Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Between 1930 and 1980 three species of tiger were officially declared extinct.

Answer: True

The first to go was the Bali tiger, native to the Indonesian island of Bali last seen in 1937. Thirty-three years later, in 1970, the Caspian tiger (once found in Turkey, China, Iran and Central Asia) was declared extinct and was followed nine years later by the Javan tiger, native to the Indonesian island of Java.

Of the remaining tiger species, the South China and Sumatran Tigers are listed as 'critically endangered' while the Siberian, Indochinese, Malayan and Bengal Tigers are listed as 'endangered'.
2. In which year did the Kenai Peninsula wolf become extinct?

Answer: 1925

The extinction of the Kenai Peninsula wolf is believed to have been caused by excessive hunting as well as the use of strychnine, a highly toxic crystalline alkaloid used as a pesticide.

Wolf sightings on the Peninsula were confirmed in the 1960s but it's unclear if they were descendants of the Kenai Wolf or a different species.
3. Which type of animal is the extinct Saint Croix racer?

Answer: Snake

Native to the Virgin Islands, the Saint Croix racer belonged to the largest snake family, the Colubridae. It was declared extinct in 1994.
4. One of Australia's unique animals became extinct in the mid 1930s. Which one?

Answer: thylacine

Also known as the Tasmanian tiger, the thylacine was almost completely extinct by 1930. In 1933 a live one was caught and sent to the Hobart Zoo where it lived until its death in September 1936.
5. In which country did the golden toad once live?

Answer: Costa Rica

The last sighting of this small, bright yellow toad occurred on May 15th, 1989. Their extinction is believed to have been caused by climate change.
6. Once common throughout France and Spain, the last specimen of which animal was found dead beside a fallen tree in January 2000?

Answer: Pyrenean ibex

Hunting and the introduction of exotic diseases led to the extinction of the Pyrenean ibex. The last one, a female, died beside a fallen tree on January 6th, 2000.

The Walia Ibex is listed as 'endangered' while the Nubian Ibex is listed as 'vulnerable'. The listing for the Alpine Ibex is 'Least Concern'.
7. Which semi-aquatic mammal vanished from rivers in Japan in 2012?

Answer: otter

The last official sighting of the Japanese river otter occurred in 1979. It was declared extinct in 2012 despite scientists having no idea what actually caused the extinction.
8. The introduction of guns and motor vehicles were among the factors which led to the extinction of the Arabian ostrich.

Answer: True

Ostrich hunting became a popular pastime for the rich and famous, and road traffic also contributed to many deaths. The last Arabian ostrich died in 1966.
9. Which little bird once lived in enormous flocks throughout North America?

Answer: passenger pigeon

Hunting and habitat loss resulted in the extinction of the passenger pigeon. On September 1st, 1914, Martha, the world's last known passenger pigeon, died at the Cincinnati Zoo.

Oriental pratincoles, belted kingfishers and cinnamon hummingbirds are all listed as of 'Least Concern'.
10. Which of the following things is believed to have caused the extinction of the western black rhinoceros?

Answer: Hunting

The most distinguishing feature of the rhinoceros is the large horn on the nose. Unfortunately, this is what makes them a target for human hunters, with no less than 300 of these animals being killed every year. The western black rhinoceros was officially declared extinct in 2011.
