Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Some dogs are classified as "working" dogs because they are able to assist people in some endeavor. Which of the following types of dog would NOT be likely to fall into this category?

Answer: Pekingese

While the collie, the German shepherd and the Labrador retriever have all at one time or another been considered working dogs, the Pekingese was known as a lapdog. The breed originated in ancient China, and was a favorite of royalty. The Pekingese, along with the Shih Tzu, were both called "lion dogs" due to their appearance.

The Pekingese breed has been around for over 2,000 years, and is just as popular as ever among those who enjoy the company of lapdogs.
2. Which of the following is the closest and best description of a "feral" cat?

Answer: a domestic cat that has returned to the wild or its descendants

Often a cat that has been abandoned will resort to its natural hunting abilities in order to survive, unless someone begins to care for it. Its offspring then are born in the wild and are considered feral, along with its parent.

Cats that are simply abandoned may find a new owner, or they may even stick close to the area that they are familiar with until a new owner comes along.

When domestic cats have kittens in the wild, they are considered feral, although they may be caught and tamed to a great degree by a patient person. Cats are not the only animals that can be considered feral, as pigs, dogs and other once domestic creatures have had to learn to fend for themselves while reverting to wild ways.
3. The dingo is a type of dog related to the grey wolf. On what continent are dingoes found in great numbers?

Answer: Australia

The dingo, or the "wild dog" is found primarily in Australia, but its nearest relatives are members of the canine family of grey wolves. The dingo has had its scientific name changed several times over the years, with a suggestion to refer to it as Canis dingo being presented in a study conducted in 2014.
4. Which domesticated cat with blue, almond-shaped eyes and large ears has a name that means "moon diamond" in its country of origin?

Answer: Siamese

The wichianmat, or Siamese cat, enjoys the company of humans and often lives in pairs or groups. This very social feline was one of the first recognized breeds of Oriental cats. The first one to reach the United States in 1878, a cat named Siam, was presented as a gift to then-President Rutherford B. Hayes by the American consul in Thailand.
5. A domestic dog that was once known as "St. John's Water Dog" is one of the most popular breeds worldwide. They are great with children, the elderly, and as service dogs for disabled people. What breed of dog is this that comes in yellow, chocolate and black versions?

Answer: Labrador retriever

Labrador retrievers originated as a breed in the Newfoundland area of Canada. They are also sometimes referred to as the "lesser Newfoundland".
Labrador retrievers, or "Labs" for short, make excellent sporting and water bird hunting dogs while they also are known for their tremendous patience and easygoing nature. For this reason, they make fantastic pets as well.
6. A genetic defect found in white cats with blue eyes can cause blindness or deafness.

Answer: True

For some reason, there is a higher than normal incidence for white cats with blue eyes to be either blind or deaf. In white cats with different colored eyes, if one eye is blue, deafness may occur on that side of the cat.

Even green-eyed white cats are not immune; sometimes they too can be blind or deaf with a higher frequency than other cats.

White cats are also at a greater risk for skin cancer as they lack the pigments that can block hazardous sun rays, especially around areas in which the hair is thinner like above the eyes or around the ears. It is a good idea to leave them indoors when the sun is out.
7. The smallest breed of dog is the Chihuahua according to most kennel clubs. Toy dogs on wheels that resembled Chihuahuas have been discovered in Mexico by archeologists, dating back to 100 A.D. In what 2 U.S. states were items resembling the Chihuahua found that date back to around 1325 A.D.?

Answer: Georgia and Tennessee

Pottery made in the shape of Chihuahuas was found, dating back to 1325 - 1340 A.D., in Georgia and Tennessee. The pottery may have arrived there when residents of the ancient site of Casa Grandes, Mexico fled after their homeland was sacked and brought to ruin by their enemies. It is possible that they fled northward to what would later become the United States.

Chihuahuas are the smallest breed of dog. Originating in Mexico, these little guys can be as small as six inches tall and can be found in both long-haired and short-haired varieties.
8. The largest species of cats, the tiger, can grow up to 11 feet long. While tigers live in various locations around the world, in which of the following would you most likely find tigers in the wild in the late twentieth century?

Answer: India, Bhutan and China

Tigers can be found in the wild in several places throughout the world. Parts of Asia, including India, Bhutan and Bangladesh, are among some of the remaining habitats of the tiger. At one time they reigned over many other parts of Asia, but encroachment into their habitat has reduced their numbers greatly.

Tigers are an endangered species because of this loss of habitat. They are the world's largest cats, belonging to the genus "Panthera", making them related to lions, panthers, jaguars and leopards.

Successful cross-breeding of tigers and lions have produced ligers and tigons. A liger is the product of a male lion and a female tiger, while tigons are the offspring of a female lion and a male tiger. Ligers are larger than either parent, while tigons are smaller than either of their parents. This is due to the fact that male lions have a gene that promotes growth, while female lions possess a genetic makeup that inhibits growth.
9. What is the difference between a dog that is mixed-bred, cross-bred or purebred?

Answer: both cross breeding and pure breeding are the result of man's intervention; mixed breeding is not

Cross-bred dogs are the result of man's deliberate manipulation of breeds, while many purebred dogs have also similarly been artificially created by man. Mixed-breed dogs (or other animals) are the result of the animal's own selection process for a mate.
10. The lynx is a medium-sized wild cat that roams across several continents. There are four species of lynx found throughout the world; the Canada lynx, the American bobcat, the Iberian lynx and the Eurasian lynx. Which of the following descriptions best fits the lynx?

Answer: short tail, black tufts of hair on their ears and long whiskers

Lynx also have padded paws that assist them in walking across snow-covered terrain, although the warmer the climate the darker their coat becomes.

The hunting of lynx is illegal in many countries of the world because many of the species are critically endangered. Laws protecting the remaining members of the Lynx family may help to ensure that future generations of people will be able to enjoy seeing them too.
