Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which year was the Chinese crested given full AKC recognition?

Answer: 1991

While the breed has existed for much longer, the American Kennel Club accepted the crested for full recognition in 1991.
2. Which organization was the first in the USA to register cresteds and record their pedigrees?

Answer: American Hairless Dog Club

The American Hairless Dog Club registered dogs on phenotype (appearance). If it had very little hair anywhere on its body, it was registered as a Xoloitzcuintli (Mexican hairless). If it had more hair on its head, feet and tail, it was registered as a Chinese crested. If you look at early pedigrees, you'll find some of the same individuals in both Xolo and crested pedigrees.
3. What are the varieties of cresteds called?

Answer: Hairless and powderpuff

The AKC breed standard says that the hairless and powderpuff should be the same physically, with the exceptions of coat on the puff and dentition in the hairless.
4. If you breed two hairless cresteds together, what combination of puppies is possible?

Answer: All of these are possible

One of the most exciting things about whelping a litter of Chinese cresteds is that you not only find out if the pups are male or female but if they're hairless or powderpuff and what color they are. It's like Christmas!
5. If you breed two powderpuffs together, what combination of puppies is possible?

Answer: All powderpuffs

Hairless Chinese cresteds carry a dominant gene for hairlessness and a recessive gene for full coat (powderpuff). Puffs carry only the recessive gene for full coat, so all pups from a puff to puff breeding will be puffs.
6. According to the AKC standard, what is the preferred color for the Chinese crested?

Answer: Any color or combination

While black and white cresteds are very popular today, the standard permits any color or combination of colors. There are SO many beautiful colors in the breed!
From blue to palomino, with spots or without, they're all lovely and they're all acceptable.
7. What should the temperament of the crested be, according to the AKC standard?

Answer: Lively and gay

While crested owners will tell you that their dogs are intelligent, goofy, entertaining, stubborn and many other things, the breed standard calls for lively and gay. Shyness is not typical of the crested and should not be rewarded in the show ring.
8. In which of these venues can a Chinese crested NOT earn AKC titles?

Answer: Earthdog

Cresteds can do well in many events, but titles at Earthdog trials are only for breeds that were bred to hunt vermin, like terriers and dachshunds. Some clubs allow dogs that are not eligible for AKC titles to participate in training or fun runs, and I've seen cresteds enjoy everything from lure coursing to herding.
9. In which AKC group is the Chinese crested exhibited?

Answer: Toy

Though there are many people who think the crested should be in the Non-sporting group, the AKC standard clearly states that the crested is a toy breed. The Miscellaneous classes are for breeds that are working toward full AKC recognition but don't have it yet. The crested is fully AKC recognized.
10. Which health issue is NOT common in cresteds?

Answer: Rage syndrome

Thanks to dedicated researchers and responsible crested owners, there are now DNA tests for PRCD-PRA and PLL. A crested might sulk for a while if it doesn't get its own way, but it doesn't rage.
