Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Exotic Shorthair was created from which two breeds?

Answer: Persian & British Shorthair

In the UK, the Exotic came by after crosses were made between Persians and British Shorthairs. In the US, it was the Persian and the American Shorthair. Initially it was not intended to create a new breed at all, but to add new blood and improve coats of the shorthairs by adding Persian blood.
2. Which of the following colours is acceptable in the Maine Coon?

Answer: Self Blue

Chocolate, Lilac and Siamese pattern are the only colours not allowed in the Maine Coon. All other colours are acceptable, with the Brown Tabby being particularly popular, giving the cat a natural "wild" look. White markings are very common. Self Blues are quite rare but do exist.
3. Which of the following breed sections does the Devon Rex belong to?

Answer: Foreign

"Foreign" refers to the type of the cat, not where it originated, hence even pure UK breeds exist in the Foreign section at GCCF shows.
4. Which breed has lent part of its name to a pattern in the Persian and Exotic?

Answer: Turkish Van

Bi-colour Persians and Exotics can be VAN patterned; white body with a coloured tail, coloured patches on the head, and sometimes small numbers of small coloured patches on the body.
5. According to the SOP (Standard of Points) all Siamese should have the following:

Answer: Blue eyes

Legend tells of the Siamese with its crossed eyes and kinked tail, but these are faults and any Siamese showing them would be penalised at shows. Siamese come in well over 20 different coloured points, so the face mask is not always Seal in colour.
6. In which breed section does the Selkirk Rex belong?

Answer: British

When the Selkirk was recognised by the GCCF it was decided it mostly resembled the British Shorthair in type, so therefore was added to this section.
7. Which breed is a longhaired Asian?

Answer: Tiffanie

The Tiffanie is the only longhaired Asian. The first Asian breed was the Burmilla, that originated from an accidental cross between a Burmese and a Chinchilla Persian.
8. What is a Balinese?

Answer: A longhaired Siamese

The Balinese is the longhaired variety of the Siamese and belongs in the Siamese breed section. The only difference between the Balinese and the Siamese is that the Balinese has a semi long coat, which is mainly noticeable on the tail and ruff.
9. Which of the following breeds is NOT GCCF recognised?

Answer: Scottish Fold

The GCCF does not recognise the Scottish Fold although it used to. The decision to no longer accept this breed was based on potential health problems that can occur when mating two cats with folded ears together. It is however recognised by many other organisations worldwide.
10. Which of the following breeds does not come in a Tabby pattern?

Answer: Burmese

Burmese are Self and Tortie colours only.
