Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On which of these continents will you NOT find otters?

Answer: Australia

Otters can be found in North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia, but not Australia (or Antarctica!). The names of many of the species give clues as to their origin or habitat, such as the European otter, the Japanese otter, the North American river otter, African clawless otter and the Oriental small-clawed otter.
2. What is an adult male otter called?

Answer: A dog

A female is a bitch and babies are whelps, pups or kits. The otters can also be called a boar (male) and sow (female).
3. Lengthwise, what is the largest species of otters called?

Answer: Giant Otter

The giant otter (Pteronura brasiliensis) can reach lengths of up to 7.8 feet and weigh between 50 to 100 pounds. Sometimes known to locals as the "river wolf", the giant otter is one of South America's top species and has no serious natural predators other than humans.
4. Which of these is NOT a reason for a decline in the otter population?

Answer: Capture for zoos

Over-hunting can also impact the population and in recent years roadkill deaths have risen significantly. Most otter species have had successful conservation efforts on their behalf, but while many are no longer under current threat of extinction, they remain endangered.
5. Otters are part of the family Mustelidae. Which of these is NOT also a member of that family?

Answer: House Cat

The domestic cat (Felis catus) is a member of the Felidae family, along with all other cats, including lions and tigers.

The Mustelidae also includes wolverines. The members of this family vary greatly in size - from the least weasel (Mustela nivalis), which is slightly larger than a mouse, to the giant otter, which from nose to tail can be as long as a basketball player is tall!
6. What is an otter's den called?

Answer: Couch

Although the couch COULD be in a den... LOL! The North American river otter's den is also called a holt and is often built in the burrows made by other animals like woodchucks or foxes.
7. Where is the giant otter's range?

Answer: South America

Look for them next time you are in the Amazon river basin. Giant otters are seen by the indigenous Achuar tribe as a type of water spirit called tsunki.
8. In southern Bangladesh, otters have been domesticated and trained to do what?

Answer: Chase fish into nets

This traditional practice can still be found in the Narail district of Bangladesh, where the smooth-coated species of otters are found. The domesticated otters are born and bred in captivity. Approximately 300 fishermen are estimated to use these trained otters today.
9. How deep can sea otters dive when foraging for food?

Answer: 330 feet

Most sea otters live in water 50 to 75 feet deep along coasts and dive to the sea floor to forage for food. Most dives last around one minute, although the sea otter can hold its breath up to 5 minutes. Don't try that at home!
10. Otters are insulated with dense, heavy fur as opposed to THIS fat which other sea mammals all have:

Answer: Blubber

It is VERY important to keep those fur coats in good condition. Their grooming ensures that their coats are clean, not tangled, and has air inside the space between the hairs to act as waterproofing.
