Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What would you use a surcingle for?

Answer: Holding a rug in place or attaching reins to for lungeing

2. The fetlock is:

Answer: A joint on the leg of a horse

I know it refers to the hair at the back of the joint too but technically the joint is the fetlock joint.
3. What is a hackamore?

Answer: A bitless bridle

The hackamore is a bridle without a bit but is actually quite severe as it works by putting pressure on the horse's nose rather than the bars of its mouth.
4. What is the frog?

Answer: Part of the foot of a horse

The frog is the soft spongy part on the underside of the hoof - diamond shaped usually. It is very sensitive.
5. Where would you find the dock on a horse?

Answer: The tail

This is the top part of the tail from which the hairs grow.
6. Where would you find the stifle on a horse?

Answer: The legs

This is part of the hind legs, found at the top of the legs
7. The tolt is:

Answer: A gait

This is a pace only performed by Icelandic ponies - it is somewhere between a trot and a canter. They can keep tolting for miles and it is said to be very comfortable to ride
8. What is a rig?

Answer: An apparently gelded horse who still behaves like a stallion

Sometimes when stallions are gelded they still retain some tissue which produces testosterone, and so they continue to behave like a stallion. The condition can also result from undescended (hidden)testicles which continue to produce hormones. The stallion appears to be gelded but isn't.
9. What is a numnah?

Answer: A cloth or pad put under the saddle

10. What is a Waterford?

Answer: A type of bit

This is a very useful bit if you have a horse which leans or pulls. It is made up of short links and is very flexible so the horse cannot get a hold of it. It is also quite a mild bit.
