1. How are Iris and Liz able to afford refurbishments to the Hotel Cortez?

With all the previous owners of the Hotel Cortez dead, Liz and Iris take control of the hotel, renovating and managing to bring it back to success. It doesn't work as planned. Receiving new customers, the duo recognizes that they're likely to be advisers from TripAdventurers.com and Iris brings them up to a refurbished, lavishly-outfitted suite. When she leaves, however, Sally appears before the couple, lamenting the lingering pain of those in the hotel and stabbing one of the customers in the chest with a syringe, causing him to overdose immediately. The other customer runs into the hall where she comes upon Will Drake who, admitting he's new to the murder game, stabs her in the neck. Liz and Iris decide they need to have a meeting.

Liz loads guns in Iris' bedroom as her partner in crime walks in to say that The Countess has returned to her penthouse upset. Fortunately, that's their time to strike. They plan to go in, guns blazing, and make sure that once The Countess is down, that she stays down. They get several shots off, striking Elizabeth multiple times, but Donovan blocks a number of them himself. Iris is distracted by her son's sacrifice, allowing The Countess to escape, and they're forced to get Donovan out of the hotel or, else, he'll be trapped there like her other lovers. They carry him down the elevator and through the lobby to the street where he dies in his mother's arms.

Liz muses about the types of people that still use faded, old hotels as he checks people in at the reception desk of the Hotel Cortez. One couple, recently checked in, is an elderly pair; they claim that they're in the city for their sixtieth wedding anniversary. Unfortunately, the wife has cancer, and rather than let it spread and live without one another, they decided to kill themselves in their hotel room. Liz and Iris head in to clean up the mess and Liz is distraught since she so recently lost Tristan. It's only a matter of time, she claims, before The Countess kills her too. Iris stops the trigger from being pulled. After all, if Liz dies in the hotel, she'll be trapped there for eternity. Besides, she wants to make things right with her son. Iris says that when all the loose ends are tied up, they'll die together.

The Countess wonders about her life over the past century and contemplates the events that brought her to such a point of vulnerability. The sealed-off wing remains open and what she believed-- that Valentino and Rambova had disappeared without her-- was wrong. Additionally, Will Drake plans to make changes to the lobby of the Hotel Cortez to accommodate what will surely be a lavish wedding ceremony. Will wants excess, but Elizabeth wants quiet intimacy. Fortunately, she's easily able to convince him to change his mind. At the front desk, The Countess asks Liz to have flowers delivered by Wednesday and assures him that Tristan never knew how to love. Liz, fed up with what his boss has done, refuses outright.

Unfortunately, Liz doesn't allow him to take his anger out any further, and Sally comes by to stop John from making any bad decisions. Sally offers to tell him the truth; Liz offers him a gun.

In 1926, The Countess steps out of her cab and walks up to the front door of what would later be known as the Los Angeles Murder House. Dr. Montgomery is still the owner at this time. Elizabeth is there because she's pregnant, sporting a large baby bump...but it's only been three weeks. The doctor brings her downstairs to the basement, into his chambers, and while his nurse is initially worried due to her low body temperature, the procedure continues on. The baby is removed, but it's still alive; it kills the nurse immediately. When Elizabeth awakens, she comes face to face with her baby boy.

It's Devil's Night, and a Mr. Ramirez checks into the Hotel Cortez; it's his third year in a row. That night, he enters his room through the window and two people are sleeping in the bed. That's the point though. He bashes the head of the male occupant in with a lamp and his wife awakens, screaming. He tells her to swear on Satan that she'll stop, but she doesn't, so he goes for her neck. She's able to escape into the hallway, but Mr. March holds her aside for his guest. Det. Lowe receives a call to his hotel room from his daughter, Scarlett, who's staying at her grandmother's for Halloween. During the call, Lowe realizes that blood is leaking...in pretty large amounts...from the corner of his ceiling.

