Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many pairs of antennae do spiders have?

Answer: none

Unlike other arthropods, such as insects, crabs, and millipedes, spiders have no antennae.
2. How many body segments does a spider have?

Answer: 2

The two segments are the cephalothorax and the abdomen. Insects have three body segments.
3. What is the proper name for the organs that include the fangs?

Answer: chelicerae

The chelicerae are two-part organs. There is a basal segment that typically contains the venom and there is the second (fang) segment.
4. What are the leg-like appendages that act as sensory organs?

Answer: pedipalps

Pedipalps resemble small legs and they serve a number of purposes. They act as sensory organs, they are used for reproduction by males, and they help draw food toward the mouth.
5. Where are lung slits located?

Answer: underside of abdomen

Lung slits are found on the underside of the abdomen. The slits open up to book lungs within the abdomen. Here, the spider's passive circulatory system picks up the oxygen.
6. How many pairs of legs do all spiders have?

Answer: 4

Spiders have eight legs. In some species, the pedipalps are large enough to resemble legs but are entirely different appendages.
7. What are the silk-manipulating structures located at the end of the abdomen called?

Answer: spinnerets

Silk is produced in silk glands located within the abdomen. This silk is "pumped" through tiny pores in the abdomen. The spinnerets then manipulate the silk, often with the help of the fourth pair of legs.
8. Where is the carapace located?

Answer: dorsal side of cephalothorax

The carapace is the part of the exoskeleton found on top of the cephalothorax. The exoskeloton is strong due to the presence of the compound chitin.
9. Do spiders have mandibles?

Answer: No

Spiders do not have mandibles like insects. Though they do use their pedipalps to "chew" food, they must liquefy all their food due to a lack of jaws.
10. Do tarantulas have good eyesight?

Answer: No

Though some spiders (jumping spiders) do have good eyesight, tarantulas do not. Tarantulas depend on their sensory hairs to give them information about their surroundings.
