Most of the more than 3,500 species of mosquitoes feed on the blood of large mammals such as humans. In 2014 an estimated 700 million people obtained a mosquito-borne illness and more than one million of these individuals died.

Part of their danger to humans is that are aggressive and live in all habitats outside of the rainforest, deserts, and alpine areas. Not surprisingly, the "arietans" part of the puff adder's scientific name means "striking violently".
