Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the guard dog training that originated in Germany?

Answer: Schutzhund

Schutzhund isn't just for GSD's. Many other breeds, including the Rottweiler and Doberman take part in it. Schutzhund teaches search and rescue, along with protection training. There are three levels to it, with each level getting progressively harder.

The other names I just made up, but they do mean something. Here are the translations: Schutzhund means guard or protection dog, Polizeihund means police dog, Suche und Rettung means search and rescue and ausgebildethund means trained dog.
2. Which color is disqualified from being shown in the AKC breed (conformation) ring?

Answer: White

The white shepherd is the only color that is disqualified, although it is a serious fault to show a washed out or gray (silver) dog. There is a different breed (not AKC recognized) called the "White German Shepherd" that is specifically the white GSD.
3. What was the GSD originally bred to do?

Answer: Herd

Although it is a good guard dog, the GSD is primarily bred for herding. It has a strong herding instinct.
4. Which is supposed to be bigger, the male or female?

Answer: Male

The female GSD has an allowed height of 22-24 inches. Anything above or below is considered a fault. The male is supposed to be from 24-26 inches. The height difference is partly what makes the male GSD more wanted as a police dog, that and the male is (generally) more territorial.
5. According to most GSD breeders, how many coat types are there?

Answer: 3

The three coat types are: normal stock, long stock and long haired. Both the long stock and the long haired stock are undesireable because the longer hair detracts from the weatherproofing.
6. Which of these has the GSD been trained for?

Answer: All of them

The GSD is a versatile breed, as it is also a companion, a hearing dog and many, many more.
7. What is the name of the founder of Verein fur Deutsche Schaferhunde, which was the first club for the GSD?

Answer: Captain Max von Stephanitz

The club was founded in 1899 on April 22. Aside from founding the first GSD club, he also helped to create what we now know as the German Shepherd dog. He knew what he wanted in conformation, and he and several other people bred for it.
8. Which of these breeds has a GSD had a part in creating?

Answer: Shiloh Shepherd

The Shiloh shepherd is a relatively new breed, which is a combination of the Alaskan malamute, the GSD and several other breeds. It resembles a long coated GSD, only much larger.
9. How many teeth should a GSD have?

Answer: 42

There should be 20 on the top and 22 in the lower jaw.
10. Which of these was the GSD the first breed to do?

Answer: Seeing Eye Dog

The first seeing eye dog was a bitch named Kiss in 1928, whose name was later changed to Buddy.
