Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Inhabiting a group of islands in Alaska, this is the largest brown bear subspecies weighing up to 1,500 pounds.

Answer: Kodiak Bear

The extensive range of the brown bear prompted several subspecies of various sizes to prosper in different regions. The Kodiak bear is believed to have been isolated from other brown bears about 12,000 years ago during the last ice age. Second only to the polar bear in size, the Kodiak bear increases its springtime weight by as much as 30% by autumn.
2. Sharing its name with the fifth largest desert on Earth, this brown bear subspecies was classified as critically endangered in 2016 with only 20 adults remaining in the wild.

Answer: Gobi Bear

Compared to other brown bear subspecies the Gobi bear is very small with males and females weighing about 250 and 150 pounds respectively. Unlike many other brown bear species the Gobi bear does not prey on other large mammals but rather prefers to eat berries, roots, insects, and plants.
3. Possibly inspiring the legend of the Yeti, this brown bear subspecies resides in parts of Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, and Tibet.

Answer: Himalayan Brown Bear

In spite of their wide range, the Himalayan brown bear was classified as critically endangered in 2016. With males reaching a length of up to seven feet they are the largest animals to inhabit the Himalayas. The Himalayan brown bear hibernates from approximately October to April.
4. Also called the silvertip bear, in 1805 Meriwether Lewis and William Clark wrote about this brown bear subspecies that has a bite powerful enough to crush a bowling ball.

Answer: Grizzly Bear

An iconic symbol of the northwestern United States, the grizzly bear's ferocity prompted naturalist George Ord in 1815 to name it Ursus horribilis meaning terrifying bear. Similar to many types of bears, grizzly bears will typically not prey on humans but rather attack when they feel threatened or are protecting their young.
5. The national animal of Finland, this brown bear subspecies has a wide distribution in spite of being hunted extensively in Britain and used in the Roman Colosseum.

Answer: Eurasian Brown Bear

Excessive hunting in Britain eliminated brown bears in the wild in about the year 1000. Eurasian brown bear males on average weigh about 600 pounds whereas females weigh about 450. Popular in many Asian and European cultures, the bear appears on the coat of arms of the cities of Berlin and Bern.
6. The continent of Africa had only one native bear survive into the 1800s. Declared extinct in the 1870s, this brown bear subspecies was last seen in the mountains of northern Morocco.

Answer: Atlas Bear

Sadly the Atlas bear population's decline was in large part due to their use in barbaric games during the Roman Empire. After the decline of the Roman Empire the Atlas bear population reached sustainable levels but the prevalence of powerful firearms available in the late 1800s contributed to their extinction. Similar to a very large grizzly bear, the Atlas bear was said to reach 9 feet long and a weight of 1,000 pounds.
7. Most commonly found on the island of Hokkaido, this brown bear subspecies is called the black grizzly and has spiritual significance for the Ainu people.

Answer: Ussuri Brown Bear

The Ussuri brown bear reaches sizes near that of the Kodiak bear and in addition to Hokkaido there are populations in North and South Korea, Russia, and China. During the first half of the 20th century more than 140 people died from Ussuri bear attacks on Hokkaido alone. Seemingly contradictorily, the Ainu people of Hokkaido worship the bear in a festival called Iomante that involves bear sacrifices.
8. Classified as critically endangered in 2016, this brown bear subspecies weighs up to 440 pounds and primarily lives in Italy's Abruzzo National Park.

Answer: Marsican Brown Bear

With an estimated population of about 50 in 2016, the Marsican brown bear's population was restricted to several protected parks within Italy. Also called the Apennine brown bear several conservation efforts were enacted in the early 2000s to protect their habitats and stop individuals from poisoning and hunting them.
9. This brown bear subspecies weighs up to 1,400 pounds and shares its name with a peninsula that has the Sea of Okhotsk to its west and the Pacific Ocean to its east.

Answer: Kamchatka Brown Bear

In addition to its prevalence on the Kamchatka Peninsula, the Kamchatka brown bear also resides in the Kuril Islands and Alaska's Saint Lawrence Island. Reaching nearly the size of the Kodiak bear, it is typically a darker brown with a tint of violet. In the early 2000s the Russian government allowed hunters to obtain permits seeking out the bear as a way to bring tourists to the area.
10. Native to the Middle East and the Caucasus, this brown bear subspecies is the only known bear to have white claws.

Answer: Syrian Brown Bear

Possibly the lightest colored of all brown bears, the Syrian brown bear is also one of the smaller subspecies. Most commonly found at high altitudes, their population significantly diminished in the 1900s due to poaching and habitat loss.
