Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to legend, how did the milk snake get its name?

Answer: They are commonly found in barns and were thought to drink the milk of cows

Milk snakes are native to the farm areas of the United States, and were found in barns with cows in them. Farmers would think they were drinking the cow's milk, when in fact they were dining in on some rats.

Milk snakes also have a very nice pattern to them, take a look at one sometime.
2. What species of lizard is noted for being able to run on water when escaping a predator, and is nicknamed "the Jesus Christ lizard"?

Answer: Basilisk lizard

This lizard is native to Central America, and is loved by all because it can run on water. In mythology and various children's books like Harry Potter, the basilisk can turn people into stone with its gaze, along with being 10 feet and longer.
3. This reptile is a smaller relative of the alligator that lives in Central and South America.

Answer: Caiman

I suppose now you are scratching your brow, wondering what this host's obsession is with the caiman? Well, I had one as a pet when I was about 8. Me and my Dad got it for 1 dollar. He went from a cute little guy to 5 ft long. About 8 years later he had a stroke and died. He enjoyed a diet of pork, frozen mice, shrimp, and minnows. He also had some gold fish live with him for a few months.

The caiman in the wild eats soft shelled turtles, rats, lizards, fish, and stuff along that line. They are also hunted for food by the locals, and are supposed to be very tasty.

The tegu is a pretty big lizard, sort of like a monitor lizard.

The gharial is the Indian version of the crocodile. If you have never seen one be amazed, and type it into a search engine right now and be blown away!
4. What is the longest species of lizard in the world?

Answer: Crocodile Monitor

I'm sure everyone who selected Komodo dragon is about to send me a vicious note about how I'm wrong. Well I am not. The Komodo dragon is the leader in mass, or weight, but the crocodile monitor, or Papuan monitor can reach the length of 12-14 feet.

They are native to Papua New Guinea, and their skin is used to make drums for the locals. They enjoy eating eggs and rat, so if you have one in captivity, I suggest you make sure you have a Denny's near by.
5. What country is the marine iguana native to?

Answer: Ecuador

They are native to the Galapagos Islands, but that is not a country now is it.

The marine iguana is a great example of evolution, with its ability to go under water for long periods of time to hunt for seaweed.
6. Everyone who knows anything about reptiles can tell you that tuataras are the last species surviving from the order Rhynchocephalia, making them distinct from lizards, snakes, crocodiles and turtles. But what makes the tuatara distinct?

Answer: Their teeth are not separate structures from their skulls

All four are true about them, but the three wrong answers all occur in other reptiles.

They also have a diapsid skull, unlike other lizards, but exist in crocidilians. It is a skill that has two openings on the top of the skull, and two at the side of the skull. The tuatara lives in New Zealand, lives in colonies with birds, takes 20 years to mature, and lay eggs similar to those of turtles.
7. This turtle is known for laying on the floor of lakes, and attracting fish to eat with its worm-shaped tongue.

Answer: Alligator snapping turtle

The alligator snapping turtle is native to the southeast United States. It can grow supposedly up to 30 inches in length, weigh 175 lbs, and is the largest freshwater turtle in the world.
8. What kind of environment do the two largest snakes in the world live in?

Answer: Near water

Both the reticulated python and anaconda live near the water, which is interesting because most other species of large snakes, like the rock python, Burmese python, and tree boas live in the jungle. Even stranger is that most other water snakes are smaller than their counterparts, such as the cottonmouth and elephant snake.
9. Where are the only two places in the world that alligators are found?

Answer: South East USA and China

The alligator is common to the South East USA where it inhabits many swamps, and is now grown on farms for a tasty treat to those with exotic tastes. The ones in China live in the lower Yangtze River Basin, and are much smaller than the 6 meter lengths seen in the American alligator.
10. The Gila monster is noted for being venomous. Which of the following lizards is also venomous?

Answer: Mexican beaded lizard

Both the blue tongued and five lined skink are both rumored to secrete poison, but it has never been proven. The Mexican beaded lizard is docile, lazy, and lives in Mexico. Like the Gila monster it is rare for it to bite anyone, and if it does, you're more likely to get hurt by it not letting go of your flesh, rather than the poison.
