Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Teddy bear hamster" is a common name for what type of hamster?

Answer: Syrian

Teddy bear/syrian hamsters are the largest domestic hamster, ranging in length from 6-7 inches (15-17 cm) in length. They can be easily identified by their particularly fluffy coats which are typically golden brown with lighter bands (an agouti coloration)
2. While teddy bear hamsters are a pet typically purchased for young children, they may not always be the best choice. Which of the following is a reason young children should NOT have a teddy bear hamster as a first pet?

Answer: They are a lot of work

A hamster takes a lot or work to maintain, as they need their cages cleaned regularly, need to be handled daily and must be fed and water changed daily.

A teddy bear hamster is clean by nature and as long as they are provided a clean environment, do not smell or carry parasites.

A teddy bear hamster tends to be an affordable pet, so is frequently purchased by people for children, not realizing how much effort is needed to have one.
3. A molded plastic cage with plenty of tubes for climbing is the best habitat for a teddy bear hamster.

Answer: False

Molded plastic cages with tubes are designed for smaller dwarf hamsters and other smaller rodents. Teddy bear hamsters, when full grown, can easily get stuck in the tubes. They are also harder to keep clean.

A 20 gallon aquarium with a mesh lid, or a wire cage with a plastic bottom is an ideal habitat.
4. When picking out a teddy bear hamster, which of the following is NOT a characteristic you should look for?

Answer: Lethargic

Even a hamster woken out of a deep sleep should perk up when handled. If a hamster remains inactive and non responsive when being handled it is most likely ill. The coat should be smooth and the eyes and nose free of discharge. If you notice any of the hamsters in the cage with diarrhea or labored breathing, avoid purchasing any hamster from that cage, as it could be a communicable disease that the other hamsters may pick up.
5. What is an example of a good fresh food supplement to add in to a teddy bear hamster's diet?

Answer: None of these

Iceberg lettuce offers no nutritional value and if given too much will cause diarrhea. Citrus fruits are known to be harmful and too acidic for hamsters to digest.

Some examples of healthy fresh foods are:
-Kale
-Celery leaves
-Broccoli
-Strawberries
6. Which is the best combination of teddy bear hamsters to keep in a cage?

Answer: One

Teddy bear hamsters are incredibly territorial. After 8 weeks in age, two teddy bear hamsters should only be put together for a brief time for breeding and then must be separated again. Teddy bear hamsters will often fight to the death.
7. If your teddy bear hamster gets dirty, a bath in lukewarm shallow water is the only way you should clean it.

Answer: False

A teddy bear hamster should always be kept dry. Their fur can actually retain 3 times their body weight in water. Not only will the hamster have trouble walking, they will take a really long time drying, which can cause illness.

Generally, teddy bear hamsters don't need bathing. They clean themselves much like a cat. If you must clean your hamster, use a warm, damp cloth and keep your hamster warm until it is dry.
8. If your teddy bear hamster gets fleas, and hamster flea medication is not available, what is a safe alternative?

Answer: Kitten flea powder

Hamster flea medication is often hard to find. A safe alternative is a kitten flea powder dusted over the hamster's bedding.
9. If given the opportunity, teddy bear hamsters will have sand baths.

Answer: True

Hamsters are very clean animals. If offered chinchilla bath sand/dust, they will happily give themselves a good sand bath.
10. Which of the following is not an acceptable form of teddy bear hamster substrate/bedding?

Answer: Pine

Pine bedding carries toxic chemicals on it, and when mixed with urine are released. Pine bedding can cause respiratory issues in hamsters.

Aspen bedding is non toxic with a low amount of dust or wood oils.

Care fresh paper pulp bedding is dust free, biodegradable, and unscented and absorbs 5 x more odor and moisture than the wood shaving beddings.

Newspaper pellets are safe and absorbent, but not particularly comfortable for hamsters.
