Mario Kart 8 Trivia Questions

1. How many playable courses are there in the game?

From Quiz
The World of "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe"

Answer: Forty-eight

Each course has a different hazard for the racers as they drive on during the race. They are divided up into twelve cups: Egg, Star, Mushroom, Triforce, Special, Lightning, Bell, Crossing, Banana, Flower, Leaf, and Shell.

2. When the race is about to begin, Lakitu comes in with the traffic light hanging on a fishing pole. Which number officially starts the countdown to the race?

From Quiz "Mario Kart 8": Race to the Finish Line

Answer: Three

When that number comes up on the screen, that means the first red light will appear. If all of the lights turn green, then it's go time! Lakitu is also a playable character in this game as well.

3. In addition to karts and bikes, you can also ride on which vehicle?

From Quiz "Mario Kart 8" Fever

Answer: ATV

This is the first time that an ATV can be used as a vehicle part in "Mario Kart 8". The vehicle customization feature debuted back in "Mario Kart 7".

4. GCN Baby Park is the shortest course in this game. How many laps does it have?

From Quiz The World of "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe"

Answer: seven

This course is shaped like an oval with each lap taking ten seconds. You can see some rides along the way including a roller coaster.

5. How many stamps can you collect in all during the game?

From Quiz "Mario Kart 8" Fever

Answer: 90

Stamps are special notes that you can use when posting to Miiverse. You'll start with 28 and you can get the rest by winning Grand Prix races and beating a Staff Ghost in Time Trials.

6. The much-loved Gusty Garden Galaxy theme from 'Super Mario Galaxy' features in the theme for which 'Mario Kart 8' track?

From Quiz Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)

Answer: Cloudtop Cruise

Cloudtop Cruise, as its name suggests, takes place on a track in the sky. You will be racing on clouds, vines and an airship as the leitmotif from the 'Super Mario Galaxy' games slips seamlessly into the accompanying music. The style of the music will transition from cheery and brassy to dark and menacing (complete with electric guitar) as players find themselves flying through the air and driving through stormy clouds.

7. The starting grid is made up of how many rows and how many columns?

From Quiz The World of "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe"

Answer: Two by six

Just like in "Mario Kart Wii", twelve racers will take part in each race. The higher you place, the more points you'll get for finishing.

8. What happens when you cross the finish line after all three laps of racing?

From Quiz "Mario Kart 8": Race to the Finish Line

Answer: The race is officially over

When that happens, Lakitu will come in while waving the checkered flag. That means you have finished the entire race. It is a true "Mario Kart" tradition since the series began.

9. Which number DOESN'T belong in the official countdown sequence to begin a race?

From Quiz "Mario Kart 8" Fever

Answer: four

Just like in every 'Mario Kart' game, the race begins when the light on Lakitu's starting signal turns green. When it does, that means GO! Since there's only three lights on the signal, you'll begin racing in three seconds. Make sure you look for it on the game screen.

10. Where is Mount Wario set?

From Quiz Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)

Answer: On an alpine mountain

In what is probably the best new track to appear in 'Mario Kart 8' (the music is just fantastic), you'll start at the very top of Mount Wario and make your way all the way down to the bottom to the finish line. A mountain top, an icy cavern, a dam, an alpine forest, a slalom course and a ski jump are all things you'll be racing on, through, down or off in this three-section track which concludes the Star Cup.

11. How many karts can carry in the starting grid for this game?

From Quiz "Mario Kart 8": Race to the Finish Line

Answer: twelve

This is the second game in the "Mario Kart" series to use this feature. The first was "Mario Kart Wii". The grid is divided up in two rows of six karts. Get ready to start your engines!

12. Joining bikes and karts (the former having last appeared in 'Mario Kart Wii') in 'Mario Kart 8' is which type of vehicle?

From Quiz Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)

Answer: ATV

Just like 'Mario Kart 7', you're able to customise your vehicle prior to racing. You will choose a body (either kart, bike or ATV), a set of wheels (each with its own pros and cons, as Phil Keoghan would say) and a glider. As before, a limited number of these parts will be available when you first start the game, but a new part is unlocked for every 50 coins you collect. Despite being able to drive through underwater sections, your vehicle produces a small propeller rather than becoming an actual boat. Likewise, your glider will deploy when you hit a glider ramp/panel.

13. How many playable characters, including the downloadable ones, are there in all?

From Quiz "Mario Kart 8": Race to the Finish Line

Answer: Thirty-six

Each character has a different weight class ranging from lightest to heaviest. These characters love to race against each other in "Mario Kart 8".

14. The baby version of which character makes his/her debut appearance in 'Mario Kart 8', joining Baby Mario, Luigi, Peach and Daisy?

From Quiz Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)

Answer: Rosalina

After having added Baby Daisy and Baby Peach to the roster in 'Mario Kart Wii', it was only a matter of time before the next baby character arrived. Sure enough, Baby Rosalina makes her first ever appearance in 'Mario Kart 8'. The regular, older Rosalina's first 'Mario Kart' appearance was in 'Mario Kart Wii', after having joined the 'Mario' series in 'Super Mario Galaxy'. Other new characters include Pink Gold Peach and the Koopalings (though, strictly speaking, they aren't new to the 'Mario' series as a whole, merely the 'Mario Kart' games).

15. Mario Kart TV is a brand new feature to this game. Which website can you upload highlights to?

From Quiz "Mario Kart 8" Fever

Answer: YouTube

You can also watch highlights from around the world and of course, you can also watch your very own highlights from previous races. You can do slow motion or watch the entire race by editing.

16. How many courses have a door or gate opening just before the race starts?

From Quiz "Mario Kart 8" Fever

Answer: three

They are Twisted Mansion, Mount Wario, and Bowser's Castle. In Twisted Mansion, the entrance doors open up so the racers can come in to have a three-lap race. In Mount Wario, the helicopter door opens up. The opening animation for Bowser's Castle is the portcullis rising up so racers can enter the castle.

17. How many tracks from 'Mario Kart 64' made a return appearance in the four Retro cups of 'Mario Kart 8'?

From Quiz Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)

Answer: Four

'Mario Kart 64' gets the honour of having the most number of tracks return. The four returning tracks are Toad's Turnpike, Royal Raceway, Yoshi Valley and, of course, Rainbow Road. Most, if not all, of the features of the original tracks have made their way into their remakes. Peach's castle in Royal Raceway is still there but it's now inaccessible thanks to a large gate. The endless traffic of Toad's Turnpike still trundles its way around this figure-8 course but we're able to use some of the vehicles as ramps to jump off. Yoshi's Valley includes all the twists, turns and multiple paths that made it so memorable in the first place and, thanks to the Wii U's superior power, the computer is able to determine what place you are in throughout the entire race. Oh, and that weird giant egg is back too.
