Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What breed of horse is born brown, turns lighter with age, and lives wild in the marshes of France?

Answer: Camargue

The Camargue is one of the toughest horses around. The habitat they live in has scarce grass, tons of mud, and many dangers around. The hardy horse is favored by French "cowboys" because the breed is surefooted and cunning.
2. Who was the first horse to win the Triple Crown?

Answer: Sir Barton

Big Ben was an Olympic champion, not a racer. Cigar, although he was a racehorse, was not the first to win the Triple Crown. The Godolphin Arabian wasn't even alive at the time of the first Triple Crown races. He lived before that time, and sired many successful racers.
3. How is an American White different from other horses?

Answer: It has pink skin

An American White is a horse with pink skin, which causes the coat to appear white. The horses may also have rims of pink around their eyes and muzzle, and they may have glass, or pale blue, eyes.
4. What happened to the young racehorse, Barbaro, in the Preakness Stakes of 2006?

Answer: Barbaro broke his right hind leg

Sadly, the young superstar horse was unable to finish the big race. He wasn't euthanized at first. He was put down in January of 2007.
5. What is a swirled circle of hairs in the middle of a horse's forehead called?

Answer: whorl

A whorl is a circle of hairs that are swirled around. Not every horse has a whorl.
6. What breed of horse has a straight profile, curved crest, and long, sloping pasterns?

Answer: Morgan

The Morgan horse is flashy and handsome. They can be seen in saddleseat classes at shows. Long, sloping pasterns cause the horse to have a flashy, high-stepping gait.
7. What is the third gait called in non-gaited horses?

Answer: canter

The canter is the third gait in non-gaited horses, like Walkers. It is a three-beat gait, and in most horses, it feels like a rocking horse moving around.
8. What is the proper jumping form?

Answer: raised out of the saddle, the reins pushed forward slightly

If you sit in the saddle while the horse is jumping, they could stumble or not take off as well, either hurting themselves, or causing you to knock down a pole or two. Jerking back on the reins will hurt the horse's mouth, not allow them to extend their neck to clear the fence, and make the horse confused.
9. What breed originated in America?

Answer: Saddlebred

The Saddlebred can most often seen in the show ring! With long, sloping pasterns, their gait is flashy and spirited. Most often, you can spot the Saddlebred in saddleseat classes.
10. What is the style of English riding called where the saddle is flat and two sets of reins are used?

Answer: saddleseat

Saddleseat is not for everyone! The riders must sit taller than they would for western riding or English huntseat, and they have to raise their hands and head higher. The horses must lift their knees higher and their heads must be fashionably raised.
