Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. About what percent of a beluga's body weight is blubber?

Answer: 40

The blubber is usually around 10-15 cm thick. Imagine taking the mattress off of your bed, wrapping it around your body, then going swimming, that's what it would be like to be a beluga whale.
2. What fin do belugas not have?

Answer: Dorsal

They have a dorsal ridge on their back instead of a fin. Since they're from the arctic, they use the ridge to break through ice to find a place to breathe. And a dorsal fin would bang on the ice everytime that they swam.
3. What color are belugas when they're born?

Answer: brown/gray

Belugas are born in estuaries...where the river meets the ocean. Those places are very muddy, so their brown color helps them blend in and hide from predators.
4. True or false. Beluga whales have hair on their bodies at some point in their life?

Answer: True

Beluga whales are mammals which means they have to have hair or fur on some part of their body at some point in their life. While they are a fetus and after they are first born, they have some hair on their top lip, also called their rostrum.
5. True or false. Beluga whales have the thickest, most dense fur of the whole animal kingdom?

Answer: False

Sea otters actually do, since they live in very cold climates, they have very dense fur that keeps them warm. In fact their fur is so dense, that their skin never gets wet. It's said that if you put your thumb on a sea otter, there would be more hair under your thumb than on your entire head! Pretty amazing.
6. What nickname do belugas have?

Answer: Canaries of the sea

They are called this because of all the whistlingnoises that they make.
7. Where are beluga whales usually found in the wild?

Answer: Arctic

The furthest south that these whales have been seen is the Delaware River in New Jersey.
8. Trur or false. Beluga whales are Canada's most abundant species of whale?

Answer: True

It may not seem like it since they're all up in the Artic, so you hardly ever see them, but they are actually Canada's most abundant species of whale.
9. Do beluga whales have belly buttons?

Answer: Yes

Belugas do actually have belly buttons, since, like us they're mammals so they have an umbilical cord which they feed from when they're in their mother's womb.
10. True or false. Beluga whale skin was used in the first model of the bulletproof vest.

Answer: True

Beluga whale skin is amazingly tough, and it was indeed in the first prototype for the bulletproof vest.
