Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What country does the Briard originate from?

Answer: France

Another name for The Briard is 'Chien Berger de Brie'.
2. For what purpose were Briards originally used?

Answer: Herding

Although they are mainly used as a herding dog, Briards are very quick learners, and have a very good memory. They will excel at just about any activity you might want to introduce them to.
3. Briards were used during World War I to carry messages to the front line.

Answer: True

This is true, in fact, at the end of the war, there were so few Briards left due to war casualties that there was a danger the breed might disappear altogether. Thankfully, this didn't happen!
4. Briards have a long shaggy coat that grows continually, yet hardly sheds.

Answer: True

A briard's wonderful coat requires a lot of brushing, but will shed few hairs.
5. Briards' ears are often cropped in the USA.

Answer: True

Thankfully, in many countries, such as the UK and Australia, this practice is now banned. For herding dogs, the Briard's original purpose, there are valid arguments for cropping, but for pet dogs the only reason is appearance.
6. Which of these is generally considered a disqualification of the breed?

Answer: Pink nose

Briard breed standards insist upon a black nose regardless of coat colour which can be anything except white.
Natural ears used to be considered a fault, and may still be in some places, but as ear cropping is now illegal in some countries, natural ears are now generally accepted.
7. The Briard is often described as 'A strong and gentle heart wrapped in fur'.

Answer: True

And if you have ever met one, you will know it is a perfect description!
8. How many dewclaws does the Briard have on each hind leg?

Answer: 2

Although double dew claws are unusual, they are certainly not unique to the Briard. Among others, they are also found on, Beauceron, Great Pyrenees, Pyrenees Shepherd, Norwegian Lundehund, Norwegian Buhund and the Iceland dog.
9. Briards thrive best if fed on one large meal a day.

Answer: False

Like many large deep-chested dogs, Briards can suffer from 'bloat' (or gastric torsion). This is a potentially fatal disease in which the stomach fills with gas and can flip over, strangling the blood supply to the lungs, heart, and digestive system.
10. Briards herd by snapping and barking at the heels of the flock.

Answer: False

The Briard doesn't bark and snap the way some other herding dogs do, but instead uses the weight of its body and its large head to keep recalcitrant sheep (or children!) in line.
