Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following animals lives in a home called a formicary?

Answer: Ant

A formicary is the proper term for an ant hill. It consists of an intricate maze of underground tunnels and chambers. Worker ants are responsible for bringing the bits of dirt that surround the entrance and become the ant hill above ground. A formicary can be continually occupied by the same colony of ants for over 20 years.
2. What is the common name for a beaver's home?

Answer: Lodge

The semi-aquatic beaver is a very industrious animal which make its lodge from branches and mud. In cold weather this mud hardens and becomes so hard that predators such as wolves and wolverines find a beaver's lodge to be impenetrable. Every lodge has multiple entrances, can become very large in size, having multiple areas of residence inside.
3. What animal would you find living in an aviary?

Answer: Sparrow

An aviary is a large outdoor enclosure which houses many varieties of birds. They are usually large enough to include small plants in an attempt to make a more natural environment. They are made large enough that the birds are able to fly around, as opposed to a cage. Many large zoos have elaborate aviaries which are home to hundreds of birds.
4. You would expect to see a llama living in a home called a ranarium.

Answer: False

A ranarium is a man-made home for frogs. They are used for the breeding of frogs for a variety of reasons. Some ranariums raise frogs for food while others can be found in zoos and are used to help in conservation efforts with endangered species. Most of these large enclosed homes are patterned to mimic the natural habitat of the species living in them.
5. Which of the following animals live in a home called a roost?

Answer: Bat

Bat roosts can be found in caves, under bridges, and just about anywhere that provides darkness, protection, and a large area for the bats to raise their young. Ecological changes have necessitated the making of artificial roosts for bats in some parts of the world. These usually are built on high stilts and bear a resemblance to a very large bird house.
6. Which of the following animals would make its home in a structure called an eyrie?

Answer: Hawk

An eyrie or aerie is the nest of a bird of prey. Hawks, falcons, and eagles all live in large nests known by this name. An eyrie is a type of large platform nest that are used and meticulously maintained for many years by a breeding pair. They can become so large that they actually break or cause damage to the large branches on which they are built.
7. Which of the following animals would you find living in a home called a columbarium?

Answer: Dove

A columbarium is another name for a dovecote. It is a man-made structure designed to house pigeons and doves. The are usually found built onto the end of a house or barn and contain many small holes for the birds to build their nests. In many areas these birds were kept for their eggs, their dung, and for their meat.

These structures were usually made of stone and could be very elaborate buildings that were a sign of status and power.
8. Which of the following animals would be found in a rookery?

Answer: Sea lion

A rookery is the term for a colony of breeding animals. The term is used for the outdoor homes of some birds, sea lions, turtle, and seals. The rookeries of sea lions and seals are not structures but rather a large beach area inhabited by a large colony of breeding females, their babies, and a few lucky males.

They are so crowded and claustrophobic that the term has been used as a name for the densely packed slum housing that was found in many large 19th century cities.
9. Which of the following animals would you expect to see living in a warren?

Answer: Rabbit

Rabbits live in warrens. The man-made versions are designed with a substantial moat, as rabbits do not swim well and will usually make extended efforts to avoid being in the water. The large man-made mounds of tunneled dirt mimicked the natural warrens in which rabbits lived in the wild. Like many other underground homes, warrens have multiple entrances, multiple rooms, and an extensive maze of tunnels.

The man-made warrens were used to breed rabbits for food and fur.
10. A drey is home to which of the following animals?

Answer: Squirrel

Some squirrels build a nest in the forks of trees that are called dreys. They are made of dry twigs and leaves and can easily be mistaken for a bird's nest. These are usually found in the upper branches of trees to provide better protection. The squirrel family is large and varied, and make their homes in a huge variety of places including the homes of humans.
