Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How do cockatoos get about?

Answer: They can walk, hop, climb with beak and claws or fly.

Cockatoos are active and playful birds. They can walk (though it's more of a flat-footed waddle) on the flat ground, and will also hop along for fun. They climb trees and fences using beaks and claws and can fly.
2. Horses have four main paces. Which are these in order of speed? Put them slowest to fastest.

Answer: walk, trot, canter, gallop

The walk, trot, canter and gallop are the main paces of horses. Ambling, jogging and pacing are all less recognised paces.
3. Ducks really do put their heads under water and stick their tails up.

Answer: True

Ducks do put their heads under the water. I used to love watching them in the duckpond behind our house when I was a child.
4. Which of the following is not a kind of dog?

Answer: gnu

A basenji is a small dog that doesn't bark, a dingo is the wild dog of Australia and the komondor a Hungarian dog. A gnu is a wildebeest; a kind of antelope.
5. Which is not a recognised breed of cat?

Answer: Tortoiseshell

The Siamese and Burmese are oriental breeds that come in more than one colour. The Rex comes in two varieties - the Cornish and Devon Rex. It is also knows as the poodle cat, because of its crinkly fur. The Tortoiseshell, or tortie is not a breed. It's a colour. Almost all tortoiseshell cats are female.
6. Which of the following fruits is a horse least likely to eat?

Answer: oranges

Most horses like fruit, although you should take out the stones of plums before handing them over. No doubt there is a horse somewhere that eats oranges, but most of them don't like the bitter peel.
7. All healthy dogs enjoy a swim in hot weather.

Answer: False

Most dogs can swim perfectly well if they want to, but some don't want to!
8. Donkeys have cloven feet, like a cow.

Answer: False

Donkeys have feet that are a smaller version of a horse's hoof. It is solid and is actually a huge fused toenail.
9. Which goats have horns and beards?

Answer: Nannies and billies can both have horns and beards.

Both nannies and billies can have both beards and horns, but this doesn't mean all of them have both! It depends on all kinds of things, including breeding.
10. How many teats do cows have?

Answer: Most of them have four, but a few have small extra ones.

Most cows have four teats, but a few are born with extra ones. These are usually tiny and useless, but some can actually produce milk when the cow is grown up. Mostly, these small extras are removed very soon after birth.
