The second series of 'Inside No. 9' was first broadcast on BBC Two in 2015. Series two continues the template established and used so effectively in the first series of having each episode take place in a single location. Each episode is a stand alone story, with different casts, locations and even different genres, with the only thing connecting them being an appearance by one or both of writers Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith, and the fact they all take place behind a door marked with the number nine. In 'La Couchette' the action takes place in a sleeper car on a French train, being shared by a cast of mismatched characters. The episodes showcases Shearsmith and Pemberton's flair for mixing genres as, what appears to be a broad farce takes a dark turn when the inhabitants of the sleeping car make a grizzly discovery. 'La Couchette', like every other episode of 'Inside No. 9' is written by Shearsmith and Pemberton.

Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton have written all episodes of 'Inside No. 9' and played the lead roles in the majority of them. They have also taken a turn at directing some episodes. Shearsmith and Pemberton first rose to fame as part of the hugely successful 'League of Gentlemen' comedy group, who enjoyed considerable success in the late 1990s and early 2000s with their eponymous radio and tv shows. 'League of Gentlemen' was a very dark comedy series which fused often uproarious comedy with horrific and grotesque elements and characters. Following the success of 'League of Gentlemen', Shearsmith and Pemberton worked on the surreal mystery horror comedy series 'Psychoville', which once again, fused the duo's twin loves of horror and comedy to excellent effect. In 2014, the first series of 'Inside No. 9' was broadcast. It is anthology series, inspired by shows such as 'Tales of the Unexpected', with each episode being a self-contained story, usually set in a confined area and connected only by the fact that each takes place behind a door marked with the number nine. Shearsmith and Pemberton have used the anthology set-up to great effect, allowing them to present a completely different story each week, and often in wildly differing genres. While some of the episodes do play with the comic horror which is such a trademark of the duo's work, many other genres such as mystery, kitchen-sink drama, slapstick comedy and musical comedy have formed the setting of various episodes.

The title of the episode is 'Sardines', so that would be a giveaway! 'Sardines' is set at an engagement party in a rich couple's home, and the guests play a game of sardines, hiding in a large wardrobe and in other parts of the room. The wardrobe becomes increasingly claustrophobic as more and more people enter it, including the bride's brother and his boyfriend (played by Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith respectively), Ian (one of the groom's colleagues, played by Tim Key), the groom's boss (Julian Rhind-Tutt) and his girlfriend. It is revealed that the bride's father (Timothy West) had an obsession with making people play sardines, and insists that everyone in the room hides in the wardrobe, including a man known as 'Stinky John' due to his fear of washing. It is also implied that the bride's father sexually abused children, including a boy called Pip. At the end of the episode, it is revealed that 'Ian' is Pip, and he locks the door of the wardrobe, holding a lighter. The 'number 9' in this episode is the number of the mansion where the party is being held.

The first group of hoteliers made their way to the town of Humpty Doo in the Northern Territory of Australia for the first homestay, arriving at Adam and Kathy's $1000/night 'Top End Hideaway' in the woods. The home was purpose-built by the couple, consisting of a main house and two off-shoots, one containing a single master bedroom and one containing three smaller bedrooms, all connected by covered patios. The other four couples liked the place, including the beautiful pool, but disliked some of the questionable construction choices, the bugs, and lack of homey feel. Ultimately, the home was scored 31 out of 50 points and they placed fourth in their grouping.

The other passengers include chatty Kath, played by Julie Hesmondhalgh, and her husband, played by Mark Benton, who are travelling to their daughter's wedding, a comically coarse German called Jorg, played by Pemberton, an Australian backpacker called Shona and Hugo, the posh boy stowayay with whom she has hooked up, played by Jessica Gunning and Jack Whitehall respectively. Julie Hesmondhalgh is a highly respected actress who makes regular appearances on British television and radio. She first came to widespread public attention with her role as Hayley Cropper, the first regular transgender character to appear in the very popular and long-running British soap opera 'Coronation Street'.

Shearsmith and Pemberton had considered other ways of connecting the individual episodes of the series, including having the same postman appearing in each episode, however they considered that this might place constraints on the format and instead settled on having the connection between episodes restricted to taking place a location marked with the number 9. However, the duo decided that each episode should feature an appearance by a common object. The hare is visible in every episode, though it often takes an eagle-eyed viewer to spot it! Finding the hare in each episode of number nine has become a popular challenge for many fans of the show.

Jim hallucinates seeing blood everywhere and fantasies about taking Tony's role for himself, egged on by his fiancée Laura (Lyndsey Marshal). He becomes Macbeth for real after Tony is injured, and later plays the title role in 'Richard III'. Although Laura is set up to be a Lady Macbeth-esque character, it's actually Kirstie (Rosie Cavaliero), Tony's former dresser and now carer, who is the real villain of the episode. She reveals that she spiked Tony's drink, pushed him off the battlements and caused him to be paralysed, got the company manager sacked and stole Laura's engagement ring after she committed suicide. The 'number 9' in this episode is the number of a dressing room in a theatre.

In the second episode of the season, the first group of contestants visited what appeared to be a shed in the Barossa Valley only to discover that Mark and Jannine had constructed a 1950s-themed retro house filled with nostalgic American memorabilia. This house had the second-highest score of the first group because despite its lack of private rooms (two couples had to stay in main rooms), it was, as Adam claimed, a must-see destination for all Australians. At $800/night for a group of eight, it was one of the few destinations of the show to be outside the major cities. Babe and Bondi were the ones to stay in the main bedroom, an ode to Marilyn Monroe.
