speaking to Leigh (now recovered), Dr. Arden, the Monsignor, Sister Mary Eunice, and others, they all agree that perhaps Jude has finally snapped due to the stress of running the institution. They blame Jude for Frank's murder. When the investigators ask Leigh if he was ever found responsible for the murders of eighteen people, he says that he had time to reflect and he believes that he should take responsibility. He now believes that there are eighteen people in heaven and he can forgive Sister Jude. He wants redemption. The Monsignor hears all of this. Jude is stripped of her clerical standing and will be forced to live out her days in Briarcliff.

The figure, an archangel by the name of Shachath, is interrupted by someone entering the room-- Sister Mary Eunice-- who is able to see her. Mary Eunice asks her to leave since she came for the soul she was asked to take. Shachath realizes that the being inside of this once-gentle nun is a fallen angel, a dark cousin, and she knows that the once-pure girl inside is begging to get out. Mary Eunice urges her to leave but Shachath claims that they'll meet again. Grace awakens in her bed to find Dr. Arden standing over her. He says that she has a bad infection because of the botched hysterectomy he never performed. To make things right, he has to clean her up. In the basement lair of Dr. Thredson's house, Lana loses hope. Dr. Thredson's sexual attacks bring her to the point where she can see the archangel, Shachath, watching from the shadows.

From Quiz "I Am Anne Frank" (Part I)

In the common room of the ward, the new girl writes on a piece of paper. Lana sees this and recommends not writing; if the guards catch her she'll head to solitary. When Dr. Arden walks in, the girl is shocked. She claims that he was there, in Auschwitz, as a Nazi. She asks if he remembers her and says that her name is Anne Frank. When Sister Jude questions the girl in her office, Jude says that the consensus is that Anne Frank died in a concentration camp. 'Anne' says that this is a lie; she survived the extermination and survived as a pickpocket in Germany. She met an American soldier, married him, and headed to New Jersey. When he died, her journal was published and she decided never to reveal herself to the public as they needed the face of a deceased Anne Frank to make meaning. Jude says the story is indecent, but Anne says that's hypocritical since she has a Nazi war criminal working at Briarcliff.

Heading into the common room, Sister Mary Eunice turns off the record player and makes an announcement. With the big, bad storm coming, half of the inmates will be petrified and the other half will be chaotic, so they're having a movie night. One of the inmates shakes in fear as she believes that Sister Mary Eunice is now Satan. Kit and Grace discuss another possible escape on the movie night. When Lana comes in, Dr. Arden requests Kit's presence. Sister Mary Eunice rushes into Sister Jude's office with a decanter of wine from the chapel and she says that someone has been imbibing. When she requests that Sister Jude try some to see if it's been tampered with, she remembers that she no longer drinks after swearing it off in 1949. Instead, she drinks it herself and indulges in the taste. It is then that Sister Jude notices that Siter Mary Eunice is wearing red lipstick-- Ravish Me Red. She claims that it's actually from Dr. Arden...and it's for Sister Jude. Dr. Arden ties Kit up on the operating table and reintroduces him to the metal spider from his neck. Dr. Arden fears counter-intelligence from enemy spies and decides to use his instruments search for more inside out of fear of surveillance.

Kit heads to the common room to speak with a court-appointed psychologist by the name of Dr. Oliver Thredson. While he gives benefit of the doubt to Kit in the beginning, he wraps up his report on the subject with the decision that he's manipulative and, foremost, suffering from acute clinical insanity. Kit ends up remembering that when 'they' took Alma, she was still alive. In the forest, Sister Mary Eunice is approached by Dr. Arden while she carries a tattered basket away from where she left it. She says that whatever's out in the forest seems to be getting angrier. As thanks, Dr. Arden brings her a gift, a candy apple, and asks her to take a bite ("life is too short for regrets"). Although she originally believes that sweets lead to sin, she decides to take a bite. Shelly watches them return from the woods from one of the asylum windows.

Returning to the house, Kit tells Alma, his wife, that he wants to tell people the truth; they went to Provincetown and got married without their knowing. Alma assures him that the world will change one day before they head to the bedroom. Soon, Alma heads to the kitchen to take the roast out of the oven while Kit stays in bed. When electrical feedback cuts out the radio, Kit sees a bright light outside. He gets a shotgun and checks to see if the guys are outside, but he's surprised instead by more bright lights and an ear-piercing, inhuman noise. When he rushes inside to save Alma, he's lifted to the ceiling by an invisible force and dropped again. All he remembers is finding himself in a bright light, face-to-face with an otherworldly creature.

In the 1970s, Lana (and her crew) stopped by Kit's house for a talk. Having shut down Briarcliff she wanted to film their reunion and ask a few questions about a certain Betty Drake. Lana located papers in the Briarcliff administrator's office (formerly the office of Sister Jude and the Monsignor) describing Betty Drake, a woman released into the care of Kit Walker a few months after they spoke with one another at her book signing for "Maniac" a few years earlier. Kit admitted to it. Unable to lead everyone out of Briarcliff, he committed to being with her. After Alma died, he started visiting Jude weekly because she never belonged there. There was still life in her. There weren't many questions; he was, for the most part, allowed to bring her along. After everything, he brought her home-- he said he did it for the kids. He had to leave Briarcliff behind by finding someone or something to forgive.

In 1968, Jude plays Candy Land with Pepper and others in the common room. When the Monsignor comes in, he asks for a word with her. She says that she doesn't refer to herself as Jude; Jude is dead. Her name is Betty Drake and she's the Queen of Candy Land. The Monsignor is leaving Briarcliff since he's been appointed Cardinal of New York. The church has donated Briarcliff to the State, relinquishing all patients to their care. It will be used as an overflow facility for troubled inmates. He tells Jude that she will be released; he'll make sure of it. He can't have her locked up there any more because it weighs too heavily on his conscience. She says that false hope is the cruelest thing of all. This is the last time they speak.

Lana is met by Mother Claudia, Jude's Mother Superior, in the kitchen of Briarcliff. Claudia tells Lana that Jude has told her everything and they can start to make things right by getting her out of this horrible place. Claudia hands over her patient file; it's irrefutable proof that she spent as long as she did in the asylum. Her clothes and personal effects are in the lavatory next door. Mother Superior wishes her luck; she also suggests that Lana get this place torn to the ground and the earth salted. Before making her escape, Lana opens a nearby drawer and tears into a bag of flour to reveal the confession tape she and Kit recorded. It goes with her, she says.

While checking over the Monsignor's wounds, Sister Mary Eunice gets more than she bargains for when he places a crucifix on her head and attempts to exorcise the demon inside. This proves fruitless as she breaks away and tosses him away with her telekinetic powers. She hops on top of him in an attempt to seduce him. His vow to the Lord and his chastity is less than enough to protect him from Sister Mary Eunice, who can't escape. Mary Eunice turns to find Dr. Arden in the doorway, watching. Judy returns to the common room in a complete daze; Lana tells Kit that they must've turned up the juice for her, yet she doesn't feel better about it. That's when Judy lolls her head around to see the jukebox. Shuffling over, she begins to hit it and tug at the cords while Kit and Lana watch on.
