Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This beetle searches for feces with its antennae, then shapes it into a nearly perfect round ball and rolls it into its nest for the female to lay eggs into. Which of these is it?

Answer: Dung Beetle

After the eggs hatch inside the dung, the larvae eat the dung, grow up, and the whole cycle starts again. Dung beetles belong to the scarab family of beetles.
2. Which beetle, found mostly in the rain forests of Central and South America, has thick plates on its body and a single horn, or pair of horns, that protrude from its head?

Answer: Hercules Beetle

The Hercules beetle can grow to six inches long including the horns. Some studies suggest that they can lift objects up to 850 times their own weight.
3. Which large beetle shares its name with a character from the Bible?

Answer: Goliath Beetle

The Goliath Beetle is one of the largest scarabs in the world. It can be as heavy as 3.5 ounces. They are found in the tropical rainforests of Africa.
4. Which beetle is considered a pest, attacking deciduous trees, and reducing wood to a powdery dust?

Answer: Powderpost Beetle

Besides destroying old trees, the powderpost or "powder bore" beetle can do damage to buildings. Like termites, they are a wood borer that can destroy wall studs and rafters in old houses that were made with untreated lumber. The larvae feed on the starch in the wood.
5. Which beetle is found all over the world and uses its bioluminescent abdomen to attract mates?

Answer: Firefly

There are more than 2000 species of firefly or "lightning bug". Besides flashing to attract a mate, some species of firefly will flash in the pattern of a female in order to entice rival suitors and eliminate the competition by eating them.
6. Of the beetles listed below, which one usually has a reddish or orange elytra with black or dark brown dots? They are not all female as the name might imply.

Answer: Ladybug

The ladybug is a beneficial insect for gardens and farms. A ladybug can eat up to 5000 plant destroying aphids in its lifetime. The ladybug is considered an omen of good luck in many cultures.
7. If you have heard of the aphrodisiac "Spanish Fly", you should know that it is not made from flies, but a certain kind of beetle. What beetle is ground up to make "Spanish Fly"?

Answer: Blister Beetle

The blister beetle, Lytta vesicatoria, in the family Meloidae, produces a toxic substance called cantharidin. The blister beetle uses the chemical as a defensive mechanism. The substance has never been proven to be an aphrodisiac, but, because of the burning and blistering qualities of cantharidin, it has been proven to be an effective wart remover when used correctly.
8. What beetle is small and round and swims around in ponds in circular patterns using their flat back legs as oars?

Answer: Whirligig Beetle

The whirligig has compound eyes that allow it to see above and below the surface of the water. They are able to trap air bubbles beneath their bodies and submerge, allowing them to breathe under water for up to six hours.
9. What beetle is known as the greatest destroyer of cotton crops in the U.S?

Answer: Boll Weevil

The boll weevil thrives on the buds and flowers of the cotton plant. Pesticides did much to help eradicate the pest, but it wasn't until cotton plants themselves were genetically altered that the beetle became uninterested in eating the plant. A gene was inserted into the cotton plant's DNA and made the plant produce chemicals toxic to the boll weevil.
10. What beetle is named for its affinity for a certain fruit plant, and is known for destroying plants, shrubs and grass by attacking the plant at its base?

Answer: Strawberry Root Weevil

The strawberry root weevil is found in Canada and the northern U.S. They are similar in appearance to the boll weevil. Their larvae feed on roots of plants which can weaken or kill them. They prefer cool to moderate temperatures. During extreme heat, they sometimes enter homes to find shelter and moisture. The adult weevil's wings are fused together, which means they are unable to fly.