Tristan finds himself on the 7th Floor to find James March's room; music spins on a record player when he arrives. Tristan, having decided that he wants to kill people, has sought out March's company to learn from the greatest serial killer of the times. March is enthused, feeling that Tristan has found his calling, and relishes in knowing that his traps, hidden throughout the hotel, will be put to good use. Of course, that's the moment that Will Drake arrives on the floor with Claudia, the two discussing the possibilities for this abandoned part of the hotel, and they plan to pull it out, demolishing it completely, to construct his atelier. While the spirits of Mr. March and Miss Evers fear the possibility, Tristan vows to keep it safe. Will tells Tristan that, despite his rapid healing, he'll still call the police to haul him out of the hotel next time he shows his face.

Sally, in one of the rooms of the Hotel Cortez, sews Gabriel into the mattress of a bed. While she told him he'd be free if he listened to her, she lied; he can't cheat death. She kisses him and pushes him into the bed as a scream is heard through the vents; one of the Swedish tourists is crying for help downstairs-- children are feeding off her arms. Iris knows the girl will stop screaming eventually...and she does, but only when she's dead. Elizabeth Taylor wheels the girl into the laundry cupboard and dumps her into the chute...with the other bodies down there. In the childrens' secret room, Iris takes their blood and fills it into a carafe to pass off to The Countess. Donovan refuses to see his mother, only emerging when she leaves, and the two indulge in their drinks. The Countess wants to go out to an art show to hunt; since Donovan wants to stay in, she goes alone.

Two Swedish tourists pull up to the Hotel Cortez in Los Angeles and, almost immediately, know that something is wrong. Checking in at the front desk they are told that, despite their wishes, they can not be granted a refund; they're convinced to stay one night to make use of their deposit. Both are led to their rooms and are not-so-regrettably informed that the building is a dead-zone for cellular signals. There is, however, an ice machine down the hall so that they can mix drinks. One of the girls heads out to pick up ice, only to face some eerie occurrences en route-- a maid cleans what looks like blood off a bedsheet; young children creepily follow her through the halls; a metal-clad hand reaches for her from behind. When she returns to he room, her companion has lit candles; something smells off. It's not until they pull back the bedsheets that they find the source of the odour...someone's sewed something into the mattress...and when they tear it apart, whatever's inside is still alive.

Liz and Iris are able to pull a number of the ghosts together to the bar for a meeting and it's clear that there's a fair bit of unrest. Nonetheless, they make their case that they wish to make the Hotel Cortez something special and will do their best to accommodate the living and the dead. As it turns out, Sally and Will are the only people who've been murdering in the hotel as of late, and even James March says that they need to make a practical change to keep afloat or, else, face their makers. March says that they should hold out until the year 2026, the hotel's centennial, to be designated a historical landmark...they just need to get there. Sally continues to refuse, even if March can make her do what he wants.

In the basement of the Hotel Cortez, next to the pile of bodies at the bottom of the laundry chute, Sally hastily tears bullets from The Countess' gunshot wounds and stitches her up. When Elizabeth regains consciousness, Sally is still working with a needle and thread, lecturing her about the knick to her femoral artery. When she asks why Sally would help her, she's told that Sally needs her still, and she's made to promise that she won't leave her alone in the Hotel Cortez.

Liz asks Miss Evers to do the deed for him, getting her to call her son on the phone, thirty-one years since he left his family. While Liz is convinced that this is the right thing to do, Miss Evers, more a woman of her time, insists that it's very likely a bad idea considering the person Liz is now. Nonetheless, because she ended up making the call on his behalf, she owes her a treat. Liz reveals it to be a bottle of new bleach detergent. In Mr. March's safe, John Lowe looks over his penultimate trophy-- the Commandment that 'Thou shall have no other gods', for which he's claimed ears of three victims in a back-room shrine to an illegitimate god. Sally watches from over his shoulder and claims that he needs one more trophy to be free.

While the news on TV reports of corpses appearing exsanguinated throughout the city, The Countess receives a phone call from a private investigator; he's found Valentino at a motel. She heads over directly, embracing her past lover in an instant. That night, Elizabeth lets Donovan return to her penthouse suite for the night and he implores that she take him back monogamously. She swears that she will uphold monogamy and trust him, but she can't have anything out of line. First she has to get married on Wednesday, then she needs to become a widow on Thursday. Then, they'll make a list.

