Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In truth, the word "mole" has many more definitions than just that little beast that tunnels through your yard. Which of these is one of those?

Answer: All are correct

Yes, they are all correct. But this quiz will address the mammals and not their namesakes. There is a show on U.S. TV called "The Mole" that has taken many different routes, but they all involve a group of people in a contest where one knows all the answers and sabotages his fellow contestants as best as he or she can. Obviously, the word mole is not a term of affection.
2. What is the name of a real species of mole, the animal ones, in North America?

Answer: Hairy-tailed mole

There are 6 species running around, for the most part, the most prevalent being the hairy-tailed (I wasn't even sure they really had tails), the Eastern mole and the star-nosed mole.
3. Moles breed. Yuk! In an average litter of North American moles how many might you find?

Answer: 4 or 5

The average litter comes in at 2 to 6. It does vary, but that is the general expectation. They gestate in just 4 to 5 weeks and deliver, as a general rule, between mid-April through May.
4. Of the following, what is the mole's favorite lunch?

Answer: earthworms

Bring on the earthworm casserole. Moles do eat some insects, too.
5. Moles dig around a lot of course, so their front feet resemble one of these. Which one?

Answer: paddles

Paddles is right. It's like they are at sea under the yard, just paddling away...(but the paddle-like front feet work well as they dig).
6. Getting rid of moles has been an age old problem. Some remedies work and some others do not. Which of these has been suggested as an easy way to rid yourself of them over the years?

Answer: razor blades in the ground

Along with razor blades, other thoughts have been to put pickle juice down or broken glass or red pepper or bleach or moth balls or different sorts of vibrators or ultrasonic devices or castor oil. Even explosives! Yikes! The best any of that will do is send them to someone else's yard (but, once that happens, at least they are not your problem anymore).
7. Trapping works in getting rid of moles. What seasons are are the best to trap them and dispose of them?

Answer: Spring and Fall

Get the little rascals coming and going, I guess. The traps have rather scary names: the harpoon, the scissor jaw and the choker loop. It must not be easy being a mole given those options of doom.
8. One mole eats 30 pounds of worms and insects (on average) each year.

Answer: no

It is actually more than that! A 5 ounce mole will eat 45 to 50 pounds each year (given an uninterrupted lifespan).
9. Moles, as per their size compared to other similiar sized mammals, have twice as much of what compared to their peers?

Answer: blood

Having more blood helps them breathe more safely underground. Their lungs are no no bigger than any other animal their size.
10. My cats have always had great fun killing a mole and bringing it to the door. Why don't domestic cats eat moles?

Answer: They aren't tasty to cats

I won't get into why cats do that but they won't eat moles simply because they don't taste very good. This was great fun to write and I hope you had some fun.
