Portal 2 Trivia Questions

1. When Wheatley meets Chell, what word does he want her to say?

From Quiz
Don't Stop Achieving

Answer: Apple

After being awoken from stasis for hundreds of years, Chell meets Wheatley, knocking at the door to her stasis chamber. Wheatley informs Chell that "most test subjects do experience some cognitive deterioration after a few months in suspension", and asks her to say the word 'apple' to make sure her brain is still functioning properly. However, the on-screen prompt to say 'apple' only results in Chell jumping, to Wheatley's displeasure. As a warning siren goes off, Wheatley cuts the conversation short and proceeds to control the chamber and relocate it to a nearby docking station. However, the chamber, and those around it, start to disintegrate as Wheatley tries to steer it between girders and pylons. Bursting through the wall above the docking station, Chell finds herself in the relaxation vault from the beginning of the previous game.

2. "Portal 2" continued where the original game left off. Chell was woken up from stasis a first time (fifteen days after the events of the first game) to test whether her senses were still functional or not. What did the program not ask Chell to do?

From Quiz Portal 2

Answer: Jump out of the window

After initially waking, the player was told to look up, look down, look at a piece of art and listen to some classical music. The player was then told to go to sleep, at which point the screen faded to black. As the player's character woke up for the second time it was clear that a long time had passed. The room was decayed and a British voice behind the door was asking Chell to open the door. If the player did not initially co-operate, the voice tried to communicate in very weak Spanish and he also tried to use reverse psychology on the player. Upon opening the door, it was realized that the voice actually came from a personality core named Wheatley.

3. Where does Chell find the dual portal device?

From Quiz Don't Stop Achieving

Answer: Incinerator room

When Wheatley and Chell locate the circuit breaker room beneath GLaDOS' chamber, he accidentally reactivates the malevolent robot, and she disposes of Chell in the nearby incinerator chute. Fortunately for Chell, she lands on a solid mass (thanks to her long-fall boots). Encouraged by GLaDOS, Chell proceeds to navigate her way through the incinerator room to find the dual portal device underneath a pile of rubble. When she acquires it, GLaDOS informs her that testing is about to begin, for the next sixty years.

4. After escaping the stasis warehouse, retrieving the portal gun, and passing the remains of GLaDOS, Wheatley guided the player to the breaker room. Why did Wheatley and Chell go to the breaker room?

From Quiz Portal 2

Answer: To activate a switch that read "Escape Pod".

Wheatley expressed some initial fear at the prospect of passing through GLaDOS' lair, but upon seeing her inanimate mechanical remains, Wheatley was comfortable with going through there. After making it to the breaker room, Wheatley and the player had to look for a switch that read "Escape Pod". No such switch was to be found. Wheatley, however, did not initially realize that by lifting the elevator in the breaker room he was re-activating almost every single switch. The huge shock came when GLaDOS was re-animated by the activated power.

5. When Wheatley takes over Aperture Laboratories, where does GLaDOS end up?

From Quiz Don't Stop Achieving

Answer: In a potato battery

Overcome with power, Wheatley turns on Chell, saying how she was selfish during their efforts to take over the facility, and that all he did was sacrifice himself while she stood by and did nothing. In his rage, he implants GLaDOS' robotic consciousness into a potato battery and throws both her and Chell down a chute to the very depths of Aperture Laboratories, far beneath the earth. At the bottom, GLaDOS is carried off by a bird (she is a potato, after all), and Chell is left to find a way back up to the facility. On her way, Chell finds herself completing test chambers from years gone by, accompanied by a recorded voice of the late CEO of Aperture Laboratories, the eccentric and enigmatic Cave Johnson.

6. What is Cave Johnson's personal assistant's name?

From Quiz Don't Stop Achieving

Answer: Caroline

Though Caroline is only mentioned a few times by Cave Johnson, and her voice is heard even less, GLaDOS (when she and Chell are reunited and reluctantly work together to take back Aperture Laboratories from Wheatley) is reminded of something from deep within her memory banks. During the course of the game, she begins to remember more and more, until she realises just who Caroline was, or is. Caroline was Cave Johnson's personal assistant, and in his last days, he had Caroline's consciousness implanted into a robotic construction so that she may live on forever and look after the facility. GLaDOS realises that she is Caroline, or at least has part of Caroline in her personality. At the end of the game, GLaDOS deletes Caroline from her memory banks and lets Chell leave Aperture Laboratories, to stop her ruining GLaDOS' precious science facility.

7. What ailment leads to the eventual death of Cave Johnson?

From Quiz Don't Stop Achieving

Answer: Moon dust poisoning

The conversion gel is primarily composed of moon rocks, that were discovered to be a very good conductor of portals. Inspired by this, Cave Johnson himself was heavily involved in the production of the conversion gel, but unfortunately, the exposure to the moon dust proved hazardous to his health, and he contracted a fatal respiratory disease. It was in his dying days that Cave Johnson ordered his employees to build a computer that could hold his consciousness and thereby keep him from dying completely. He died before it was completed, however, and Caroline was instead implanted into the computer.

8. Chapter 9 has what, rather apt, title?

From Quiz Don't Stop Achieving

Answer: The Part Where He Kills You

When Wheatley reveals his 'surprise', Chapter 9 begins. He reveals that this is "the part where I kill you". GLaDOS points out that this is "the part where he kills us". On the screen, the words "Chapter 9: The Part Where He Kills You" appear, and on the first playthrough of the game, the achievement/trophy "The Part Where He Kills You" is awarded. Of course, Chell and GLaDOS don't die, and manage to portal out of harm's way before Wheatley has a chance to realise.

9. Which actor provides the voice for Wheatley?

From Quiz Don't Stop Achieving

Answer: Stephen Merchant

During the initial stages of production, Valve employee Richard Lord lent his voice to Wheatley. In demonstrations for gaming conventions, it was Lord's British voice that was showcased for the character of Wheatley. However, it was British writer and comedian Stephen Merchant (known for his work with Ricky Gervais on 'The Office' and 'Extras' and their record-breaking podcasts) who provided his distinct Bristolian accent for the character. Merchant was not Valve's first choice for Wheatley, however. The company first approached Richard Ayoade (known for playing Maurice Moss in 'The IT Crowd'), but due to scheduling conflicts, he was unable to play the part.

10. What is the name of the first DLC pack for 'Portal 2', released in October 2011?

From Quiz Don't Stop Achieving

Answer: Peer Review

Released for free across all platforms, 'Peer Review' added bonus challenges for the single-player campaign and the cooperative campaign, as well as a new course for cooperative mode, consisting of nine test chambers. The DLC was released on October 4, 2011.

11. After finally letting Chell leave Aperture Science, GLaDOS gave Chell a special gift after she had left the compound. What did GLaDOS give to Chell?

From Quiz Portal 2

Answer: A companion cube

GLaDOS told Chell that the easiest solution to a problem was usually the best. Chell, proved difficult to kill, so GLaDOS decided to let her go instead, as letting her leave was the easier option. As the elevator to the surface rose up, all of the security turrets began singing a song. After exiting the door out into a large wheat field, Chell's special gift was launched out of the door from which she had just exited. It was a companion cube, not just any companion cube, but the same cube that the player had incinerated in the first game. That was evident via the scorch marks and heavy degradation on the cube's outer shell.
