Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This breed originated in North Dakota, and is closely related to Sitting Bull's horses.

Answer: Nokota

They come in a variety of sizes, ranging from 14-17 hands, and are of Spanish ancestry. They were almost wiped out by ranchers, and some federal agencies. The only reason this breed survived was because a small band was fenced in on the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. While the National Park Service still tried to wipe out this herd of horses, laws protecting wild and free-roaming horses and burros stopped the slaughter.

The Nokota is a highly athletic horse, good for jumping, endurance riding, and pleasure riding. They come primarily in blue roan (white and black hairs evenly mixed together) and gray. They can also be any other color.
2. The American Curly Horse is known by what defining characteristic?

Answer: Curly coat (includes mane and tail)

The American Curly Horse is known for its curly mane, tail and coat, and for curls inside its ears. It's also known for the smooth lateral gait (which is also called a shuffling gait.) Curlies, as they are called, range from 14.3-15.2 hands, and the color can range from solid colors, to spots, to paint and pinto colorings.
3. This breed originated in Kentucky, where it was first known as the Kentucky Saddler. Which breed is it?

Answer: American Saddlebred

The American Saddlebred originated in Kentucky. It is a light riding horse, known for being either five or three gaited. The Narragansett Pacer, Morgan and Canadian Pacers all contributed to the creation of the American Saddlebred.
4. The Racking Horse was developed after the Civil War.

Answer: False

The Racking Horse was developed in the Southern US, before the Civil War. It was prized by plantation owners, who valued the smoothness of the rack. It was also known for its stamina and calm disposition.

Today, it's used for pleasure and trail riding, and competitions. It may be any solid color, and varieties of pinto colors, which is known as spotted within the breed, much like the American Saddlebred.
5. The Canadian Horse comes mostly in bay, black or brown.

Answer: True

The Canadian Horse has contributed to many horse breeds, including the Morgan and the American Standardbred. The Canadian Horse is a good riding, driving and jumping horse.
6. The Cerbat originated in California.

Answer: False

The Cerbat is from Northwestern Arizona, specifically the Cerbat mountain range. It's mainly used for ranch work, pleasure riding and endurance riding. They are a small horse, averaging about 14.2 hands. They are primarily roan, chestnut or bay.

They are a critically endangered breed. As of 2005, only 34 Cerbats were registered.
7. This spotted horse has a state in its name. Which horse is it?

Answer: Colorado Rangerbred

While the other three options are named after states, only the Colorado Rangerbred can be spotted. Not all Rangerbred horses are spotted, though. The Rangerbred can be any solid color, but not any paint or pinto colors.
8. This gaited horse is known for having several variations of gaits, including a flatfooted walk, running walk and an ambling gait. Which breed is it?

Answer: Florida Cracker

The Florida Cracker horse is a naturally gaited horse that's descended from early Spanish horses, including the Barb, the Garrano, the Jennet and some Andalusians.

The American Saddlebred and National Show horse are both either three or five gaited. Those gaits are the rack and the slow gait (along with the normal horse gaits of the walk and trot.) The Tennessee Walking Horse is known for its running walk.
9. This horse was discovered in the Kiger Mountains in Eastern Oregon.

Answer: Kiger Mustang

The Kiger Mustang is usually dun, grulla or buckskin. They are closely related to Spanish horses, and were isolated from other types of Mustangs. The stallion in "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron" was a Kiger Mustang. That brought rise to the popularity of the Kiger Mustang.
10. This draft horse is the only recognized breed of draft horse that originated in the US.

Answer: American Cream

The ACD is always a cream color, with amber or hazel eyes. They average from 15-16.3 hands. Aside from being used in driving, they are also good riding horses, due to the smoothness of their gaits.
