Question 1 of 10
1. Hybrid "Parrot" and "Flowerhorn" cichlids have raised an outcry as "frankenfish," yet some older hybrids of species are widely accepted. Of several familiar aquarium fishes, the only one definitely *not* a hybrid is? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. That white gravel you just bought will raise the alkalinity of your water. You tested it in a saucer by covering some with vinegar, and it produced bubbles of what? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. During a long summer heat wave, you lower the water level in your Corydoras tank an inch every few days, until the water is only three inches deep. The temperature climbs to 80 degrees. Then, when the heat breaks, you quickly top up the tank with cool (70 degree) distilled water. Sound like a good way to get them to spawn?

Question 4 of 10
4. Dense populations of cichlid fishes and severe competition for territory in rocky areas of Lake Malawi have created evolutionary pressure in favor of which of these? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Do you have fish eggs in the aquarium, or are they snail eggs? The eggs are on plant leaves. You're pretty sure they're snail eggs. Why? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Two general characteristics of species of fish that habitually school: they show minimal intraspecific aggression and little sexual dimorphism.

Question 7 of 10
7. Whether you call it Nandopsis cyanoguttatum or Herichthys cyanoguttatum, the Texas Cichlid or Rio Grande Cichlid is the only cichlid native to the U.S.

Question 8 of 10
8. If your aquarium is recreating a small stream in undisturbed Amazonian rainforest, it would be *least* likely to contain which of these? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Chloramines are increasingly replacing chlorine in our water supply. The traditional chemical in aquarium dechlorinators has been sodium thiosulfate. It neutralizes the chlorine in water, and it neutralizes the chlorine in chloramines too.

Question 10 of 10
10. The "Weberian ossicles" are a series of small bones behind the head that aid certain groups of fishes in which of these? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hybrid "Parrot" and "Flowerhorn" cichlids have raised an outcry as "frankenfish," yet some older hybrids of species are widely accepted. Of several familiar aquarium fishes, the only one definitely *not* a hybrid is?

Answer: the Green Tiger Barb.

Aquarium strains of both Platies and Swordtails are hybrids among several Mexican Xiphophorus species, and will even hybridize with one another. "Sunset" Gouramis are not selections of one species, but hybrids between two Colisa species. Green Tiger Barbs, however, are "melanistic" mutations of the species Puntius tetrazonus.

Their genes merely code for some extra black coloring, which gives them their green iridescence.
2. That white gravel you just bought will raise the alkalinity of your water. You tested it in a saucer by covering some with vinegar, and it produced bubbles of what?

Answer: carbon dioxide.

The carbonate in the gravel reacts with the acid of vinegar to produce bubbles of carbon dioxide. By a similar reaction of carbonate and (citric) acid, CO2 fizzes in your Alka-Seltzer! Carbonates would slowly dissolve out of this gravel and raise alkalinity and the pH in your aquarium, if you used it. (Hydrogen sulfide is produced quite differently, by anaerobic bacteria in pockets of very low oxygen.)

Answer: Yes

Yes. Many Corydoras species spawn at the onset of the rainy season, when temperatures quickly drop in a spate of cool rainwater runoff. The temperature drop won't harm them at all. Some breeders even wait for the barometric pressure to fall, too.
4. Dense populations of cichlid fishes and severe competition for territory in rocky areas of Lake Malawi have created evolutionary pressure in favor of which of these?

Answer: mouthbrooding.

Though mouth-brooding behavior to protect the eggs from marauders has developed in other groups of fishes, such as Bettas, a majority of the world's mouth-brooding fishes are concentrated among the cichlids of Lake Malawi.
5. Do you have fish eggs in the aquarium, or are they snail eggs? The eggs are on plant leaves. You're pretty sure they're snail eggs. Why?

Answer: they're bound together in a gelatinous mass.

Fish eggs or snail eggs may be a clear golden color, and you may detect the dark developing snail or the eyes of the larval fry within each egg, but unlike fish eggs, snail eggs are deposited in a mass that's encased in jelly.
6. Two general characteristics of species of fish that habitually school: they show minimal intraspecific aggression and little sexual dimorphism.

Answer: True

True. They display only enough aggression to preserve a minimal space between individuals, and males and females are virtually identical, until females swell with eggs at spawning season.
7. Whether you call it Nandopsis cyanoguttatum or Herichthys cyanoguttatum, the Texas Cichlid or Rio Grande Cichlid is the only cichlid native to the U.S.

Answer: true

The Texas Cichlid originally was restricted to the lower Rio Grande basin. Other cichlids found in U.S. waters, like the Florida sportsman's "Peacock Bass," are exotic escapees.
8. If your aquarium is recreating a small stream in undisturbed Amazonian rainforest, it would be *least* likely to contain which of these?

Answer: lush Amazon Swordplants.

The dim halflight under an unbroken tree canopy discourages plant growth in rainforest watercourses. Tree leaves and woody debris are more common in the dark waters that are stained with tannins and other humic acids.
9. Chloramines are increasingly replacing chlorine in our water supply. The traditional chemical in aquarium dechlorinators has been sodium thiosulfate. It neutralizes the chlorine in water, and it neutralizes the chlorine in chloramines too.

Answer: True

Yes, they are rendered into harmless chlorides. With chloramines, the sodium thiosulfate does release some free ammonia, however, and that may be a cause for concern.
10. The "Weberian ossicles" are a series of small bones behind the head that aid certain groups of fishes in which of these?

Answer: perceiving sound.

The fishes' swim bladder resonates to vibrations like the woofer of a speaker. These small bones link the swim bladder and the inner ear, enabling Carp, Characins and Catfishes and others to hear higher frequency sounds.