Sally brings John upstairs to Room 64 and tells him that there are answers on the other side of the door. When he walks in, however, the room is empty. It used to be James March's office. Sally gives John the details; March died in the room at 2:25 in the morning, the same time at which people are typically killed in the same spot, or else subject to horrible visions. She advises John to look behind the armoire as she closes the door, and it's there they find his safe. Inside are pieces of each of the Ten Commandment victims-- hands, eyes, brains...-- with two empty jars. John wonders how the killer got in, but Sally says that the killer had a key the whole time. That's when John realizes...he's taken up the mantle, and he's always been the killed.

Det. Lowe wakes up to find Holden in his bed and soon races through the hallways of the Hotel Cortez to search for him, quickly stumbling on the pool and the coffins therein. To his shock, his wife sleeps in one of them. Elsewhere, Liz Taylor spends the night with Tristan, the two enjoying each others' company in bed. Liz hands over a stack of classic literature and insists that he read them; he never read either until he moved out to the Hotel Cortez. Tristan claims that he genuinely loves Liz, and she reciprocates. Liz, however, knows that it won't end well since she pulled him away from The Countess.

Donovan brings his mother to the lavish abode of Ramona Royale at four in the morning and reveals that he has an inside man for the task she wants to accomplish-- his mother. Iris, managing the Cortez, has all the opportunity to bring The Countess down from within. Ramona criticizes Donovan for recklessly endangering his mother and infecting her with the virus. She fears that The Countess will know as soon as she sees her, but the others seem to think she'll be invisible. At the hospital, Det. Lowe discovers that her blood worked wonders; Max is perfectly fine after what appeared to be total respiratory failure. The boy is discharged.

Miss Hazel Evers, washing bedsheets in the bathtub of a room in the Hotel, fears that she can't remove the blood from it. She thinks back to 1925 when she took her son out to trick or treat for Halloween...when her boy was abducted. Det. Lowe knocks on the door to the room to find her distraught and, soon, they both discover that they have their disappearances in common. She invites him in for sherry but, since he doesn't drink, he just pours her one and joins for a chat. She explains that the killer took him to a ranch outside the city, locking him into a chicken coop until he was killed. She never found out what really happened to him...but the bones were placed into a mass grave. She tells John that the two of them are kindred spirits...but she can't speak too much more since her master's autumnal banquet is coming up.

The Swedish customers are very frightened, of course, but are told that, until the police arrive to take their statement, they'll need to remain in the hotel. In the meantime, they're led to Room 64, which is never rented out...and they're left there for hours. One of the girls falls asleep in the bed, only to be woken up by the radio at 2:25. When she wakes up she searches for her companion, only to find her on the floor in the bathroom. The two children from in the hallways of the hotel are eating her.

Iris brings Sally a bottle of champagne and speaks to her frankly, apologizing for killing her years before. Iris knows she hasn't been the same since John left and Sally says that she'll never be alone if she can pull people under with her to make her feel any ounce of pain she does. As a gift, Iris gives Sally a phone (and new, complimentary wi-fi) and encourages her to get out of 1994. Soon, Sally becomes internet-famous...and lets go of her past habits, tossing her heroin out the window. Being lost to the world no longer has its appeal.

The two discuss The Countess and their behind the scenes battle for her affection before Rudolph asks him to leave and brandishes a large sword. Rather than fight, Donovan pulls out a gun and shoots the former film star in the head. Meanwhile, in The Countess' penthouse suite, Elizabeth and Natacha argue over their common lover before Natacha pulls out a knife. Unfortunately for her, The Countess thinks much like Donovan; she pulls out a gun and shoots her rival in the head as well.

A trio of pornographic filmmakers fulfill their reservation at the Hotel Cortez, checking in and getting to work up in one of the rooms. Iris, originally one to allow it to be done in the rooms upstairs, decides that she no longer wants people displaying such a poor attitude in her hotel. She heads upstairs and murders the three of them to drain their blood. Donovan walks in on her cleaning up and congratulates his mother for finally coming into her own. She urges Donovan to leave since The Countess was very much aware of Bartholomew's disappearance and she had to reveal it was Ramona Royale's doing. Both of them remind each other not to let things get too far out of hand.

