Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these mammals likes the shallow, icy waters surrounding the North Pole?

Answer: Pacific walrus

Walruses can dive to around 80 metres below the surface, but that isn't far compared to other aquatic mammals. They like shelf regions so that they can easily forage on the sea floor. Walruses have a thick layer of fat called blubber to insulate them in cold water.

When it is cold, the blood vessels in their blubber constrict (get smaller) so it takes less energy to keep them warm. A walrus's thick layer of fat also helps them to float in water.
2. Rock pools are created at low tide and can be harsh habitats to survive in. Which of these creatures thrives in rock pools?

Answer: European shore crab

Rock pools are filled with seawater, created when the tide goes out. Creatures like the European shore crab need to be particularly adaptable in order to live in a rock pool. They have to deal with frequent changes in water temperature and salinity. Also, ebbing and flowing waves can drag creatures out of the pool and on to the beach, or into the open ocean.
3. Where do tiny Desmoulin's whorl snails like to live?

Answer: On the banks of freshwater ponds and rivers

Desmoulin's whorl snails are minute - usually no bigger than a seed. They eat the fungi that grows along the boggy edges of rivers and ponds. They have been found in freshwater locations in the UK, Germany, Poland, and other European countries. Due to their size, a microscope is usually needed to distinguish the snails from dirt and stones.
4. Which amphibian likes the damp parts of a tropical rainforest?

Answer: Golden mantella

The golden mantella is a Madagascan frog that likes moist and swampy areas in tropical rainforests. They live near freshwater ponds, where they lay their eggs. Golden mantellas are aposematic: their bright orange skin warns predators that they are poisonous and should not be eaten.

The toxins in the frogs come from their diet of invertebrates. The number of golden mantellas has been threatened by forest fires and habitat loss.
5. Which bird enjoys living in temperate deciduous forests?

Answer: Wood warbler

Wood warblers live in Atlantic oakwoods, like those on the western coast of Wales and Scotland. They make their nests on the ground, in shrubs or under fallen branches. European wood warblers spend their summer in the UK and other places in Europe. When the breeding season is over, they migrate to Africa for the winter, where the climate is warmer.
6. The vegetation in the savannah grasslands of Central Africa is mostly made of grass and bushes. Which mammal lives in a savannah habitat?

Answer: Giant eland

Giant elands are a type of antelope that live in savannah grasslands. They like to live in herds, and have been known to live in groups of up to 60, though they normally live in smaller groups. Elands are herbivorous - they eat the grass and foliage that grows in their habitat.
7. Some animals are active during the day and some like to come out at night. What does an elf owl like to do?

Answer: It is nocturnal - it is active at night.

The elf owl is the smallest species of owl in the world, measuring just 12-15cm long. They are nocturnal hunters and normally eat insects and arthropods like beetles and moths. Elf owls like to live in deserts and wooded canyons in northern America. Unfortunately, American deserts become too cold for nocturnal insects in the winter, so the elf owl migrates south to Mexico from autumn to spring.
8. This aquatic amphibian lives in underground caves below the Dinaric Alps in Europe. What is it called?

Answer: Olm

Olms are amphibians that live, eat, and breed underwater, so their gills remain into adulthood. Olms live in complete darkness. Their eyes are undeveloped, but they have a keen sense of smell, as well as electro-sensitive organs in their snouts. They like oxygen-rich water and need a stable temperature between 8-11 degrees Celsius.
9. The Australian outback is home to a vast number of reptiles. Which one of these animals is a reptile that enjoys living in deserts and scrubland?

Answer: Thorny Devil

The thorny devil got its name from the conical spines that cover its back. The spines prevent predators from eating it, and its camouflaged skin helps the thorny devil to hide on the desert landscape. The lack of water in the desert is no problem for a thorny devil: between the conical spines, there are grooves leading to the animal's mouth.

It can drink the dew that forms on its back in the early morning.
10. Lots of animals like living high up in mountain ranges. Which of these animals would you not find living in the mountains of South America?

Answer: Orkney vole

Suri alpacas are domesticated animals that are often kept on the level heights in the Andean mountains. They graze in herds and were bred for their fiber. Andean bears are also known as spectacled bears. They live in forests and grasslands, and build platforms in trees to sleep in. Cougars live throughout North and South America, including the mountain ranges on both continents. They are normally nocturnal hunters and eat small mammals like racoons.

Orkney voles are a subspecies of the European common vole that is endemic to the Orkney Islands in the north of Scotland: they are found nowhere else in the world.
