Question 4 of 10

5. One group of animals is a vital part of the storyline, although they don't have any cute names, sing any songs, or even have a single line. The wildebeest, who were scared by hyena agitators, were the source of danger that made Mufasa leap to Simba's aid, and in doing so, to his death. As stated in the movie, what is another name for wildebeest? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Nala, Sarabi, and the other lionesses were forced by Scar to hunt the barren grounds. But do lionesses normally hunt for the pride?

Question 7 of 10

Question 8 of 10
8. Hyenas are not as stupid or lazy as they are shown in "The Lion King". They have very complex social structures. It is a widely-accepted fact that lions will more often steal from hyenas than the other way around. Which of these is an interesting fact about spotted hyenas (those shown in the movie)? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Elephant graveyards are real phenomena in which older elephants leave their herd and go to a desolate area when they are close to death.

Question 10 of 10

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lions are the kings of the jungle, but mostly they don't live in such places as the tropical rainforests they are said to inhabit. Mufasa rules not a jungle, but which type of habitat where lions are more likely to call their home?

Answer: savannah

Lions tend to live in savannahs, grassy plains, and open woodlands. It would be very unusual to find a lion in a jungle, as these beasts live and hunt on open plains, usually near watering holes.
2. The wise sage, Rafiki, is responsible for the return of Simba. He is a mandrill, characterized by his mane and brilliantly colored face. Mandrills are technically not baboons, and while they share the same family, their genus differs. What is the genus of the mandrill?

Answer: Mandrillus

Mandrills and baboons are members of the Cercopithecidae family, which includes the Old World monkeys. Although mandrills are not considered to be baboons, they are very closely related. Papio is the genus for baboons, Macaca for macaques, and Tarsius for tarsiers, all primates!
3. The ever enlightened meerkat, Timon, has an interesting philosophy on life. "Hakuna matata", of course. But the majority of meerkats don't hang out with warthogs, but with other meerkats. What are their colonies called (hint- it's the same name as is used for rabbits!)?

Answer: warrens

The meerkat is a member of the mongoose family and is no relation to actual cats (or prairie dogs for that matter). They live in large colonies called warrens, believing in the philosophy that more is safer. Typically, one meerkat will keep watch against predators while the rest of the warren works. Warrens are ferocious against other bands of meerkats. So the warrens are often warrin'... heh, no? Meeerkats DO eat lots of insects and are known for their ability to eat scorpions- they quickly bite off the poisonous section and feast.
4. And what's a meerkat without his warthog? Pumbaa may not be very attractive, and neither is his real life counterpart. "The Lion King" shows Pumbaa eating all sorts of delicious-looking insects, but what does a warthog normally eat?

Answer: grasses, roots, and berries

While it may be revolting to watch a "pig" feast on grubs, you can rest assured that that is not normally the case with warthogs. They tend to eat grasses and other plants they dig up. Occasionally they might eat a bit of carrion (a carcass or dead body), but they are not predators in the sense that they hunt for prey.

Answer: gnu

Wildebeests are also known as gnus and are native to Africa. They are in the family Bovidae, which contains antelope and cattle. They do tend to migrate in large groups such as that shown in "The Lion King" and when frightened will often trample anything around them relentlessly, many times with their young among the victims.
6. Nala, Sarabi, and the other lionesses were forced by Scar to hunt the barren grounds. But do lionesses normally hunt for the pride?

Answer: Yes

Lionesses do hunt for the pride, but the male lions often get first priority of the food. They often hunt wildebeest and zebra as they are slower than antelope. They sometimes will kill larger animals such as rhinos, hippos, or buffalo if they are hungry enough.
7. If the counterpart of Zazu, being a male hornbill, were to have a family, it would likely consist of him, a mate, and their chicks. The female would be encased within the nest with the baby birds, but where would the male hornbill be?

Answer: out finding food for the family

The female hornbill will often build a nest, except in some ground species, and enclose it to keep her and her chicks safe. The male hornbills will go find food in order to feed the chicks and their mother. When the nest grows too big for the chicks and the mother to be in, the mother will break out, repair the nest, and help the male scavenge for more food for the growing birds.
8. Hyenas are not as stupid or lazy as they are shown in "The Lion King". They have very complex social structures. It is a widely-accepted fact that lions will more often steal from hyenas than the other way around. Which of these is an interesting fact about spotted hyenas (those shown in the movie)?

Answer: female hyenas are dominant (matriarchal society)

Female hyenas are the dominant members in the hierarchy. They are larger than the males and more ferocious as well. They also decide which males to mate with, and have the best choice of food.
9. Elephant graveyards are real phenomena in which older elephants leave their herd and go to a desolate area when they are close to death.

Answer: False

Elephant graveyards are in a sense, mostly myths. The myth (according to a theory by Rupert Sheldrake) most likely comes from the fact that elephants who are close to death stay near watering holes because they cannot move elsewhere easily. Over time, you will find groupings of elephant bones near the watering holes as they perish.

The areas are not desolate, though, and are still very much used by other elephants.
10. Buzzards were looking to eat poor Simba. Luckily, bowling for buzzards is a great pastime for Timon and Pumbaa of the "The Lion King". What, pray tell, is a buzzard?

Answer: a bird

A buzzard is a general term for a certain type of bird of prey, specifically in the Buteo genus. Some other species under various genera are also sometimes referred to as buzzards.
