House of Cards Trivia Questions

1. Who was it who convinced Francis Urquhart, the central protagonist and anti-hero of the series, to run for leader of the Party?

From Quiz
"House of Cards" BBC Original Series

Answer: His wife

Throughout the trilogy, Elizabeth is the "power behind the throne", orchestrating Francis's rise to power and then accepting all his dalliances, even procuring women for him, to keep him there.

2. The episode begins with Frank discussing his education bill with several teacher unions. What is their first point of contention with the bill?

From Quiz House of Cards 1.3

Answer: Teacher performance standards

The teacher unions strongly disapprove of any bill that has teacher performance standards attached to it but Frank's administration wants them as part of the bill. From the discussions it appears that there will be some compromise on the frequency of evaluation and some leniency for tenured teachers.

3. Every Tuesday morning we see that Frank has a meeting with two influential politicians. What titles do these individuals hold?

From Quiz House of Cards 1.2

Answer: Speaker of the House and House Majority Leader

Frank typically finds these meetings unproductive and the meeting is usually just the other men talking and him listening. While at the dinner they are interrupted by Remy Danton, a former colleague of Frank.

4. The series begins with a loud noise that wakes up the main character, Frank Underwood. What was this sound?

From Quiz 'House of Cards' 1.1

Answer: A dog being hit by a car.

In the beginning all that we really hear is a car slamming its breaks and hitting something. After Frank goes outside we can hear the dog in obvious pain and the driver fleeing the scene. Realizing that the dog was not going to survive Frank does what he believes is necessary.

5. Who is Urquhart's implacable enemy during the second series?

From Quiz "House of Cards" BBC Original Series

Answer: The King

Due to the fact that the title would have given it away, I didn't mention it, but "To play the King" is the second part of the trilogy and does indeed chronicle Urquhart's struggle to bring to heel, and then take on and defeat the newly-crowned young King. The title is probably also a reference to chess.

6. An incident in Frank's home district where a teenage girl died requires Frank's attention. Where does Frank travel to in this episode, the locale of his Congressional district?

From Quiz House of Cards 1.3

Answer: Gaffney, South Carolina

Gaffney is located in the northwestern portion of South Carolina's fifth district. Gaffney is the county seat of Cherokee County. Frank mentions in this episode that he tries to make it down to his district at least once a month.

7. After Frank's Tuesday meeting he has a discussion with Remy. What type of contracts does Remy say SanCorp will lose out on since Frank was not nominated as Secretary of State?

From Quiz House of Cards 1.2

Answer: Natural gas

Remy is a partner at the law firm Glendon Hill and he represents the natural gas company SanCorp. Frank makes a comment that Remy was the best press secretary he ever had. However, he also mentions that Remy chose money over power. Frank had promised Remy that if promoted to Secretary of State SanCorp would receive offshore drilling contracts.

8. In his initial bid for leadership of the Party, how does Urquhart defeat the front runner, Henry Collingridge?

From Quiz "House of Cards" BBC Original Series

Answer: Smears him through his alcoholic brother and forces him to pull out of the race

Although he is only in the first episode, Collingridge already gives us the idea he is a weak man, who probably does not really want the job as leader. When it becomes clear he cannot win, he is content to retire from politics and look after his brother. Urquhart hates his weakness, even his humanity, and is glad to see him go.

9. The opening credits show scenes of Washington D.C. and indicate that the "House of Cards" series is based on a novel. What author created a trilogy of political thrillers including "House of Cards," "To Play the King," and "The Final Cut?"

From Quiz 'House of Cards' 1.1

Answer: Michael Dobbs

The three novels were each adapted into a miniseries on BBC. Interestingly Netflix producers decided to change the last name of the main character from Urquhart to Underwood.

10. Who is the investigative journalist who pursues, falls for and is eventually killed by Urquhart at the end of the first part of the trilogy?

From Quiz "House of Cards" BBC Original Series

Answer: Mattie Storin

Although he is not held responsible for her death (there were only the two of them on the roof garden of the House of Commons when she fell to her death, having been in fact thrown off the roof by Urquhart) it haunts the now-Prime Minister's dreams for the rest of his life, and eventually leads to his having to dispose of more of his colleagues, as his secret threatens to be revealed.

11. Where is Claire running when an old lady scolds her, saying that she has no respect and should not be running there?

12. Part of Frank's power maneuvering involves ousting the Secretary of State nominee Michael Kern. What story does Frank leak to Zoe that contributes to Kern's downward spiral?

From Quiz House of Cards 1.2

Answer: Kern edited a story that called Israel's presence in the Gaza Strip and West Bank an occupation.

When Frank gives Zoe the information in a dark area at nighttime, Zoe makes the comment, "How very deep throat of you." Kern was editor of the Williams College newspaper in 1978 when an article was published that lambasted Israel's policies in the Middle East. When confronted about the story during an interview with George Stephanopoulos, Kern denies having written it but then laughs and says that people change their minds over time.

14. How does Roger O'Neill, Urquhart's erstwhile publicist, die?

From Quiz "House of Cards" BBC Original Series

Answer: Urquhart mixes rat poison into his cocaine

Although she is not directly implicated in his death, we see as Urquhart cuts the cocaine as O'Neill rests at his house a second pair of hands, which can only be those of his wife Elizabeth, happy to aid and abet in murder as long as her husband retains power. Urquhart later tells Mattie sadly, "He had to be put down. It was a kindness." This, of course, just before he kills her.

15. Paying homage to the Reagan years, what new political term does Kern use during his interview that is first mentioned by Frank?

From Quiz House of Cards 1.2

Answer: Trickle-down Diplomacy

While Kern doesn't elaborate on what trickle-down diplomacy would entail, he states that through it numerous dilemmas will be resolved between Israel and Palestine. When Frank hears Kern use the term on air he comments that Chief of Staff Vasquez must have given the line to him to use for the interview.

16. President-elect Walker had promised Frank Underwood a position due to his long service and party loyalty. What position was Frank expecting to be nominated for that would have made him the United States' chief officer for foreign affairs?

From Quiz 'House of Cards' 1.1

Answer: Secretary of State

President-elect Walker ends up deciding not to nominate Underwood in spite of having previously promised him the position. Instead he informs Underwood (through an intermediary) that he prefers for him to stay in the House of Representatives. Obviously Underwood feels slighted by this and seeks to gain influence by any means necessary.

17. Why does Stamper, Urquhart's oldest friend and greatest ally, turn against him in the end?

From Quiz "House of Cards" BBC Original Series

Urquhart thinks he can use everyone, and that someone like Tim Stamper will allow him to kick him and kick him and kick him, and never bite back. 20. As a means at getting back at his party for slighting him, Underwood partners with columnist Zoe Barnes to release certain information. On what political issue did Zoe first disseminate information with the help of Underwood?

From Quiz 'House of Cards' 1.1

Answer: Education

President-elect Walker sought Underwood's help in getting an education bill passed passed shortly after his inauguration. However, he didn't want Underwood's name on the bill and instead tasked Congressman Don Blythe with writing it. Realizing that the draft would never pass if it came up for a vote Underwood puts the draft in his paper shredder and tells Blythe that it needs a lot of reworking. 21. What is the third and final installment of the series called?
