Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Reaching nearly three feet in length with legs outstretched, which species of frog is considered to be the world's largest?

Answer: Goliath

Goliath frogs start out as tadpoles but they keep growing and can reach the size of a cat. With legs outstretched, these large amphibians can reach almost three feet in length. Their natural habitat is West Africa, specifically Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea. Goliath frogs are often found in and around waterfalls and fast-flowing rivers. Their diet consists of worms and insects.
2. Small enough to fit on your fingernail, which frog is the world's smallest?

Answer: Monte Iberia Eleuth

The Monte Iberia Eleuth does not start out as a tadpole. Instead it breeds by direct development, thus avoiding the tadpole stage. It's easily identified by two yellow stripes on its back. Growing to a grand size of 1/2 inch, these petite frogs are found in the fertile mountains of Cuba.

Its name comes from the mountain range in which it was first discovered in 1996. These frogs require a lot of humidity to survive and are often found in areas of poorly drained soil. Much like other frogs, they feed on insects, spiders and moths.
3. Living comfortably in the rain forests of Central and South America, these tiny frogs have a transparent skin over their abdomens. What are they called?

Answer: Glass

Since some species of glass frogs have this transparency, if you turn one over you can see its organs. These frogs are nocturnal, arboreal creatures and breed on the vegetation which overhangs streams. Eggs are deposited on the surface of the water until the tadpoles are ready to drop into the streams.
4. Which species of frog, native to South America, have eyes on top of their head as well as muscular hind legs and slender, fully-webbed toes?

Answer: Paradox

Due to their muscular legs and fully webbed feet, the aquatic paradox frogs are well-adapted to their environment. Tadpoles reach an enormous size, sometimes over 9 inches long, but as adults they shrink down to 2.5 inches. Thus, the adult frogs are dwarfed by their babies, which might explain why this species is so named.
5. These frogs are diurnal, terrestrial inhabitants of tropical forests in Central and South America. They are also poisonous. By what name are they known?

Answer: Poison

This species of frog have poisonous toxins in the skin glands but some frogs of this species are more toxic than others. Poison frogs also possess a pair of plate-like scutes(bony shields)on the upper surface of each toe and fingertip. The less toxic species are not as colorful as the highly toxic ones which are easily spotted by the colorations of bright green, blue, red, or gold.

The more toxic species also have darker spots and stripes.
6. A certain species of frog lives in South Africa and can be found in and along fast-flowing mountain streams. The adults have glandular folds behind the eyes and no webbing between the fingers. By what name is this species known?

Answer: Ghost

Ghost frogs have toes that are nearly fully-webbed while the tips of the fingers and toes are expanded. Breeding males are slightly smaller than the females and have loose folds of skin and horny spines on various surfaces of the body. The tadpoles are especially adapted to live in torrential streams due to their large sucker-like mouths and well-developed legs.
7. This species of frog is unusual in that the frogs possess hard snouts which they use to burrow headfirst into the ground. Found in the humid, subterranean Sahara desert of Africa, name this unusual frog.

Answer: Shovel-Nosed

The mating process of this species is quite interesting. The male calls from the ground then adheres to the female while she burrows into a subterranean incubation chamber, usually found near a pond. The female lays her eggs while the male burrows out of the chamber to leave the female with the eggs. Once the eggs are hatched, she carries the tadpoles out of the chamber to water.
8. Of all the species of frogs, this one has the most unusual type of parenting. Native to the humid temperate forests of South America, name this species.

Answer: Mouth-Brooding

This is how the mating process unfolds:the female lays about 20 eggs on land while the male attends each egg clutch. It takes about 20 days for the eggs to hatch. The male picks up the tadpoles in his mouth and places them in the water where they develop.

In Darwin's frog, the tadpoles move into the male's vocal pouch where they remain for 50 days at which time they are ready to emerge into the world.
9. Easily identified by their bright red color, which narrow-mouthed species of frog can only be found on the northeastern coast of Madagascar?

Answer: Tomato

It is the female of this species that is bright red. The male tomato frog is typically orange or brownish-orange in color. This is one species where the female outsizes the male. Female tomato frogs can grow up to 4 inches while the males grow to 2½ inches. Tomato frogs like a warmer climate, as in the area of Madagascar where they live, and are usually found around ponds close to farms or towns. Loss of habitat and pollution have contributed to the dwindling numbers of this species.
10. This frog species happens to be the state amphibian of Georgia and Louisiana. Found mostly in the southern regions of the U.S., name this frog.

Answer: American Green Tree

The shades of green in the green tree frog range from olive to lime, depending on temperature or lighting. Females lay up to 400 eggs in shallow water during mating season which falls between April and August. These cute little frogs eat food that is readily accessible such as worms, crickets, house flies and moths. Because these frogs don't require much to survive, they make great pets.