At the morgue, Detective Hahn watches over Wren's body while John enters. That's when John decides to confess as he believes he's lost his mind. The truth is, John walked into the Hotel Cortez five years earlier, the night he dealt with the carbon monoxide suicide and needed to drink his way out. Back in 2010, he had a few too many drinks, but not before stopping at the hotel bar and getting propositioned by Donovan to join a party upstairs. Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately for John, it wasn't the party he expected.

At the Hotel Cortez, Elizabeth and Iris investigate the corpses in the newly-found hallway. Iris is surprised as it's the first time she's ever seen The Countess exhibit fear. In one of the rooms of the hotel, Marcy unpacks her things having received a free weekend stay from Will Drake (for selling him the hotel). When she gets the door, it's slammed open on her and she's attacked by two hungry individuals-- the same from the hall. They're actually two people who came to the Hotel Cortez in 1925, and one of them was in motion pictures alongside Elizabeth at that time. Elizabeth went into the business because she wanted to become immortal, and when she was invited to dinner with handsome actor Rudolph Valentino, she met Natacha Rambova...his wife. There, Rambova and Valentino both seduced the impressionable girl.

Detective John Lowe arrives at the gruesome scene of a murder. Two lovers are in bed; the woman has been impaled on a pole and her hands have been nailed to the wall. Her partner is alive, underneath her, but his eyes and tongue have been removed and placed in a nearby ashtray. Pictures of the couple sit on the floor next to the bed. Returning to his office, Detective Lowe listens to case files from a month earlier before taking a call from his daughter, Scarlett. It's the time of the night where he reads to her before bed. He holds his other calls. It's not until he's done that he receives a call from the person he missed-- the killer-- and he's told that he's going to kill again in Room 64 of the Hotel Cortez.

On the second day of her self-devised entanglement, Sally commenced her torture; the demon attacked her for another three days before enough was enough. On the fifth day, she tore herself free of her bindings. Unfortunately, the Hotel Cortez was the only place where she never felt abandoned. This brings her to The Countess in the basement, because while she doesn't want to spend eternity with The Countess, she does have the ability to bring John back, somehow. Elizabeth says that she needs blood like hers first, to get stronger, and asks for Donovan to be by her side. Sally informs her that Donovan is dead.

Will and his son get dressed in tuxes for the upcoming wedding and eagerly anticipate the upcoming ceremony, but their father-son moment is interrupted by an angry Miss Evers who insists that Will must certainly be looking to commit suicide; as soon as The Countess puts the ring on his finger, she claims, she will most certainly need to dispose of him by bleeding him dry. Miss Evers was originally supposed to marry Mr. March but he loved her instead. She leaves at Mr. Drake's request, but says that she eagerly awaits the day she's proven right because it'll be the day she steps in to clean the blood from his formalwear.

The Countess takes a key and walks through the halls to Room 33, a room set aside as a darkened nursery. She says she's leaving to Paris to come into a lot of money and promises never to leave again. Ramona Royale and Donovan enter the Hotel Cortez, walking past Iris at the front desk and taking the elevator, knowing full well that Elizabeth is out for the time being. Ramona demands they head to the basement to kill the children, but they aren't aware that they've been relocated. Ramona heads off alone to discover this (alongside Iris) while Donovan heads to the penthouse. Discovering that The Countess' only raison d'etre is her children, she insists that Iris grab the key for Room 33.

In the suburbs, Max murders his parents to drink their blood, then hops on the bus to head to school for Halloween. There, the teacher confiscates his weapon but he shows one of his friends, Madeline, that he's also hiding a kitchen knife in his boot. In a closet, Max kisses Madeline, accidentally biting her lip and drawing blood. To make it up to her, he draws blood on his own lip and resumes the kiss, infecting her as well. Soon, the teacher discovers they're missing and heads to the closet only to find Madeline infected with the measles, writhing on the ground. Things turn from bad to worse; Max closes the door and slits his teacher's throat, telling Madeline to drink the blood to regain her strength.
